SECRETS AND LIES

Part of the fun of doing Book 6 of the Morganville Vampires series, Carpe Corpus, was resolving some of the mysteries of the town of Morganville itself.  For those who haven’t been introduced to Morganville, it’s a small, dusty town in the middle of Nowhere, Texas … but it’s not your everyday wide spot in the road, either.  It’s a closed society full of secrets and lies, most of which revolve around the vampires who built the town as their own safe haven — and desperate last stand. *****

The most exciting Morganville Vampires novel yet, Carpe Corpus is an absolutely phenomenal read. Rachel Caine has written a book that takes everything readers think they know about vampires and college life, then turns it into a wild ride full of bone-chilling excitement and shocking twists. The Morganville plots are always exquisite with no plot-thread ever forgotten, and this book is no different.

Claire Danvers and her friends are back, this time facing their greatest adversary - an old, powerful vampire named Bishop whose nefarious plans could turn the balance of power in their vamp-ridden college town of Morganville upside-down and inside-out. Coupled with this is the arrival of Claire’s own family, more pawns in the lethal chess game that the key players of Morganville are playing out. (more…)

Midnight Alley by Rachel Caine

*****

Still trapped at Texas Prairie University - not just below her academic potential, but overrun with vampires, too - freshman Claire Danvers has even more problems than when she started. Bound by oath (and reciprocal protection) to the lead vampires of Morganville, Claire now faces the issues of having a vampire landlord and best friend, mysterious “night school” lessons in alchemy, and a new streak of popularity due to her supernatural connection. Of course, danger still lurks in the back alleys and shadows, and in Morganville, danger is usually lethal.

****½

Picking right up where its cliffhanger predecessor left off, the second book in the Morganville Vampires sequence is a thrill-ride from beginning to end. Held captive in their own, “haunted” house, college girls in vampire-dominated town-from-hell Claire and Eve fight to protect themselves from their friend Shane’s terrifying father. But even when they gain freedom, it turns out to be only temporary, as a vampire turns up dead and Shane is held responsible. (more…)

Glass Houses by Rachel Caine

****½

Glass Houses offers a unique twist on the classic “us vs. them” anti-vamp scene. Marketed as a young adult read, it certainly does play to its suggested reader-base, but it’s a fun enough romp on the light side of dark that the non-teen can enjoy it.
