Resurrecting Harry: Master Escape Artist Cheats Death

Back in the time Harry Houdini lived, there were numerous headlines about him cheating death. When you first saw that title here, you may have even thought about it in a less than literal way. Maybe you thought this would be a book about the life and times of Harry. Instead, it’s a “what if” scenario
that supposes a world where the “greatest escape artist who ever lived” bargains his way out of the afterworld and back into a brand, new younger body.

The celestial being that enters the wager with Harry turned Erich is sour on romantic love – the one thing that Harry refuses to give up on. If he trusts nothing else it’s that Bess will recognize his soul, no matter the package it’s wrapped in. He doesn’t expect to find what grief and bitterness has turned his
Bess into.

Harry and Bess’s second chance at love would not have been able to happen, without Jaden’s interference. I’d love for you to comment below about your thoughts on “angels among us.” Have you ever felt divine intervention in your life?

Resurrecting Harry

“Can the greatest escape artist ever known break the grim reaper’s chains to save the only
woman he’s ever loved?

In order to save Bess from self-destruction, Harry Houdini puts his afterlife on the line by
entering a wager with purgatory’s keeper. He gives Harry a younger face and body, and a new
name: Erich Welch.

Bess clings to his promise to deliver a coded message from beyond the grave, determined to
provide the bridge for him to cross, even if that means befriending her husband’s sworn enemy.

Erich needs to help Bess over her loss and put her on the road to healing, but will any good come
from resurrecting Harry?”

Author Bio:

Constance Phillips lives in Ohio with her husband, two ready-to-leave-the-nest children, and four canine kids. Her perfect fantasy vacation would involve hunting Dracula across Europe with her daughter, who also digs that kind of stuff. When she’s not writing about fairies, shifters, vamps, and guardian angels, she’s working side-by-side with her husband in their hardwood flooring business.

Constance is actively involved in her local Romance Writers of America chapter (MVRWA) and the Southeast Michigan chapter of the United States Pony Club. When not writing or enjoying the outdoors, she loves reality television or can be found at a Rick Springfield concert (just lookfor the pink Converse high tops).

  1. Minna P says:

Aside from Houdini, who is your favorite magician, real or fictional?

  2. Michelle Bledsoe says:

This is a cool idea for a story. I always wondered about Houdini. I like where you have gone with the story.

  3. Robert L. Stubbs Jr. says:

I’ve felt Divine Intervention in my life personally. I like the concept of this book. How did it come to be the story?

    • Thanks for the question, Robert. I wanted to take the idea of Bess trying to contact Harry via seances and give it a little twist. Have him really escape death. In order to do that, I felt we needed a little help from a heavenly creature.

  4. Shannon Blue Christensen says:

    Congratulations on your novel!

  5. CStein says:

Congratulations on your second novel! Do you see a sequel or series of books with similar subject manner to that of Resurrecting Harry?

  6. Susana Ellis says:

Congrats, Connie! I bought Harry a couple of days ago when it first appeared and am looking forward to reading it!

  7. Maria S says:

WOW! This book sounds very different and interesting!

What book(s)are due out in the next month or two are you most looking forward to?

    • Thanks Maria. Two of my fellow Crescent Moon Press Authors have awesome books coming out this month too. Today, Jody A. Kessler’s Death Lies Between us. And on the 15th Shawna Romkey’s Speak of the Devil comes out. Both are great Angel stories.

  8. Thanks Maria. Two of my fellow Crescent Moon Press Authors have awesome books coming out this month too. Today, Jody A. Kessler’s Death Lies Between us. And on the 15th Shawna Romkey’s Speak of the Devil comes out. Both are great Angel stories.

  9. Lesley D says:

I’ve definitely felt divine intervention! Sometimes things work out too perfectly to be a coincidence :)

So what’s your favorite scene in Resurrecting Harry?

    • Thanks, Lesley. I don’t want to give away too much since today it is just out, but I will say it a scene between Erich and Bess that happens in the garden shed about a 1/3 of the way through the book. Bess is upset, and Erich stands up to her. It has a lot of sexual tension. :-)

  10. Bonnie says:

Congratulations on your new book! It sounds very interesting. Who are some of your favorite paranormal authors? What are you reading now?

  11. Loni Lynne says:

    I love ‘what if’ stories!!
Can I go with you and daughter tracking down vampires? Only the sexy ones though, not the Nosferatu. :)

    All the best to you!

    • Thanks, Loni. Asking those what if’s is how most of my stories get off the ground. Tracking vampires came from my daughter and I watching those reality shows on cable television, the ones where they people to mine for gold or hunt for Bigfoot. We’ve decided we should pitch a show idea to a network where we get to go all over the world tracking down real vamps. We think we should start in the Caribbean…and then move to Europe.

  12. Viki S. says:

Sounds good. If not for guardian angels or such I would be dead several times over. So I really believe in them and love reading books where they are featured. When did you become interested in them?

    Thank you.

    • Hi Viki, much like you, I’ve felt their presence in my life. I hadn’t really thought about incorporating them into my writing until I started messing around with the idea for this story.

