The origin of the revenants lies in the betrayal of a power-hungry twin. In his guilt for slaughtering his brother, the surviving twin takes his own life and asks to be buried by his kin. Both men wake with no recollection of who the other is. One believes this new life is a gift, a second chance; the other believes it to be a punishment to be escaped.
Two factions of revenants emerge from the brothers. The first faction is represented in Book One, first through the eyes of the Pleroma, the leader of the Lucien Sols, then Janna, one of his most trusted revenants. Book Two follows Ezra, a recently raised revenant who has a hard time dealing with the barrage of past lives his reincarnated soul has lived, as he and his companions try to save another young revenant.
Ryan Sherwood strives in his description, detailing the battles between the different factions to a degree so intense that you feel the anger, the pain, the suffering of the characters. Surprises wait at every turn, some sprouting wings, waiting to attack from the sky. Even as I huddled in my chair, biting my nails in anticipation for the next shoe to drop, I found myself lulled into a false sense of security by the author’s sense of humor.
Ezra’s internal musings were hilarious, especially when he and his friends journey to save a captured revenant. In the midst of a very tense scene, he thinks to himself, “You are a walking dead body that can see the past lives of his soul. Normal is long gone.”
Revenants: Fallen Savior was a welcome surprise, both as a reader and reviewer, earning it 3.5 tombstones. There were a few issues with editing and the use of the word “bub” was distracting because it didn’t match the tone of the rest of the novel, but the story was compelling enough to overshadow those pitfalls. The author’s innovative world of reincarnation and redemption left me breathless and begging for more. I’d love to see me about this world!
