Tall, Dark & Fangsome by Michelle Rowen

The final book in the Immortality Bites series, Tall, Dark & Fangsome is a bittersweet parting with the characters readers have come to love. Everything really gels in this book - the interactions between all of the different personalities are fantastic, the plot is one of the strongest I have read in urban fantasy for awhile, and whole series is resolved in what I would say is the best novel. Michelle Rowen just keeps getting better as her writing develops.

Still afflicted with the nightwalker curse from Stakes & Stilettos, Sarah Dearly may as well have an inner demon. Her sun sensitivity enhanced to lethal levels is coupled with an irresistible urge to drain blood, and Sarah is at serious risk for becoming the Hollywood version of the monster. Her only hopes for a cure lie in the hands of a teenaged wizard or Gideon Chase, a bad-boy vampire hunter with an unexpected softer side. Being blackmailed by the latter doesn’t help the situation, either, and Sarah must hide her relationship with Thierry, the master vampire she loves. Gideon’s price is a high one: Sarah must sire him to protect those that she loves, but giving the hunter powerful vampire abilities is an incredibly high cost…

I honestly can’t believe this series is over. It’s a fitting ending, yes, and the ending that the characters deserved, but I still felt like crying when it was all over and I realized that there wouldn’t be any more of the characters that I had come to love. So many paranormal series focus on a number of related characters rather than just on a central few, as Immortality Bites does, but I think the continuing adventures of the same characters bring a depth and a quality of interaction to the cast that is otherwise impossible. With any luck, we will get a few cameos out of these guys in Ms. Rowen’s future novels - I can’t bear the thought of never seeing the characters again!

While this book could theoretically stand alone, I hope that readers would instead choose to pick up the previous books before jumping into this one; so much would be lost just reading the last novel. Great writing, great story, great characters. Five out of five isn’t a high enough rating for this book or series.