If Harry was going to truly escape death, I figured he was going to need the helping hand of someone on the other side.

  13. Shawna says:

Hi I’m Shawna in Canada. I had the privilege of reading an advanced copy of this. It’s wonderful! I highly recommend it!

  14. Dina s says:

hi Constance, I do believe that there are angels amomg us for personal reasons :)

  15. Alysha says:

I love the concept behind this book. It should be a really interesting read. I’m generally more of a pure fantasy fan, but I’m looking forward to it!

I’m going to have to agree with Lesley, sometimes things work out too perfectly to be coincidence. I’ve certainly seen some well placed accidents have a huge beneficial impact: My father’s cancer wouldn’t have been discovered nearly as quickly if not for a “lucky” accident playing baseball.

What kind of influence (if any) have you felt had to be because of angels among us?

    • Thank you, Alysha, for sharing your story. I’ve seen similar situations in my life to yours. My mother-in-law had cancer discovered early because of other symptoms. But they’ve also been as simple as something turning my head at the perfect time to catch my child from falling. Or an inescapable feeling in my gut I should go somewhere, and then run into someone or having something serendipitous happening,

  16. What is your favorite thing about the writing experience and why?

    • The most fun part of writing for me is the first draft. I’m not much of a plotter, so I sit at the keyboard, the story starts spinning and just floating through my fingers to the page.

  17. YOU are a paranormal character, what is your super power?

  18. Rue Allyn says:

Constance, what a terrific book. Can’t wait to get my copy. As for angels, they are definitely among us (many of them are authors :) ). I experience miracles (large or small) daily and can only explain some events by the presence of holy intervention in our lives. Thank you so much for writing this truly inspirational story.

  19. Thanks, Rue, I hope you enjoy the story. I have to agree about Angels, I see their actions everyday.

  20. Mary Preston says:

    Hi,

which country tops your travel wish list?

  21. Gabrielle says:

What an interesting idea for a book. Do you read and enjoy the same genre that you write in?

  22. Lois M. says:

Hi! :) Any chance you’d want to get your day job into a story sometime? And I agree with some others that mentioned it, using Houdini, definitely an interesting and different twist! :)

    Lois

  23. Bethany C. says:

I noticed in your bio you write about faeries and I love reading about the fae folk. Can you tell me a little about your faeries, and whether they are in a book you’ve already had published?

  24. Susan S. says:

    Congrats on your new release.

  25. bn100 says:

What’s the inspiration for the cover?

  26. Stacey A Smith says:

What started you think about writing this book?

    • I was thinking about the seances that Bess Houdini conducted and that Harry had talked about proving life after death (Or disproving it) through that communication, and I wanted to do a spin on it. I also wanted to do a story that focused on a love that could surpass death…and still have a happy ever after. Thanks for the question.

  27. Dovile P. says:

What was your favorite childhood book?

    • When I first started reading I use to love the Encyclopedia Brown books, and I think those early books were such an influence that I include small mysteries in a lot of the books I write.

In my teenage years, I started reading romances and found paranormal romance in my early twenties.

  28. Dovile P. says:

Have you ever written fan fiction? For what fandom?

  29. I’ve read some fan fiction. but haven’t written any.

  30. Koren C says:

    Hi Constance,

This book looks great. I look forward to reading it.

Do you generally set one large or many small goals?

    • Koren, That’s an awesome question. I set my goals in such a way that I set a bigger long term goal, and then break it down in the steps (smaller goals) that I need to take to make them.

  31. Koren C says:

What do you do to reward yourself when you reach your goals?

  32. Koren C says:

Do you keep track of random plot bunnies as they pop up, or do you let them run free and grow until you need them?

    • Koren, when I’m working on a project, I get very focused. I wish I could work on multiple projects at once. So, when those random plot bunnies come up, I write them down in a notebook, so I can revisit them later.

  33. Cheryl M says:

Do you have a favourite genre to read?

  34. Trix says:

Is there a genre you’d like to attempt writing in that you haven’t yet?

  35. Trix says:

Also, have you ever read any of Penn Jillette’s fiction? (He has some short stories like “invisible Thread,” and the book SOCK…)

  36. Raluca P. says:

Hello, Constance! What was your biggest childhood dream? :)

  37. Carol M. says:

    Hi, Constance. Welcome to BBB!

What kinds of things do you enjoy doing for relaxation?

  38. Chris J. says:

Who or what do you like to read when your not writing?

  39. Joani S says:

Hi there! What are your thoughts on audiobooks? Listen to any? This does sound very interesting and I see good reviews for it. I will def be checking it out! :)

  40. Raonaid Luckwell says:

If you could live in any literary world (including your own) which one would you choose)… In that world and you can change places with any character of that world who’d you choose.

    • Thanks for the great question, Raonaid, as much as I love my Fairyproof world, The Fairy realm is very Patriarchal, so I don’t think I’d be buying a ticket there anytime too soon. I think the 20s (When Resurrecting Harry) is set was a less complicated time, but also very hard. I’d probably choose that though. See how long I could go before I really missed computers.
