Please, call me Rose.
Well, Rose, Wicked Ink has been a fixture in the Gaslamp district for quite a while—
Oh, my, yes! As the sign outside our storefront proclaims, we’ve been layering tattoos on the ink-inclined denizens of this fine city since 1904.
Which explains the costume.
Costume? (Rose smoothes the skirt of her Victorian-era gown.)
Umm. Never mind. So, Rose, according to a Harris Poll that was conducted in the fall of 2012, women in American are more likely to have tattoos then men. The woman who just left, what kind of a tattoo did she get?
Emma? She’s not a customer. She’s an FBI Agent. And a Siren.
You know, Ulysses wrote about them. Although I hear the picture he painted was far from accurate he had a falling out with one of Emma’s sisters. They’re all stuck here now. (Rose leans forward and lowers her voice.) Zeus banished them here and Demeter cursed them for failing to protect Persephone and allowing Hades to drag her to the underworld.
And she’s an FBI Agent?
Oh yes, but the FBI doesn’t know about her other nature any more than they know that her partner, Zack is a Werewolf. By day he works with Emma to solve missing persons cases for the FBI. By the light of the full moon he runs naked through the woods. (Rose smiles, giving the reporter his first glimpse of fang.) Now, that’s a sight to behold.
Comic-Con’s over, right?
It was in July.
Not for a couple weeks. Nope, I’m an actual vampire princess—eldest child of the Sovereign of the Western Region, Kallistos Kouros. But you won’t remember any of that.
(Rose shakes her head, then leans forward fixing her gaze on the reporter.) No, you’ll just remember coming in here to ask for directions. You aren’t really interested in doing a story on Wicked Ink. You’re looking for the location of Madame Cora’s Golden Poppy Brothel. It’s just a couple floors above Wyatt Earps Oyster Bar. You’re doing a story about the days when the Gaslamp District was known as the Stingaree—full of saloons, opium dens, and ladies of ill repute. It’s just about four blocks north. You can’t miss it.
Thank you Miss….
Just call me Rose.
And you won’t want to miss Cursed,
Book 1 in S.J. Harper’s Fallen Siren Series!
S.J. Harper is the pen name for the writing team of Samantha Sommersby and Jeanne C. Stein, two friends who met at Comic-Con in San Diego and quickly bonded over a mutual love of good wine, edgy urban fantasy, and everything Joss Whedon.
Samantha Sommersby left what she used to call her “real life” day job in the psychiatric field to pursue writing full-time in 2007. She is the author of more than ten novels and novellas including the critically acclaimed Forbidden series. She currently lives with her husband and cocker spaniel, Buck, in a century old Southern
California Craftsman. Sam happily spends her days immersed in a world where vampires, werewolves, and demons are real, myths and legends are revered, magic
is possible, and love still conquers all.
Jeanne Stein is the national bestselling author of The Anna Strong Vampire Chronicles. She also has numerous short story credits, including most recently the novella, Blood Debt, from the New York Times bestselling anthology, Hexed. Her series has been picked up in three foreign countries and her short stories
published in collections here in the US and the UK. She lives in Denver, CO where she finds gardening a challenge more daunting than navigating the world of mythical creatures.
