Freaky Friday Interview With Author Caitlin Kittredge’s Jack Winter
Here to answer your burning questions about life, the universe and everything—rogue mage and hero of Street Magic, Jack Winter.
Jack was generous enough to answer a few questions for this blog, and he’s ready to pop in and field queries from the general public—while his author gives away some fabulous prizes.
Here we go…
Jack, I see you have calluses from playing the guitar. What was the first song you learned to play?
That’d be “Yesterday”. Most likely, I was trying to impress a girl with what a sensitive bloke I could be. Don’t think it worked, because I ended up in a loud and abusive punk band playing an electric rather than sitting under a tree attracting a host of nubile fans.
Jack steps up to the bar and orders, what?
Newcastle Brown Ale with a whisky chaser. And yes, it’s “whisky”, not “whiskey”. I won’t argue with you heathens across the ocean.
Jack, what’s the best pub in London? Please don’t tell me any of those dark & dingy old man pubs either.
I live in the Mile End Road, so I consider my local to be the White Hart near the Whitechapel tube.
Jack how does using magic make you feel? Is there a rush or a gradual seduction to it’s use?
It’s a high like no other. It can make you feel alive or as if you’re dying. There’s no way to describe it unless you have a talent, except to say it’s the best ride you’ll ever take.
Jack – boxers or briefs? Or neither?
Well, you’re saucy, aren’t you? I guess you’ll just have to come and find out.
Readers feel free to ask Jack any questions you like!

Welcome to Bitten, Jack. Any man who enjoys a Newcastle has my undying respect. But inquiring minds want to know…how on earth do you get your hair to stay upright like that? I tease, I pick, I spray and nothing. Nada. Niente. Highly disappointing.
On a more serious note, if you had three words to describe Pete, what would they be?
(Facebooked, already a subscriber to the BBB newsletter and the Blood Bank, and added Caitlin to my blogroll)
Also added Caitlin as a friend on Facebook. I can’t believe I hadn’t done that already! Bad, bad reader…

Hi Jack.
So are you more of a curry or a fish and chips kind of bloke? And is there any such thing as a “casual” use of magic?
Hi Jack!!! Thanks for stopping by!!! I was in London a few years back in Feb, and it was a bit cold. When is the best time of year to visit London? Plus, what’s it like working with Caitlin?
Hi Jack Great meeting you! My question is what kind of woman interests you-small and dumb or full figured and sassy or some other combo?

Hi Jack, welcome to BBB!
Are you a dog or cat kind of guy?
Hey Caitlin–Can’t wait to get this book. My local bookstore didn’t have it on the release date and their computer still says they don’t have it. Never fear! This weekend I plan to go out and look for it. I just have to work 8 hours tomorrow before getting to it.
So, Jack, what kind of hobbies do you have that don’t involve magic? Or do they all tend to center around magic?
Also, what’s your favorite ice-cream flavor?

I RSVPed
So Jack, what is your fav place to eat out in London?
Hi Jack welcome to Freaky Friday at BBB. Which kind of guitar is your favorite to play? My SO is a musician also, he plays keys, his current favorite is a Yamaha Motif, however he has 12 key/piano/organs. How many guitars do you have?
Wow, now Jack you got me dang curious about the boxers, briefs, tightie whities, deal. Mm, I have this wild guess you go commando.. Oops, sorry can’t cheat on my were-bear Dev because Miss Bama would never let me live it down.
Though we do know another Jack and he goes by Jackalicious.
Mmm, my question is how delicious are you? Sorry just in a pervy state of mind right now.

