The awareness that is Nighthawk still has more lessons to learn. One lesson will occur while he is in the body of Raoul Forier, a French resistance fighter who has escaped from Buchenwald, the German concentration camp. As he makes his way to Switzerland, Nighthawk hopes he can live long enough to assure Raoul’s escape. Just when safety seems like a possibility, Nighthawk/Raoul is captured by Kilian Rheinhold, a young man living in his deceased grandparent’s cabin, a young man with a deadly secret of his own. Recognition between Raoul and Kilian is instantaneous, strong, and silent. They had been lovers in a past life but left issues unresolved. Nighthawk does not know how he can, of if he can, help the men recover from the past.

This unusual story grabs the attention early and holds it prisoner until the last word. Roxana Blaze has captured the tenor and tension of the time, if not the language. She paints her scenery with images and her characters with raw emotions suited to the situation. This is an author to seek out and enjoy.

“Heartless” is a heart rending story and well worth the time to read.
