Warrior of the Highlands by Veronica Wolff
Haley Fitzpatrick is trying to decide on a dissertation topic when she discovers an interesting weapon in the university archives. As Haley examines the weapon further, she notices an engraving on the blade that marks it as belonging to “JG, from Magda”. Could it be? James Graham was a celebrated military hero in seventeenth-century Scottish history, but he had died before a weapon like this could have been made…or did he? Haley continued examining the gun, marveling at the flintlock and the filigree etchings. As she carefully returns the weapon to the cabinet, she notices a wooden panel lying on the table. She brushes it off, trying to see the drawing more clearly, and recognizes the sketch is of her, including her scar, and another person. The shock of recognition pulls Haley into darkness, and she awakens in a castle corridor.
Alasdair MacColla has entered the Campbell castle for one reason only: to rescue his sister. MacColla is a brave warrior with a fierce and violent reputation among the Highlanders, and believing Haley to be a Campbell, he abducts her to be used for barter at a later time. As MacColla, his sister, and Haley continue their journey, Haley impresses MacColla with her strength, courage, and fighting skills. The two grow closer, and when Haley is taken from a friend’s castle where they had stopped to rest, MacColla rushes to her rescue.
Haley falls in love with MacColla, recognizing that he is not the crude and dangerous man portrayed in history, but that history is causing her pain. She knows that MacColla dies in battle in Ireland and she is searching for a way to change the past. Will Haley be able to alter the outcome of the battle? Will she remain in Scotland or return to her previous life? Will the fates work together for the good, and allow Haley and MacColla happiness?
Loved it, loved it, loved it! I literally could not put this book down. Haley’s strength, spirit, and courage were inspiring. I enjoyed the contrasts in MacColla’s character, not expecting the bloodthirsty warrior would allow himself to love Haley so deeply. The characters were realistic, the descriptions were clear, the scenery was beautiful – what else can I say? Veronica Wolff has given us historical facts about a most fascinating character. I definitely recommend this book to anyone with Celtic blood, history buffs, true romantics…and I am looking forward to reading her next historical romance.