Question for Jack. Have you been keeping an eye on Pete all these years or did you just come back into her sphere?
Hi, Jack! (& everyone else!) If you could go on a date with anyone from history – who would it be? What would you do?
Silly question.
I’ll think of something else. I’ll post again later!
Jack, do you have any phobias?
Caitlin, I can’t wait to read Blaxk & White! I was just telling a friend about it last night. Your books have been on my TBR list for the summer. I am looking forward to reading Night Life, too.
Have a lovely day everyone!
I can’t believe no one has asked this question yet.
Jack who would you choose Ginger or Mary Ann?
I’m sorry, I made a bad typo! (Note to self: glasses are a good thing!) I meant “Black & White”. Sorry – I just was embarrassed I make so many typos. Hehe.
Rocky – I thought about asking his take on redheads (being one myself), but that question didn’t come to mind! Nice job!!
Well, you’re a chatty bunch, aren’t you? I’ll do me best to answer these in order. Caitlin says I must, or she’ll do something horrible to me, like write me into a garden party. A garden party where they don’t serve liquor.
Elaine G – I do–got a tree of life on my back and a Santeria tat on me stomach. I don’t really remember how that one got there but I trust it was a fun night.
Chris – I’d tell you, but if I don’t say “Caitlin Kittredge”, she’ll make me do embarassing things in the next book. Or ten. She’s a mean one, that girl.
Rocky Shields – What on earth gives you the impression somebody like me watches that tripe? You must think I’m some kind of nonce with no taste. … It’s WUTHERING HEIGHTS.
Amy – SHE needs slack? What about ME? Pete’s the bossiest person on the face of this earth or any other…you think I’m hard on her, you’ve no idea what it’s like to live with her and forget to do the washing up.
Jackie U – Magic. And “bossy” “irritating” and “extraordinary”
Terri Q – Why, luv? Which are you?
Elie – Bloody hell, you birds are forward. I rather like it. It’s 5, luv. I’m in a band, you know.
cecile – I’d love to, if you don’t mind running into the occasional demon or revenant while we’re out carousing. Also, what is it with you all and my knickers? Are they really that fascinating?
Beet – Pete would say no. I would agree.
Virginia Hendricks – Aside from our original stuff, I do like to hammer away at “Submission” or “I Wanna Be Your Dog”. Gets the crowd up out of their coma at least. And Pete, darling, don’t take this wrong, but you’re absolutely “Beast of Burden” by the Stones.
synde – I have to stand behind me countryman on this one. Richard Hell’s getting a kick in the teeth.
Dianne – Probably Cornwall. I rather enjoy all of the little cottages and people’s funny accents.
Vic P – It’s close enough for me to stumble home afterwards without getting arrested.
Carmen R – That’s a secret.
Kimberly B – Learn how to cast a good strong shield hex. This keeps you from being eaten. As to the other–I look for a girl who’ll flirt with me on internet book sites.
PennyH – My neighborhood’s all curries, so that’s what I like these days. And no, not even if the nice man in the long black coat with the musty grimoire tells you so. Magic is like snake handling–you can try it once, but the chances are you’ll get bitten.
Heather C – I happen to like September for a visit–usually very pleasant, though a bit choked with German tourists.
Nancy Gilliland – This is likely the fifth time I’ve been asked what kind of woman I fancy…are you all trying to tell me something? Although I will say–a figure is a must. Shagging a clothes hanger with a head is rather painful.
MarnieColette – I do not cook. I have never cooked and I never will cook. The world is better off for it, trust me.
Medievalgrrl – Probably New York–I could be a rude bastard there and nobody would care.
Tiah B – Well! Since you’re trying to be prepared, luv…tea, fags and a biscuit. Breakfast of champions.
Seri – On my better days, put on a record, light a cigarette and lie on the sofa for a bit. Or drink. Drinking works quite well.
Ashley – I’d tell you but then Pete would kill me.
Lauren – See above, darling. And everything. Everything about working magic is dangerous if you lose control or don’t know what the bloody hell you’re doing in the first place. If you do it correctly–it’s quite safe. Well, safe-ish. In a sense. I don’t recommend finding out for yourself.
Liza – Glenfiddich. Thank you for not adding the superfluous “e”.
Beet – (Haven’t I seen you before?) It’s autumn…I hate the heat.
Ashley Madden – Cats, absolutely. Dogs are rather like drunken footie fans–endearing until they slobber on you.
Jessica – I play the odd bit of guitar, I go hunting for old grimoires and I support Man United.
DarkHeart – I spend a lot of time in graveyards as a necessity. I rather enjoy Brompton Cemetery–it’s quite and the ghosts aren’t overly talkative. But watch out for the mutant squirrels.
JessaSlade – I’m perfectly willing to let an attractive and statuesque woman beat me to a pulp, luv.
Kimberly S – When I remember to eat, I’m probably the least picky bloke on earth. The local curry stand does just fine.
Lorraine Minich – I’ve just got the one at the moment, a 1973 Les Paul that my guitarist left in my flat and never came back for. His loss, my gain.
Raonaid Luckwell – I’m quite tasty, if I do say so.
Patricia Barraclough – I was as surprised as she was when we met again. Probably more. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it, as the Americans say.
Libby L – Llamas. Can’t stand the bloody things. And I’d go on a date with Winston Churchill. I imagine we’d talk about cricket.
Rocky Shields – (Hello again, old friend.) Ginger, without a doubt. Posh girls are more trouble than they’re worth.
Wow!!! I saw you mentioned a garden party without liquor. That is a terrible punishment. To help keep Caitlin off your back, I’ll send a thought her way.
Caitlin – I have a copy of Black & White, and I can’t wait to start it. The main heroes physical attributes remind me a bit of Xena & Gabrielle, have you ever seen the show?
Hi Jack

Wow all the good questions were asked. Rao leave it to you to ask about the commando… My choice of course. And the last time I touched the Glenfiddich…. well it was a night to remember… that is if I could remember. Really if anyone knows about that Jan nite in 1991 please let me know. ‘

These wonderful interviews are downright deadly to my bank account. I loved the interview so much, I just bought 5 books of her books from Amazon. I’m going to have to start playing the lottery and win a bigger house just to find a place to put all my books LOL.
Jack, conjure me up some McVittles bisquits (chocolate) and a library, please?
Just in case my pitiful plea for cookies was not enough of a question, here’s another:
Which is your favorite Beatles Period: Liverpool or Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (That’s the kind of question you get when you admit to playing Yesterday.)
I’m so old I actually saw them play in their first US concert tour. I’m also so old that I don’t remember much of the St. Pepper’s period because I was…well, you don’t really need to know what I was doing then.
Oh, crud..I must be having Sgt. Pepper flashbacks ’cause I keep forgetting to write stuff down for the contest.
1. I bought 4 books, and pre-ordered one.
2. I asked to be friends on Facebook (and heaven knows I need friends).

