Blood Bargain by Maria Lima

In a small hill country town in Texas, an illegal alien is missing and so are four teenagers. Just a coincidence? Keira Kelly does not think so. And what is with her vampire lover, Adam Walker? He seems to be off sex and a tad clumsy and weak lately. And why is her Change taking so long? She is more than ready to know what supernatural she is to become. Although she loves her wolf-shapeshifting brother and appreciates his help, she is tired of his babysitting her. Sound intriguing? It gets even better as Keira’s search for the missing and her attempts to help Adam result in her discovering more about her past and her future.

This second book in Ms. Lima’s Keira Kelly series is a real pager-turner. You can read it as a stand-alone since enough background is included to bring you up to speed, but I suggest you start with the first book, Matters of the Blood. Like its predecessor, it has some small errors that should have been caught in editing, but the story moves so well that it carries you right through them.

Both books are delightfully fresh and quite different from the dark, graphic paranormals flooding the market; but these are not light, fluffy reads, either. Ms. Lima has created a wonderful blend of paranormal, mystery and romance. She has a real knack for building characters you get to know and care about, and the setting she paints seems so real. She is also darn good at building suspense and keeping you guessing. Not only in her books, but as in: what will happen in book three and how soon can I get it?
