Sanguine Shadows by Willa Okati

****

Darce, a hardened “cowboy” vampire, was only looking for a few shots of tequila at the bar, not a casual encounter with a young vampire more trouble than he was worth. However, when the young upstart gets into trouble with the Sanguine, an elite group of vicious elders, Darce finds himself looking out for Raven, and getting drawn into a web of vampiric intrigue in the process.

This is one of the hotter novellas I’ve read lately. The characters are beyond likable and beg to have more than just fifty-some pages dedicated to them. I’d like to learn more about both Darce’s and Raven’s histories, as well as what adventures they end up tackling in the future.

The plot, while not overly complicated (understandable, given the length of the book), is well-done, and the book feels as if it is set in a nicely-established universe. Great work, all around.
