Guest Blogger Kendra Leigh Castle
Bitten by Books is excited to welcome author Kendra Leigh Castle today as our featured Guest Blogger! She will be talking with you today about keeping the fantasy fresh: putting a new twist on legendary creatures of the night. Check out the contest at the end of this post! You could win the two-book set of Call of the Highland Moon and its sequel, Dark Highland Fire.
****************************************************
Pale, handsome men with exotic accents who wear capes and drink the blood of beautiful women. Wretched souls turned into violent beasts by the light of every full moon. Cackling old crones who curse the innocent over their bubbling cauldrons. Recognize these creatures of the night? Sure, we all do. But do we really want to read about them, with no variations at all, over and over again? Does every vampire hero have to live in black tie and sound Romanian? Can’t a witch be young and sexy? And what about werewolves…what if they actually like being a shapeshifter, and retain their nice-guy-ness even in wolf form?
The general answer to all of this is what got me, and keeps me, writing paranormal romance: legendary creatures of the night, provided you keep one or two defining characteristics, can be whatever you want them to be. And even better, readers (I’m still one of these as well!) love having new twists on old favorites stalking through their stories. I love reading characters that aren’t quite what I expect, like MaryJanice Davidson’s funny, shoe-loving vampire queen, or Gena Showalter’s otherworldly warrior trapped on Earth as what we would consider a genie. Traditional ideas can be a wonderful jumping-off point to create new incarnations of vampires and werewolves and witches, oh my. And often, the basics can be blended with imagination to create something entirely new…which I’ve begun to think is the most fun of all.
In my debut novel Call of the Highland Moon, I was mainly concerned with werewolves. My hero and his entire family are hereditary werewolves. But wretched, tortured, violent souls? Um, not so much. That archetype was never going to work for me, so I kept the wolf shifter part of the mythology, along with the power of the full moon, and built my own werewolves from there (kind of like the Six Million Dollar Man, but free). My Wolves are big, sexy Highlanders comfortable in either skin. When they’re not busy guarding an ancient religious relic in a remote part of the Western Highlands, they enjoy shifting at will and roaming their land. They would laugh at silver bullets; the only thing that can really hurt them is another werewolf, as those wounds heal far more slowly and can be fatal because of it. Oh, and despite their generally noble natures, they are compelled to bite their mates to claim them. The problem? Werewolf bites, in my mythology, are often deadly to humans, whose fragile bodies have a hard time weathering the Change. The payoff, however, can be huge if you should survive: it’s the only true way to bond with my werewolves. And they mate for life.
Gideon and Gabriel MacInnes are definitely my kind of werewolves. But when I began writing my upcoming October release, Dark Highland Fire, I knew I wanted a heroine who was neither human nor werewolf…I wanted to create an entity that was something completely new, something that blended bits of some of my favorite creatures with bits of random stuff I had in my head (there’s a lot of that kind of debris in there, sadly, but it is occasionally useful!). Very shortly, I had Rowan an Morgaine, who is probably my favorite character I’ve written so far.
Rowan an Morgaine is a Drakkyn. What’s a Drakkyn? Well, it depends on which tribe of the god-and-goddess-descended otherworlders you’re asking about. Rowan is one of the Dyadd Morgaine, sorceresses descended from the Goddess Morgaine who drink the blood of willing supplicants to retain their formidable powers. Sound kinda vamp-esque? Well, sort of. But there’s more. The Dyadd are matriarchal and only give birth to females, neither marrying nor ever acknowledging the many fathers of their children. Revered as demi-goddesses, the Dyadd are fiercely independent, legendarily beautiful, and incredibly powerful. They roam the vast forests of their realm like gypsies in a sumptuous traveling celebration. Rowan herself has been chosen by her mother as the future Dyana, and has magical gifts as fiery as her looks and temperament. However, her singular appeal leads to unwanted attention from a different sort of Drakkyn altogether, and Rowan ends up fleeing for her life until she is dumped, literally, into the reluctant arms of one very surprised werewolf. Rowan was so much fun to create: part vampire, part sorceress, part goddess. And pairing her up with a more traditional werewolf set off sparks so intense they surprised even me!
But that’s the beauty of paranormal romance: the sky’s the limit, really. And when you pick up a book that professes to contain vampires or werewolves, they’re like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates in the best way…you never know what you’re gonna get! I hope everyone gives my own twist on creatures of the night a chance and picks up Dark Highland Fire when it arrives in bookstores in October. And if you do, I hope Rowan and Gabriel are as much fun to read as they were to write! Which brings me to my treat for today…leave me a comment, and you’ll have a chance to win a set of both my books, Call of the Highland Moon and Dark Highland Fire. I’ll be in to chat and answer questions all day, so please say hello! Thanks so much to Rachel and everyone at Bitten by Books for having me here today, and happy reading, everyone!

