Black Swan by Linda Nightingale
Tristan is Black Irish - black-haired, blue-eyed - and an accomplished artist and musician. In other words, he is all together yummy. He is also a Vampire who yearns for life as a mortal but is afraid of love. He met and fell in love with new divorcee Carol Ferguson at a Black Swan social gathering. (Black Swans are an elite circle of mortals, willing to trade blood for pleasure and prestige.) But after a year together, his old hungers loom, his fears overwhelm him, and he runs from England to America to try and start fresh. He comes to discover what he has lost.
“Black Swan” is a well-done tale of the struggle for love, both for self and for another. The author has done a fine job of creating a unique vampire society and really interesting characters. There is some adult content.

I fell in love with this story while Linda was still working on it and I LOVED it. Linda’s writing is lush and characters are “to die for”. (Snicker)
I wanted to give it 6 stars!

I was really surprised to see such a great tale get a 3 1/2, even your words suggest a better review rating. I never thought I’d enjoy a short book like this, in this genre, but I dreamed about it that night. I read it in one sitting, because I couldn’t put it down. I always wanted a black Irish Man, both in heritage and in story. I just never thought I’d want him to bite my neck. And I had no problem with it in my dreams.
So she musta done something right!

I consider 3-1/2 tombstones to represent an above average rating, but in truth, the book did not grab me by the throat and not let go and that’s what it takes to get the highest rating. I thought the author did a terrific job of creating a unique culture and cast of characters (and that is a tough task). But I was not particularly fond of the two main characters. They both seemed rather shallow to me and there was a bit too much angst. I recognize that it was a short story and that doesn’t allow much room for character development, but I’ve been privileged to read many works of the same length where the author pulled it off wonderfully. I read and review 10 - 20 books a month, and I do take it very seriously. Although it’s vital to have a good story to tell, it is just as vital that it be told well. In the end, though, it comes down to personal taste, and the review is the opinion of only one person. I’m really glad that you posted your comments because it gives those reading the review a second opinion and that is extremely important.
