In Allie’s world, magic has not been around all that long. Magic also exacts a price for its use. If the user forgets to set a spell, then magic comes back to bite them in the butt. Because of this, magic is a highly regulated field. Allie left school to resist her father’s influence and instead becomes a Hound. Her job involves tracing the use of magic back to the user. If a user does something illegal, like offload the cost of their magic onto an innocent, then Allie can trace it back to them. She tries to avoid her father’s influence, but when her current case involves her father, she gets thrown into the middle of a battle that may be older than her.

Deadly Desire by Keri Arthur

Posted under Book Reviews, Ghosts, Psychics, Shapeshifters, Urban Fantasy, Vampires, Zombies by Virginia on Thursday 30 April 2009 at 1:00 pm

Riley Jensen is not very good at avoiding danger, in fact, it seems to find her. She is investigating a series of murders of young girls, and a rash of vampire slayings. She suspects that the two are somehow related when she feels the prickle of a witch’s magic when pursuing a lead in the case. In the midst of investigating for the Directorate, Riley runs into Kye Murphy, who once worked for her former pack leader. She must fight her attraction to him if she plans on catching the killers in her investigation. Despite warning him off several times, Kye continues to pursue the leads. Will they be able to work together to catch the murderers? And will Riley be able to remain true to Quinn, her vampire lover?

I have to give this book Five Tombstones. The Riley Jensen books by Keri Arthur were actually some of the first paranormal books I bought. I confess to reading the series out of order (I came from a non-series romance background-what can I say?), but I was not overly confused with the plot line of each book. Deadly Desire does refer to previous events in the series, but I did not get totally lost even though I have not had a chance to read The Darkest Kiss yet. Riley Jensen is an intriguing character. She wrestles with keeping herself intact, even as she gets drawn deeper and deeper into the world of being a Guardian. Riley is portrayed as a very sexual woman, which is due to her werewolf side. She is at odds with trying to keep that part of her tapped down as she pursues her current relationship with Quinn. I also find Quinn to be very exciting and fascinating and enjoy the brief glimpses we get of him throughout the book. Deadly Desire is the perfect continuation to an already great series, there is something for almost everyone to be found in this book, vampires, shapeshifters, witches, and zombies, what is there not to like about it? If you have not picked up any of the books in the Riley Jensen series, you are definitely missing out! I would not say that the books need to be read in order, but I would recommend that you do. You will not be disappointed.

Book Excerpt: “Seduction that kills. Pleasure to die for. She just can’t resist . . .

Guardian Riley Jenson always seems to face the worst villains. And this time’s no different. For it’s no ordinary sorceress who can raise the dead to do her killing. But that’s exactly what Riley expects to find at the end of a trail of female corpses used—and discarded—in a bizarre ritual of evil. With pressure mounting to catch one fiend, another series of brutal slayings shocks the vampire world of her lover, Quinn. So the last thing Riley needs is the heat of the upcoming full moon bringing her werewolf hormones to a boil—or the reappearance of a sexy bounty hunter, the rogue wolf Kye Murphy.”

Passion Unleashed by Larissa Ione

Wraith was always getting into trouble but he knew that his brothers would bail him out. This time, he has gotten in over his head. He’s been infected with a slow-acting poison that has may have no known antidote. When they discover that a keeper of a charm may be the answer, Wraith thinks he will do what he has to in order to save his life. What he does not count on is falling in love with Serena, the keeper, or the indecision he faces when he finds that if he takes her charm, she will die. Add to that the stress that Armageddon is imminent and Wraith is faced with a tough choice. Will he choose to let Serena live or will he take the charm to save him and his brothers?

I give this book 5 tombstones. Wow. I do not even know where to begin! Larissa Ione has outdone herself with the story of Wraith. In the first few books, it was really difficult to get a grasp on who he is, but inPassion Unleashed, a side of him appears that no one would have thought he would have. The chemistry between him and Serena is dynamic. I was pulled into this story from the first page. The action is intense and non-stop. I was engrossed and enthralled with Passion Unleashed. There were some storylines that were introduced that I cannot wait to see followed up on in future books in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed Passion Unleashed and highly recommend adding this series to your library. The books should be read in order, since there are parts that build upon the previous books.

Book Excerpt:“FORBIDDEN TEMPTATIONS

Serena Kelley is an archaeologist and treasure hunter-and a woman with a secret. Since she was seven, she’s been the keeper of a powerful charm that grants her health and immortality . . . as long as she stays a virgin. But Serena isn’t all that innocent. And when a dangerously handsome stranger brings her to the brink of ecstasy, she wonders if she’s finally met the one man she cannot resist.

FATAL DESIRES

Wraith is a Seminus demon with a death wish. But when an old enemy poisons him, he must find Serena and persuade her to give him the only known antidote in the universe-her charm. Yet, as she begins to surrender to his seductions and Wraith senses the cure is within his grasp, he realizes a horrible truth: He’s falling for the woman whose life he must take in order to save his own.”

