Bitten by Books is excited to welcome author Cheryl Brooks today as our featured Guest Blogger! She will be talking with you today and answering questions. Check out the contest at the end of this post! You could win the amazing prize Cheryl is offering up!

****************************************************

Whenever I look at the Bitten by Books homepage, I have to smile because while the men in my books may have fangs, they aren’t vampires, just big, purring, alien kittycats!

I haven’t explored much about getting bitten by one of them until some of the later books in the series, but Rogue, which is my current release and the third in The Cat Star Chronicles series, has something the others don’t have: a threesome.

Now, I know a lot of people might be turned off by this (though I’m sure there are just as many who will be turned on!) but two gorgeous Zetithians are more than our heroine—or anyone else—can resist. While I was writing it, I knew I wouldn’t refuse them, myself, and I was running out of reasons why my heroine would. My editor took some convincing, but when she finally read the scene, she said she wouldn’t change a word of it, so I didn’t.

To give you an overview, Rogue is the tale of two Zetithian brothers, Trag and Tychar, who were captured and sold into slavery near the end of the war that resulted in the near extinction of their kind. They have been the pampered pets of a Darconian queen for the past twenty years, and though their lives haven’t been hard, being the lone humanoid males on a planet populated by lizards hasn’t allowed them much in the way of sexual gratification. However, the progressive Queen Scalia has hired a human female, Kyra Aramis, to give piano lessons to her daughter.

Alone on a world filled with intelligent, but fearsome dinosaurs, Kyra is understandably nervous, and the discovery that she is not the only humanoid on the planet offers only a brief comfort. When Tychar is assigned to be Kyra’s personal attendant, though he and Trag are both irresistible, there are two of them, and worst of all, they are slaves to the Queen. What’s a girl to do?

Just as my heroes are different—pampered pets as opposed to abused slaves—so is my heroine. In Slave, Jacinth was tough, space savvy, and never at a loss in difficult situations. Warrior’s heroine, Tisana, was a powerful witch with a sharp tongue and eyes that could literally shoot fireballs. Kyra, however, is a bit more timid, and the fact that she has decided to take a teaching post on a distant world surprises her friends and family alike. However, like all good heroines, she gets the chance to grow in strength as a person and as a woman in love.

In tough economic times like these, books are a great, inexpensive way to escape the trials and tribulations of everyday life. So, if you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to live and work on an alien world, come on along for the ride. I’ll take you places you’ve never even dreamed of, and while you’re there, you’ll get some idea of what it would be like to have two adorable guys who would give anything to be yours.

So, what about it, ladies? Ever been in a situation where two sexy, love-starved men are vying for your affection? If so, what did you do? And if you haven’t, what would you do?

Bitten by Books is excited to welcome author Casey Daniels today as our featured Guest Blogger! She will be talking with you today and answering questions. Check out the contest at the end of this post! You could win the amazing prize Casey is offering up!

****************************************************

I love cemeteries.  No, really, I mean it.  I love to visit cemeteries.  Oh, not those newfangled “memorial parks” where every headstone is close to the ground and there are no trees and (not incidentally) no atmosphere.  I mean a good, old cemetery.  You know, the kind with sculptures and interesting headstones and mausoleums galore.

In fact, I once interviewed for a part-time job as a tour guide at a historic cemetery in Cleveland near where I live.  I didn’t get the job, but as I was leaving the cemetery, I did get the idea for Pepper Martin.

Pepper’s spoiled and beautiful, a feisty redhead who was raised with all the privileges that came along with her upper-middle class upbringing.  But then her cosmetic surgeon dad went to prison for Medicare fraud.  And her status-conscious fiancé dumped her.  With no place to turn, Pepper took a job as a tour guide at Garden View Cemetery.

Boring!  At least that’s how Pepper sees the job.  But boring or not, it should have been a piece of cake.  It would have been, if not for the fact that Pepper tripped and hit her head on a mausoleum one day.  After that?

