The annual East Coast Paranormal Investigators Conference is being held in Boston this year, and the Rayne family is there in force. Matthew Rayne and his brothers Adam and Jason will be giving a tech conference at the event, and the whole family hopes to find a new psychic to replace pregnant family member Gina. The number one draft pick for Rayne’s Paranormal Investigations is Kim Vernon, but no one can ever get near her to discuss business without Kim’s bitchy business partner, Tonya, interfering.
Tonya’s doing more than keeping Kim from exploring employment opportunities, she’s also cock-blocking, which is beginning to frustrate Matthew who has long been attracted to Kim’s lush curves. He’s got a thing for full-figured women and, although he does not share his sister and brothers’ psychic abilities, he thinks there might be mutual attraction there.
As it turns out, Matt is right, and to his delight, it’s the zaftig psychic who makes the first move. What happens next is playful, erotic and very entertaining.
There’s a lot to like here, beginning with the dynamics of the Rayne family. They are a thoroughly contemporary bunch with gay brother Adam’s husband Parker changing his name to Rayne in order to fit in. Sister Dana runs the business side of the business and has no problem giving her brother’s love life a little push when she can. (Even though she usually gives Matt his privacy, there are times when she just can’t help herself.)
Kim is something we don’t see all that often. When Dragon describes her as “full-figured,” she’s not talking about someone who can barely stuff herself into a size 10, she’s talking about a big, beautiful, bountiful woman who wears a 22. “Lush flesh does things” to Matt, and we like him all the better for it. We like Kim, too, because underneath her insecurities and repressed pain is a woman with the courage to grab love when it’s offered rather than sink into the security blanket of a relationship that has coddled her in a poisonous embrace.
Less is more in this short and sexy tale—it’s an Ellora’s Cave Quickie—and the writer leaves us wanting to see a whole lot more of these characters.