Just want to say thanks to Jack and the puppetmaster who controls his universe for answering all of our questions today. Loved the biography Street Magic. Can’t wait until the next one comes out.
Jack, being a punk rock musician yourself, how do you rate classical musicians and their music? How much music theory do you know—do you read notes or is all your playing by ear and improvisation?
Contest stuff:
2 = yes
3 = yep
4 = facebook
5 = facebook & twitter
6 = tweeted (heatwave316)
Don’t you sometimes manipulate Caitlin, or is she always in control?
Have you ever had tea with the Queen Mother?
An aside for Rachel: RSVP’d luv, and got the chance to show up.
And here we are again. I thought I was done, but no, Caitlin’s threatening to take away me fags if I don’t answer more of these.
I don’t think she understands how badly it will go if I can’t poison my lungs with the sweet, sweet tar of life, quite frankly.
At any rate, here we go:
Sonya Hucks – What can I say, luv? I’m irresistible.
Sarah R – My first instinct is to say “piss drunk”, but I expect I’d also want to say goodbye to me favorite haunts and spend a bit of time with Pete. And neither…didn’t you know I’m the hero?
Jaqueline L – More clothing queries, ladies? All right, all right–I fall asleep in whatever I’m in. Be it all or nothing. If you catch my drift.
Shell the HOckeyvampiress – (Vampires and hockey? Brilliant.) I suppose a visit to our most polite former colony might not be out of the question. I think I’d be deported, though.
Storm – Of course, dear. Just as soon as you buy me a pint and bring me my very own unicorn.
As to your other question–can’t fucking stand the Beatles, aside from very few songs. Though I suppose the White Album was all right, if you’re stoned out of your gourd or trying to pick up a girl.
Carol – Depends on your definition of “out there”. Are we talking about “actively touring” or “knocking about Chelsea in ghost form”?
Christine M – See that blog thing Caitlin made me write–I favor Newcastle. As to accents, anything that doesn’t sound like they’re about to lock me up in Stalag 13.
janice – Just say when and where, luv. Let the good times roll.
Leanne Dynneson – I can’t read a lick…’s why I’m mostly a vocalist. Seriously, though…I’ve got a friend who’s mad for Mozart and he’s quite brilliant.
Shirley – Of course I do. I’m the charming one, after all. Why do you think she wrote my story in the first place? And depending who you ask, the Queen Mum is either an alien, a robot or a bit of both. So no, I don’t fancy getting invovled in that.
Hi Jack! Do you put the toilet seat down? That’s important!
I’m subscribe to BBB newsletter, put my question in to Jack, friends with Caitlin on MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, as well as added her to my blog roll!

Okay, I haven’t read the book yet, so here is the question that comes to mind from the amazon description…. What kind of Spirit were you trying to summon on that fateful day?

Hello Jack! Thanks for the great interview!

Hey Jack, What would be your dream date?
Oh, bollocks. A new day and still, the questions come.
Caitlin’s giving me the evil eye…suppose I better answer…bloody woman.
Answers:
Caffey – Clearly, you’ve never been in a punk club gent’s loo.
Beverly G – If I had to estimate, I would say a fair few. And lots of them, if they’re Americans.
Caden Leigh – I don’t particularly like it when her ex shows up and punches me in the gob. To be fair, that only happened once but it was a lasting impression.
Tania – Read or go to the pub.
Strongan/Gabby – Start off with a pint at the pub, keep drinking pints until world becomes fuzzy, say things you don’t mean, have a curry, pass out next to your other half. Unless she makes you sleep on the sofa because you forgot you were taking her to the cinema.
Emma D – It’s a good patten for holding magic. I’m happy to call it Maori if you like.
Athena – A ghost with a very bad temper.
Valerie – I have a head in a jar. I’m told that’s surprising. Though I don’t know why, because if you know me, you know I’m exactly the type of bloke to keep a head in a jar…
Cate Masters – That’s an excellent thought.
Lisa Richards – I think I already answered this one, luv, but honestly…I’m quite flexible. Life is easier when you let women boss you about. Much easier.
Oh dear, poor Jack. You don’t understood the essence of the Beatles..it was the ultimate pick-up music for its time..and then George discovered the sitar and John discovered Yoko, and they decided to save the world instead of helping guys score. Of course, then came along Barry White, the real master of ‘getting the girl in the mood’ music. As one of the afore-mentioned girls…err, nevermind.
I am in late it seems, but better late than ever
I think I haevn’t seen it around.

I think the post above made some interesting points, on a related side note I found a used version of The Norton Anthology of English Literature which is directly related to this topic for less than the bookstores at http://www.belabooks.com/books/9780393927191.htm