Hello Kendra! How are you this morning? I am so glad to get to blog with you, Recently (this month) I read Call of the Highland Moon and I have to say I fell in love with the story! I can not wait until the release of the 2nd. I must say every stray pup now I see, I secretly want to take home!

Hey Kendra! So glad to see you here at bitten by books. I love your stuff! I can’t wait to read the next one! I found you by the most wide reaching way. I have a friend in the UK who I share stories with back and forth. After I was able to get the autograph of one of her fave authors for her, she sent me a box back from the UK with some goodies, and one book. Yours!
She told me I might like it. She was wrong. I didn’t like it, I loved it!
Thanks for dropping by!

Teresa I guess we are a bit early!

Hi Caden! Love your name:-) I’m so glad you fell in love with Call of the Highland Moon! LOL about the stray dogs…I’ve always had that problem, so I thought it would be fun to work it into a story. How come things like that never happen in real life?? *cries*
Hi Teresa! That IS an interesting way to get your hands on a book. I actually feel cool that I was part of an international box:-) My grandma is from the UK…I’ll have to tell her that, she’ll love it. I’m so glad you loved the book!
I really hope you both enjoy Dark Highland Fire. This is the heroine that I totally want to be when I grow up. If I ever grow up. Which I may not, on general principle!
Thanks for dropping in!

Thanks for being here today Kendra! I am wondering what is next for this series? And are you working on any other paranormal type books?

Well it seems you share my passion for anything Irish and Scottish.