Well, that’s when the ghosts started showing up.

In the first three installments of the series (Don of the Dead, The Chick and the Dead and Tombs of Endearment), Pepper dealt with dead-but-not-gone mobsters, a famous author and a sexy (too bad he was dead) rock star.  They all had a couple things in common.  For one, they couldn’t cross over to the Other Side until all their unfinished business was finished and their murders were solved.  And the other?  Each ghost threatened to haunt Pepper unless she investigated their cases.  Now, in Night of the Loving Dead, the fourth installment of Pepper’s adventures, Pepper’s headed to Chicago for a cemetery conference.  Of course she has no idea that she’s about to find danger behind every gravestone.

It all starts when the annoying ghost of a researcher convinces Pepper to look into the mysterious disappearance of the homeless patients at a clinic.  Easier said than done, especially when Pepper finds out her newest investigation involves an old friend, a ghost with a hidden agenda, and a curse the likes of which might mean that Pepper herself disappears into the Other World.

Can you tell I’m excited about the new book?  And about working on subsequent Pepper Martin adventures?  There’s always some new ghostly happening to think about and an added bonus–I can visit cemeteries to do my research!

How about you?  Do you enjoy visiting cemeteries?  Back when I started hanging around with the tombstone crowd, no one else admitted they enjoyed this curious pastime.  But lately, I’m finding more and more people willing to own up to it.  There’s so much history in a cemetery, so much interesting art and architecture.  As for the ghosts . . . well, I’m finding that lately, more people are willing to talk about that subject, too.  Are you a believer?  I am.  In fact, I once took some pictures at an old inn in Pennsylvania that just might prove Pepper isn’t the only one in contact with the Other Side!

Night of the Loving Dead by Casey Daniels

Posted under Book Reviews, Ghosts, Kindle by Carol on Thursday 26 February 2009 at 7:00 am
****½

As Night of the Loving Dead the fourth installment in the entertaining Pepper Martin series opens, we find our heroine in peril at the hands of a nefarious doctor. Drugged and immobile, Pepper’s thoughts flash back to how her ordeal began. Understandably, given her current predicament, the first event that comes to mind is the pleasant memory of the night she and Quinn spent together a few days earlier. The next day, Pepper ends up attending a cemetery conference in Chicago as a substitute for her sick boss, Ella. Though not overjoyed at the prospect, Pepper realizes she has little choice but to deliver the paper Ella is scheduled to present.

While on a field trip to a local cemetery, Pepper comes upon a ghost who seeks to enlist her aid in saving a mutual acquaintance, Dan, the brain man, from his involvement with an unsavory doctor and the suspect scheme he is running in his free clinic. It seems that the doctor uses the local homeless population for his experiments, and that some of them disappear. Madeline, the ghost, was the doctor’s assistant before her death, and wants Pepper to somehow extricate Dan from the potentially dangerous situation. As is usually the case, Pepper puts herself in jeopardy during the course of her investigation.

Often in response to her predicaments in each novel in the series, Pepper becomes progressively more self-sufficient, and in the process becomes more aware of both her limitations and capabilities. Though she may often be characterized as self-involved, Pepper also cares about others, alive and dead, and consistently does what is necessary to right the wrongs of the past, often affecting the present in the process.

Daniels incorporates more action and an additional paranormal element into Night of the Loving Dead, ratcheting up the suspense a notch yet wisely not sacrificing Pepper’s special brand of humor. The effective weaving of an unexpected surprise into the plot adds to the appeal of the novel. This book satisfies on both the mystery and paranormal levels, building upon the previous three to reach page-turner status.

Supernatural News Interviews Horace the Gargoyle

Bitten by Books is excited to welcome Horace the Gargoyle created by author Linda Wisdom today as our featured Guest Blogger! He will be talking with you today and answering questions. Check out the contest at the end of this post! You could win the amazing prize Horace is offering up today!

