Slade Aesus is a government agent working for NOA, the National Otherkind Administration–an agent that only the highest levels of clearance even know about. He also happens to be a demon who likes working alone. On his latest mission he crosses paths with a dark elf named Annwyn who gets in his way and needs a little help out of a touchy situation. Even though he knows it is stupid, he helps her out and in the process ends up bringing her more fully into his dangerous world.
Slade brings in Xian to help them. Annwyn heals Xian when injured, but clues Slade in that her magic seems a little off. Xian is a Kerkorian Vampire. Kerkorians are more powerful and have mind-control powers due to drinking demon blood. Vampires have preyed upon the demons so long that the demons have fled earth back to their homeworld, Tykol.
Tykol is falling fast due to the blight, a creeping sickness killing off the land in small degrees. It has almost reached the demon cities and demoralized the demons. This has created a faction who call themselves the Dysus. They believe in The Dreamer who will lead them out of the situation they now find themselves in, and lead to a better world. Gylbren and Khallie are son and daughter to the ruler of Tykol. They end up finding themselves on differing sides of the Dysus though both are trying to help their people.
Back on earth, Slade finds out his cousin, Amber, has been kidnapped. Amber is important to the demons because her father, Talus, was a Dysus, and he searched for a way to help the demons and thought the answer was in her blood. Slade is also Amber’s Ry’lan, which means protector. Slade talks his higher-ups into letting Annwyn become his partner in the search for Amber. Annwyn has her own secrets, though, which soon could pull her away from Slade.
Dysus Dreamer is a great read. It is action-packed and full of memorable characters. J.A. Garland gives enough information that I know what happened in book one without having read it, so that book two makes sense. This book has mystery, two different worlds, vampires, elves, werewolves, magic and demons. There is something for everyone in this book. I am definitely getting book one so I can find out more about these awesome characters.