Hi Kendra
I went to your website and read the excerpt for Call of the Highland Moon. Great introduction to your writing!
I’m always curious about a writer’s environment. Do you listen to music? If so what kind? Or do you prefer silence?
[Reply]
Ooh, questions! *rubs hands*
Hi Rachel, and thanks again for having me here today:-) The next book in the series is called Wild Highland Magic, and is the story of Bastian, who is the heroine’s brother in Dark Highland Fire. I actually just sent in my pile o’edited manuscript today, and am pretty sure my eyes are going to fall out of my head. WHM is again set in the Highlands, but all of the characters from the first two books pop in, and there’s a strong secondary role for a villain I have a very big soft spot for. I love redeemable villains!!
As far as writing other paranormals, absolutely. I’ve got a prologue written for a new series I’m going to try…no werewolves, but lots of dark, funny anti-heroes. I will definitely keep you posted!
[Reply]
Caden, I definitely have a passion for all things Scots and Irish. And British. And Aussie. Okay, yeah, I’m talking about men:-) I have an, um, accent fixation.
Also, I’m pretty much an anglophile in general. When I’m escaping, I love to read Regencies. And Jane Austen movies are my comfort food!
[Reply]
Sorry, Caden, forgot to answer the second part…yes, Dark Highland Fire definitely gets a little more involved with my otherworld, Coracin. The heroine is from there and the villain is from there, so I did get to play mroe with worldbuilding, and i enjoyed it a LOT.
[Reply]
Hi Kendra,
Do you have a specified time that you write?
I have not read your book, but am putting it on my ToBuy list.
[Reply]
Hi Patricia! I’m glad you liked the excerpt!
Yes, I’m always interested in writers’ environments too. I wish mine was a little less chaotic right now, but we’re building a new house, living in a small rental, and I am minus an office. I write a lot at night, due to three young kids, and I drag the laptop wherever I can get comfortable.
I can block out background chatter like nobody’s business if I have to, but I’m not very good at writing with the music on. I think it’s because I am very much a music junkie, and I get distracted by the song instead of letting it fade out. Ideally, I like quiet. But I listen to music for inspiration all the time!
[Reply]
Hi Estella!
I write mainly at night, though I wish I could do more during the day, since I like sleep and never get enough. It’s just hard with a three-year-old wreaking havoc (and oh, he is a busy one). When pre-school comes for the little guy, I may carve out more daylight writing time. I hope!
[Reply]
Hey Kendra, I haven’t read either of your books yet, but they do sound good
I especially like the idea of a werewolf laughing at a silver bullet since that is a prevalent weakness in werewolf tales
I was wondering as a paranormal reader, what the first paranormal story you ever read was? was it mainstream or obscure? classic or contemporary? fiction or non-fiction?
and as a paranormal writer, did it merely get you interested in the genre as a reader or did it inspire you to write about the creatures of the night? Thanks for putting up with our questions, I greatly enjoyed learning of your books
[Reply]
Hi Sarai!
I like the questions, no worries:-) And I’m glad you like the sound of my books! In my werewolf mythology, silver bullets are just one of those silly stories. They have plenty of other things to worry about, though!
Let’s see, first paranormal stories…that’s a tough one, because I was definitely digging in my mom’s romances by sixth grade, and I don’t quite remember what came first. I loved time travel romances, which were big then (late 80s). I have a very vivid memory of reading A Knight in Shining Armor by Judith McNaught. And I went totally nuts for Johanna Lindsey’s Warrior’s Woman trilogy, especially the first two. That series just opened my eyes about the awesome things you could do with a romance, and they are still some of my favorites! Technically those are sci-fi romance, I guess, but that didn’t even exist as a sub-genre then I don’t think.
I was also doing the collected works of Stephen King in sixth grade. Also an eye-opener, and I still love his stuff. “It” scared the crap out of me. “The Stand” is one of my very favorite novels ever.
I think that was the year I really discovered that I liked spooky. And that I liked romance. Once I knew it was acceptable to put the two together, there was really no question about what I would write, given the chance! great question, an sorry if the answer was long-winded:-)
[Reply]
Howdy Kendra, Thank You for being here today. I loved Call of the Highland Moon and can’t wait to pick up the 2nd book in October. (Grinning gleefully at the calendar)
Questions
If you could be any paranormal creature what would you be? Why?
Have you experienced anything paranormal in your life?

Glad to see you here today, the books sound like my kind of reads! A couple of questions, first what kind of hobbies or what do you like to do in your free time? Also if you could go on a vacation somewhere, where would it be and why?