****************************************************

Horace Tells All

The gray stone eight-inch gargoyle wasted no time in checking out the gorgeous Siren sitting in the red velvet chair across from him. A floating camera hovered just over her shoulder. After a cursory check that nothing was on his horns, he smiled at the Siren known as Serena with a voice that lured many a poor mariner to his doom. Now she softened her song to entice viewers to watch her gossip program on the SNN – Supernatural Network News.

Serena – “Thank you for agreeing to talk to us today, Horace. You told my producer that you have a lot of delicious gossip about the witch Stasi Romanov and that oh so hot wizard Trevor Barnes.” She leaned forward, her eyes alight to anticipation.

Horace - “Yeah, I’ve got some prime material for you that no one knows. Sure, I know Linda wrote Wicked by Any Other Name, which is about Samhain in Moonstone Lake and what happened to Stasi, Blair and the others, but was she really there? No. I was.” He pointed his claw at his chest.

Serena – “And?”

Horace – “First, everyone knows Stasi is the sweetest witch of the bunch. Probably why she’s The Librarian’s favorite. She always returned scrolls and spell books on time and she gave that smarmy wizard the respect he felt he was due.” He leaned forward and cupped his claws against his cheek as he confided. “She’s got a dark side.”

Serena’s eyes lit up – “Tell us more, darling. I had no idea. She’s always so adorable when I shop in her gorgeous lingerie boutique and I love the idea she carries romance novels there too. The enchanted sachet she adds to every purchase has increased my love life too.”

Horace lifting his eyebrows – “Really?” He leaned forward. “You like gargoyles?” He sighed under her wilting gaze and sat back. “Fine. It was one of those sachets that got her into serious trouble with a human. She was accused of hexing a sachet so a woman’s cheating husband wouldn’t return. That’s where Trev comes in as the plaintiff’s attorney in Wizards Court. And as if that’s not bad enough, Stasi’s seriously pissed off Cupid and he’s found a way to interfere with her love life in a big way. Then there’s the lake all messed up from some strange magick.”

Serena – “We know that the town of Moonstone Lake was cut off by a horrible snowstorm and your electricity was out. How did you manage during that time?”

Horace – “All that was magick and let me tell you, whoever crafted that blizzard must have pissed off Mother Nature big time. She can put the fear into anyone.”

Serena – “But what does this have to do with Stasi and that sexy Trev?”

Horace – “Easy, people got scared when the town lost its power and Carrie, the one who was suing Stasi started calling her witch and not in a nice way. Plus the lake acting up made them scared too. Even got the town ghosts nervous. So it wasn’t a good time.”

Serena – “And what about you? Do gargoyles feel fear? Did you help Stasi?”

Horace, highly offended – “Fear? No way! Hey, I’m Mr. Tough Gargoyle. I was with them every step of the way. You think I was going to let anyone hurt Stasi?”

Serena, skeptical – “But what about the rumor of red hearts over Stasi and Trev’s heads?”

Horace – “It just goes to show you don’t tick off Cupid. And I’ve gotta say if it wasn’t for me the lake wouldn’t be back to normal and the townspeople feeling safe again. Hey!” He looked back to see the tip of his tail smoking. “Okay, who did that!” Fear crossed his gray stone face. “Uh, Stasi, good to see ya, babe!” He hopped off his chair. “Look at the time. I’m late. Good to talk to you, Serena. Give me a call.” He ambled off.

Serena struggled to keep her expression bright. “Well, that was Horace, the gargoyle from Moonstone Lake and companion to witch Stasi Romanov. If you have any questions for Horace feel free to email them to sirenscall at supernaturalnetwork.com and we’ll post his answers here.

What about you readers? What questions would you like to ask Horace?

