Just as its predecessor in the series did, the marvelous Sparks hooks the reader from its very first page and refuses to let go. When the book begins, fire investigator Anya works the scene of an extremely unusual case in which a man seems to have spontaneously combusted. An artifact collector, Bernard has many interesting items to which a whiff of magick clings, and Anya also senses that something even stronger has been at work in the hoarder’s home. (more…)

The atmospheric Afterlife begins with a bang as the aptly-named wraith, or soul-eater, Yasmin Stoker chases down and consumes a Revenant, or young vampire. Yasmin hunts unsuspecting young vampires for her soul sustenance, believing that to be her method of protecting humanity from the scourge of blood-suckers. Yasmin’s town of Shoregrave, England earns its renown as a tourist magnet ghost town for good reason – tons of ghosts really do hang around the place. (more…)