[...] Spotlight, Contest) Sooo Kendra Leigh Castle is over at Bitten by Books today as the special Guest Blogger. She’s there to tell you how to keep the fantasy Furrrr-resh. And of course, there’s [...]
Hi Cander! I like these paranormal questions! Hmm, okay, let’s see…if I could be any type of paranormal creature, I think would be a werewolf. Or at least some sort of shapeshifter, but I like the idea of having all of that animal power and freedom at your command. Vampires are very cool, but I don’t really want to live forever.
I’ve had some really freaky things happen to me with ghosts, as far as real paranormal experiences go…my parents’ old house was haunted, and whoever it was hanging around that house had particular fun freaking me out. I was once chased out of a room by a remote controlled car with no batteries in it (or the remote). I do love to watch Ghost Hunters, but I would rather not have the experiences myself!
Thanks so much for the compliment…I’m excited for Dark Highland Fire to come out too!
[Reply]
Yep, Caden, there’s definitely going to be a third book. I just sent in the edits for Wild Highland Magic today! Which means I was up late finishing, and am kind of a zombie. But friendly, as opposed to the flesh-eating kind:-)
Lucky you with the Skype men! I have a cousin who speaks Cockney, and he’s so much fun to listen to, even if I don’t really understand a lot of the slang.
[Reply]
Hi Teresa! If the books sound good to you, I hope you check ‘em out:-) I actually posted an excerpt from Dark Highland Fire on the Sourcebooks paranormal author blog yesterday, which is http://www.wickedlyromantic.blogspot.com. So if anyone is interested, you can check out a passage there.
Hobbies…okay, I love music. LOVE music. All sorts of music. I am one of the crazy ipod people who has a library stuffed with things that don’t go together at all. Some of my favorite bands are British, like Muse, Keane, Travis, and Coldplay. It could be the accent thing again (heh heh), but I do love me some britpop. I also sing, though not in any organized way right now. I was the tenor in a barbershop quartet for a little while. When I have more time, someday in the future, I’d love to sing outside of my shower again!
Vacation-wise, I am basically a big dork. DisneyWorld is my bar none, hands-down favorite place to vacation. I have pictures of me with all the princesses, AND my favorite, the Wicked Queen! We’re going back next year with the kids, and we’re all excited (I am also married to a big kid, which works out well).
Thanks for the questions!

Hello Kendra,
I picked up Highland Moon the day it came out. I loved and have just finished reading for the third time. I can not wait for the next book. Reading for me is a passion and it gets me through a very tough times in my life. Your book help me escape for a bit while my husband was deployed and I was home as a “single” mom to our three kids. Thank you for a wonderful story. I can’t wait to see what happens next to the wolves of the highlands. I do have a question for you… You mentioned above that you enjoy take the basic characteristics of a creature and making them new, have you found that difficult at times especially because of all the new paranormal romances out there?
Best of Luck to you and thank you for allowing me to escape in to your world.

A book a day is an excellent policy:-) Since I just turned in my edits, I’m giving myself a couple weeks to breathe and read some books I’ve been eyeing before diving into something else. It’s like a mental health break!
[Reply]
Hi Steph! I am always happy to be of service to my fellow military wives:-) Did we meet on one of the other blogs? I think I was in awe of how long you had to be a “single” mom! Can’t tell you how cool that is that you’ve read the book three times now. I’ve got my favorites stuffed on a shelf, all ragged and well-loved, and knowing that my book is getting worn out by someone is totally amazing.
In answer to your question, I do worry a little when starting something new that it will end up being a double of somebody else’s thing. I DID have to change an important creature name once because, to my surprise, it had been done. But then a lot of us do seem to fish around in the same part of the creative ether for ideas, so there is always going to be a little overlap here and there. I generally just figure that we’ve all got our little quirks that we throw in, and I really do think that everyone’s vision of their beloved “monster” is slightly different. So I don’t worry TOO much. There should be room for us all!
[Reply]
I have to admit you are a new to me author but your books sound intriguing. Have you ever written any other genre?
[Reply]
Hi Kendra,
Thanks for guestblogging. I am always curious as to what kind of research was done so I will ask: “What kind of research did you do for both of these books?”
[Reply]
Hi Kendra,
Can’t wait to read Call of the Highland Moon, sounds fantastic.
I’m intrigued with the Drakkyn. How did you come up with that idea?
[Reply]
I really enjoyed reading Call of the Highland Moon and am looking forward to the release of Dark Highland Fire in October. Am also very glad to see there will be a third book! I love to read series books.
Do you prefer to write books in a series? Do you think you will write books that are not part of a series?
[Reply]
Hi Kendra!!!! So thrilled you are here! I love to chat over here and so glad to find you were the guest today! I so would love to be in the contest! Info below for entry is at end of post.
Kendra, I take comfort in reading those traditional vampire romances but too love those unique ones too and gosh yours so is that. MIK!!! Yum. See, I love historical romances and paranormals so when I heard about yours they immediately went to my wishlist. So glad there will be a third book (and can I hope for it to continue as a series?) With this, what else would you like to write as a genre within a historical? Is there another paranormal theme you’d like to write in a historical? What paranormal theme? What historical time period?
Thanks Kendra.
I’d love to be in the contest!