Tombs of Endearment by Casey Daniels

Posted under Book Reviews, Ghosts, Kindle, Magic by Carol on Wednesday 25 February 2009 at 8:01 am
****

When Tombs of Endearment, book three of this enjoyable series opens, Pepper is relishing her life having been ghost-free for a few months. Though she has not seen or been visited by any ghosts, she is fairly certain that the ghost of Damon Curtis, the former lead singer from the group Mind at Large who died over thirty years ago, has been attempting to contact her in not-so-subtle ways, such as her car radio playing the band’s songs non-stop.

Curtis first appears to Pepper at the very end of book two, so the reader knows from that set-up that he will be the next ghost in need of assistance. When the band comes to town for a big reunion concert, Pepper decides to seek out Damon’s ghost to find out what he wants. Imagine Pepper’s surprise when she hears the accusation that one of the surviving band members has been using black magic to channel Damon in order to write songs. Her mission clear, Pepper sets out to break the chains holding Damon to this plane, but, as is usual for her predicaments, there ends up being much more to the story.

Though these paranormal mysteries are fun and entertaining as they are, Daniels wisely adds some new ingredients into the mix this time around. Pepper discovers some additional aspects to her Gift and becomes more accepting of it. On the romantic front, Pepper continues to be intrigued by and lust after both Quinn the detective and Dan the mystery man, but Daniels adds some emotional resonance from another angle. Joel, Pepper’s former fiancé, also appears for the first time in the series, and his introduction serves to further explore Pepper’s character.

Daniels employs humor with a deft hand, not trying too hard to be funny, often resulting in laugh-out-loud moments for the reader. When Quinn, the sexy detective, keeps showing up at every crime scene she comes into contact with, Pepper wonders: “Just my luck. Was he the only damned cop in Cleveland?” (231). This series effectively blends paranormal elements with intriguing mysteries, featuring an entertaining heroine the reader enjoys rooting for.

Don of the Dead by Casey Daniels

Posted under Book Reviews, Ghosts, Kindle by Carol on Wednesday 25 February 2009 at 8:00 am
****

Pepper Martin’s life has changed forever: her doctor father has been jailed for Medicare fraud, her mother has left town to avoid the scandal, her former fiancé dumped her when word of her father’s predicament got out, and the only job she has been able to find is as a cemetery tour guide. Pepper cannot imagine how matters could get much worse, so she is taken completely by surprise when she starts hallucinating, “seeing” a mob leader who has been dead for thirty years, Gus Scarpetti.

While conducting a tour, Pepper suddenly realizes that three days earlier when she caught her heel and fell, it was Gus’s mausoleum that she hit her head against. Pepper’s immediate response is to return to the doctor who treated her to determine if the injury led to her hallucination. While at the ER, Pepper meets Dan, a handsome “geek god,” so she figures the trip was not a total waste despite her doctor laughing off the connection between hitting one’s head and seeing things. The next day, Gus confronts Pepper in her office, claiming to be a ghost, asking Pepper for her help in solving his murder thirty years earlier. Eventually, Pepper comes to believe Gus, and reluctantly agrees to assist him. While investigating, Pepper meets yet another hot guy - Quinn, the detective - and light romantic entanglements ensue.

Though the book is infused with humor, it also deals with weightier subjects. The dramatic changes in Pepper’s life necessitate her questioning her former priorities. Daniels does an excellent job of portraying Pepper as someone struggling to redefine herself and find her way on paths she never expected to travel, a process further complicated by seeing a ghost. Secondary characters within the story are well-developed and are woven successfully into the plot.

With its underlying mystery effectively propelling the story, this first book in the series may be more aptly classified as a mystery with paranormal undertones rather than as a paranormal tale with an underlying mystery. Resolving the whodunit aspect of the novel, Daniels leaves the reader with a few unanswered questions, paving the way for subsequent installments.

Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs by Molly Harper

Posted under Book Reviews, Ghosts, Shapeshifters, Vampires by Lyda on Wednesday 25 February 2009 at 8:00 am
****½

Jane Jameson has had a very, very bad day. First she loses her job as a librarian so her boss’s stepdaughter can be hired to do a less than mediocre job and play with fires (while working with the books!). To cap off the evening, she decides to drown her sorrows in liquor. But on her way home, her car just up and dies leaving her to walk, drunk in not so sensible sandals on dark, dirty country roads. Then of course she just has to fall in a ditch, which would have no been so very awful if she was not shot by another drunken idiot who had mistaken her for a deer. Seriously beyond all that, dying and waking up as a vampire was just icing on the cake.

Gabriel Nightengale saw Jane at the bar and somehow wanted to keep watch over her, protect her. So he kept her company while she drank fruity drinks, walked her to her vehicle and followed her on her way home. Something just compelled him to make sure she made it safely. Unfortunately, he did not follow closely enough to prevent her from…well…getting shot and bleeding to death. But he could save her life by giving her a chance at immortality. If he could just persuade her to accept his help and guidance now that she has awakened as the newly undead, it would make things a whole lot easier.

Could you believe there’s a welcoming committee for the newly undead? And a guide book? Well, there is! Now if only the guide came with basic instructions for women like Jane, then it would make the undead life a piece of cake. However, there are things about being a vampire that one just has to learn from experience - like be careful when picking a fight with any vampire, because they could end up deader than dead and you could be blamed for their murder.

Vampires have rules. Worse than that, they have their own judges and juries…and their own executioners, too. So Jane’s undead life might be cut short if she doesn’t figure out who framed her and soon.

If you are looking for a new read or a new author to get into, Molly Harper’s Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs is the book for you. It shows literary wit at its finest. This story is not only entertaining and funny, it’s also charming and a joy to read. Did I mention the engaging quips? Ms. Harper’s debut to the published world is one that definitely deserves noting, and I, for one, am looking forward to her next book, Nice Girls Don’t Date Dead Men. Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs definitely has a memorable bite.

The Chick and the Dead by Casey Daniels

Posted under Book Reviews, Ghosts, Kindle by Carol on Wednesday 25 February 2009 at 8:00 am
****

The second installment in the enjoyable Pepper Martin series picks up right where book one, Don of the Dead ends: with the appearance of the 1950’s ghost Didi. Apparently, word of Pepper’s “gift’ is spreading throughout the ghost world, thanks to her solving of Gus Scarpetti’s thirty-year-old murder. Didi’s appearance to Pepper coincides with the visit of a famous author to Cleveland, and to Garden View Cemetery, where Pepper works. Merilee Bowman’s book So Far the Dawn, a Gone with the Wind-type saga, and the movie made from it inspire reenactments and obsessive collectors. Pepper’s boss, Ella, heads up the local fan club chapter and can barely contain her excitement, endeavoring to recruit Pepper to the cause. Just prior to meeting the unpleasant author, Pepper learns that Didi was Merilee’s sister and that authorship of the famous book may be in question.

In addition to the primary mystery of the story, there is also the ongoing puzzle over the illusive Dan Callahan, who may know much more about Pepper than he initially indicates, and the romantic situation with Detective Quinn Harrison. Both of these circumstances add depth to the story, as well as provide opportunities to further explore Pepper’s character. The first-person narration contributes to the reader’s understanding of Pepper and adds the deft touches of humor to the story. When her use of an expletive in front of one of the re-enactors earns the comment that a “proper lady” does not speak so, Pepper retorts: “I’ve got news for you, Joe…I’m no proper lady. You want proof, stick around. Something tells me that before I get out of here, I’m going to be using plenty of four-letter words” (119).

As with the first book in the series, The Chick and the Dead is primarily a mystery with paranormal elements. Mystery readers who either enjoy or do not mind a story involving ghosts should not be disappointed, and paranormal fantasy fans who like a good mystery should be satisfied, as well. Pepper’s reality-based and otherworldly entanglements produce an engaging tale.