Desire Unchained by Larissa Ione

Posted under Adult Content, Book Reviews, Demons, Kindle, Shapeshifters, Vampires by Virginia on Wednesday 29 April 2009 at 9:35 pm
****½

Desire Unchained is the second book in the Demonica series by Larissa Ione. Shade has never expected to see Runa Wagner again, so imagine his surprise when he wakes up in a dungeon with her chained in the same cell as him. Runa, on the other hand, has not quite forgiven him for the night that led to her being attacked and turned into a werewolf. However, they must work together to outwit the demon that is holding them. To add to the complications in their “relationship”, when the change overtakes Shade while in captivity, he and Runa find themselves bonded. Will Shade be able to overcome the curse that was placed on him by a warlock, and will they be able to thwart the plans of their evil captor?

I give this book 4 1/2 tombstones. I really loved Pleasure Unbound, the first book in the series and have been looking forward to the next. I was intrigued by the Seminus Demon characteristics of each brother and how they each have some reason to fight and hold off the change that comes over them. In Desire Unchained, Shade was cursed by a warlock and therefore does not want to fall in love with any supernatural woman because of the curse. His brothers have a plan, but once Shade finds himself bonded, he cannot go along with their plan.

I especially liked Runa. There were some interesting facets to her character. I also had fun reading some of the subplots in the novel and I hope that Ms. Ione writes a book on some of the other characters found in this series. I think Larissa Ione has found a great balance in the paranormal romance genre and I am excited about reading her third book in the series, Passion Unleashed. I do recommend that you read this series in order as there are references in the second book back to actions in the first book.

Book Excerpt: “Pleasure is their ultimate weapon . . .

Runa Wagner never meant to fall in love with the sexy stranger who seemed to know her every deepest desire. But she couldn’t resist the unbelievable passion that burned between them, a passion that died when she discovered his betrayal and found herself forever changed. Now, determined to make Shade pay for the transformation that haunts her, Runa searches for him, only to be taken prisoner by his darkest enemy.

A Seminus Demon with a love-curse that threatens him with eternal torment, Shade hoped he’d seen the last of Runa and her irresistible charm. But when he wakes up in a dank dungeon chained next to an enraged and mysteriously powerful Runa, he realizes that her effect on him is more dangerous than ever.

As their captor casts a spell that bonds them as lifemates, Shade and Runa must fight for their lives and their hearts-or succumb to a madman’s evil plans.”

Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione

****½

Tayla Mancuso is a Guardian and demon slayer. She has an extreme hatred towards demons, and has trouble accepting that she desires one, even one as good looking as Eidolon. She met him when he saved her life. However, she must put her personal desires aside in order to do her job and prove her loyalty to the Aegis. Eidolon has built the hospital of his dreams. His job as cheif of staff is to provide treatment to almost everyone, with few exceptions.

When a slayer is brought into his emergency room, his oath forces him to treat her, despite the wishes of his brothers and fellow staff. He does not anticipate being attracted to her, and writes it off to the changes that his body is undergoing. He discovers that Tayla has a little secret of her own that she is unaware of and he must decide how best to break it to her. But, he loses time as they discover that someone is harvesting demon organs and the signs all point to the Aegis. Tayla and Eidolon must work together to get to the bottom of the mystery. Can she overcome her hatred of demons enough to help them, even though it requires her turning her back on all that she has grown up believing?

I give this book 4 1/2 tombstones. While the book contains the scary demons that everyone thinks of at the mention of demons, I really like the idea of humanoid looking demons who are not evil all the time. Eidolon is a complex character on so many levels. His restraint in his emotions, His resistance to his body’s changes, and his relationships with his brothers and other people. Ms. Ione allows for some humor within the book as well. The reference to Tayla as “Buffy” had me laughing. Tayla was a fascinating character as well. She was strong when it came to her hatred and her loyalty to her fellow guardians, but she had a soft, vulnerable side as well. The chemistry between Eidolon and Tayla was riveting as well. The sex scenes were passionate and exciting as well. I really loved this book. I think Ms. Ione came up with a winner in her plot line this plot line that starts out in a demon hospital. I look forward to reading the next installment in the series which will revolve around one of Eidolon’s brothers. If you like books about demons, then pick this one up today. You will love it!

Book Excerpt: “She’s a demon-slayer who hungers for sensual pleasure-but fears it will always be denied her. Until Tayla Mancuso lands in a hospital run by demons in disguise, and the head doctor, Eidolon, makes her body burn with unslakable desire. But to prove her ultimate loyalty to her peers, she must betray the surgeon who saved her life.

Two lovers will dare to risk all.

Eidolon cannot resist this fiery, dangerous woman who fills him with both rage and passion. Not only is she his avowed enemy, but she could very well be the hunter who has been preying upon his people. Torn between his need for the truth and his quest to find his perfect mate before a horrific transformation claims him forever, Eidolon will dare the unthinkable-and let Tayla possess him, body and soul . . .”