Oh I forgot to ask this! Its more of a fun question.
If you had to time travel back, just for one year, where and what time period would you go to (I’m assuming I may know this answer, but maybe you’ll surprise me). Along with that, you can only bring 3 things with you from the present to the past. What three things will you bring?
[Reply]
Yes we did meet on one of the other blogs a couple months ago. I am honored that you remember
You are so right about the different quirks. I think that is why i can stay reading the different paranormal romances. The are the same night and some day creatures that I love just a different take on them. I love finding those differences and going wow that is neat or I never thought of that.
[Reply]
Hi Kendra,
Good Morning and I love the premise to your two books. What inspired this? Doe sit inspire all your work or does something inspire each one?
What comes first: plot or characters for you?

Have you ever been to the Highlands? how do you chose the setting for a story line
[Reply]
Morning, everyone! I’m on eastern time in NC right now, so I didn’t catch the later questions last night…here I am playing catch-up:-)
Hi, catslady! I’m glad you’re intrigued! No, I haven’t written any other genre. I did write a fantasy romance for my very first try at a book, but that one lives in my closet. Other than that, it’s all paranormal!
[Reply]
Hi Cherie! Research…well, I did some geographical research, since I had to pick a part of the Highlands, and wanted it to be accurate. I looked at an actual estate in the Western Highlands for ideas, as well (just online, sadly, though that’s a trip I would LOVE to take!). Otherwise, that’s the nice thing about dealing with an otherworld…it’s all about imagination and just managing to keep track of what you’re building! And being from Northern New York, I didn’t need to do any research for that setting in Call of the Highland Moon…it was my little love letter to where I grew up:-)
[Reply]
Hi Lilly!
I wish I had a better answer for where I came up with the Drakkyn, LOL…I’m trying to remember my thought process on that. It went something like, I wanted to come up with a race of otherworlders, which then got connected to the werewolves’ past, which then turned into this series of loosely-related otherworld tribes who alternately get along and try to eradicate one another. There was a fairly small kernel of an original idea, and it has definitely evolved a lot over time.
[Reply]
Hi annalisa!
I’m with you…I LOVE series books! I really enjoy picking up a book and knowing the world I’m about to slip into. It’s also fun to be able to “stay in touch” with favorite characters that way. This is why, at least right now, I see myself writing books in series, whether it’s this particular one or something different. I don’t like to let my characters go, and it’s cool to give secondary characters their own stories.
I’m glad you’re enjoying my series!
[Reply]
Hey, Caffey! Good to see you here!
I’m actually a leeeetle afraid of trying to write historicals, though I really do think I’ll try my hand at it at some point. Probably a medieval…I was totally hooked on Julie Garwood’s stories set in that time period. My characters all show up speaking with a very contemporary voice, especially my heroines, so I’m not sure I could make them behave well enough to populate a historical romance:-)
What time period and where? Definitely Regency England, somewhere in the country (near Derbyshire, maybe!). Prerequisite: I would have to have money and get to live in some sort of manor, thus heightening my Jane Austen-esque experience! Three things I would bring is a tough one. My ipod’s battery would eventually die, and that would stink. I would have to bring some modern make-up (cover-up and pressed powder, for sure). And definitely a picture of my family! Also possibly a favorite book, for down-time.
Cool question!
[Reply]
Stephanie, I agree, that’s some of the fun, getting to go “wow, that’s an interesting take” on whatever sort of creature. I love that there really aren’t any rules!
And yep, I definitely remember you:-) Hope life is more settled down for you these days!
[Reply]
I haven’t read any of your books — yet
, however I will be stopping at Borders on the way home from work ;). How did you come up with a totally new kind of supernatural? I love the whole star-crossed lover aspect of your novel. It’s a new take on one of my favorite premises. I can’t wait to read one of your books!
[Reply]
Morning, Dawn! All sorts of things inspire me: a song, other stories, movies, places…all kinds of stuff. I think writers are a pretty “inspirable” bunch (see my awesome grammar, ha).
My characters are generally clearer than my plot, to start. And then they drive a lot of the events, which has seemed to work out thus far. I’ll start with a general idea of where I want things to go, but once I drop a character into the set-up, all sorts of different things happen. Which is part of the fun:-)
[Reply]
Hi dorothy! Oh, I want to go to the Highlands so bad! Someday…my husband is open to it, as long as I promise to go to Poland with him (his grandparents are from there).
I choose settings that appeal to me, I guess. I’ve always loved the idea of the Highlands (and that accent!), so I went with it. Though I suppose that’s more the setting for Dark Highland Fire. Call of the Highland Moon is set in a semi-fictionalized version of the place I grew up, and I enjoyed doing that.
[Reply]
Hi, Chris! I really hope you enjoy the book…I really psyched for the second one to be in stores. I haven’t held a copy in my hand yet, and I can’t wait!
I love star-crossed romance too…it’s great to see the hero and heroine beat the odds (unlike a certain OTHER famous star-crossed pair). And with werewolves, you always have a litle of the Beauty and the Beast aspect, which is one of my favorite themes.
[Reply]

