Sex and Subterfuge by Isabel Roman

The great magicker families of Europe and America unite in the second book of the Dark Desires of the Druids novels. Lucien Granville, a side-character in the first book, has his turn at romance with the most powerful magicker on the American continent, Morgana Blackthorne. Instead of a peaceful romance, however, Morgana is swept into a political maelstrom as her former lover makes an attempt to seize power from her, and Lucien is caught in the middle.

I hate to admit it, but I had trouble getting into this book; at least, I had more trouble getting into it than I did its predecessor in the Dark Desires of the Druids series. I still enjoyed it but I kept picking it up and putting it down; something just didn’t click in this book. The plot was there, but it wasn’t as compelling as it could have been - the heroine is powerful enough that her challenger never felt like much of a threat, and the romantic angle felt a bit rushed. I think this book had a lot of potential and could have benefited from expansion - more pages, a better editor, and some fleshing- out might be what Sex and Subterfuge needed.

Overall, though, this isn’t a bad continuation of the series. I will definitely continue reading, and hope that the third book goes back to the intensity and quality of the first.

Thanks for the honest review. Though Lucien holds a special place in my heart, I can admit this was the weakest out of the 4. Still, I’m glad it didn’t stop you from continuing to read Book 3. Please let me know how you enjoy Book 4!