They are saying hopefully no deployment until 2010 or 2011 woohoo more then year together this time hehe. The kids are so happy about it too. So life is back to normal finally.
Good Luck to you and I hope we will have a chance to talk again.

Just curious, do you set aside time to write each day or do you go days without a thought then have a 24 hour writing marathon and what is the strangest place an idea or thought came up for your writing
[Reply]
I’m glad to hear it, Stephanie! My husband messed up his back for the second time, so no more flying for him…which is fine, because we’ve been doing the fighter pilot thing for a long time now. He’s switching career tracks to more of the acquisitions side of things, which is good, because no more deployments! Still, we’re in the process of moving, and it’s drawn-out, of course…life never settles down around here!! I’m so glad you’re doing well:-)

Hi Sandy! I try to find time every day, because it keeps the wheels turning, even if not much comes out. Everyone has easy days and hard ones. I love the days when words just pour from my fingertips, but most of the time, it’s stop and start and wrestling the story, bit by bit, out of my head.
I don’t know about strange places for ideas…I’m always thinking! I think a lot while driving, though…I’m sure there are some boring stretches of highway that have unwittingly created inspiration for me:-)
[Reply]
I devour all types of books but in the past I have steered clear of Werewolves and Vampires. In reading about Call of the Highland Moon I am intrigued by Gideon and Carly’s adventures. My question for you is how do you keep a story thats based in fantasy, from becoming to silly and childlike? I am excited to read these books and hear your response. Thanks
[Reply]
Have you written any other Genre? Do you have other subject interests that you plan to explore? Thanks for answering all our questions.
[Reply]
Hi Dawn! That’s a good question, about having things not be too childlike…I think that with me, I feel like I can let my imagination go as far as structuring the world, but I have to make sure that the situations that occur in it are reality-based. Things can’t get too shiny and happy…there are groups that don’t get along, bad things can happen as easily as good, and characters, whether they’re human or not, need to react in ways that adult readers can believe and relate to.
I haven’t been published in any other genre, and as far as writing goes, I plan to stick to paranormal romance, at least as of right now. I don’t know what I’d do if my characters couldn’t spice things up with a little bit of magic!
I hope you do check the books out, and that you enjoy them! I finally got one of my best friends reading werewolves and vampires, and she’s been yelling at me for her bookstore expenses because she’s completely hooked now:-)

As someone who recently spent a lot of time writing about blood sucking bisexual elves who look strangely like the Jonas Brothers, I know what you mean about “debris”. Do you think your Draaken came more from Kim Possible or The Monster Club? Its so blasted hard to come up with a good impressive name that has not already either been used in a video game, or is a strain of toenail fungus (”Grasping the sword of Onychomycosis he strode across the room…”)
