Immortally Embraced by Angie FoxImmortally Embraced , book two in the exciting and entertaining Monster MASH series, finds Petra Robichaud, doctor for the army of the New Gods in their perpetual war with the Old Gods, ministering to a pregnant Medusa. Nevertheless, Petra takes her duties while stationed in limbo in stride, until she receives the news that her formally-immortal/now human lover, Galen, has been called back to the front. Aside from the fact that the orders make no sense, given that the two sides are currently having a cease-fire, the bigger shock for Petra comes in the form of Galen stating that they must break up. Saying that he cannot tell her the mission he has been assigned, Galen abruptly departs, leaving Petra both angry and dumbfounded.

Later that evening, after spending time with Marius, her vampire roommate, and checking in on the newest prophecy delivered by the oracles on PNN (Paranormal News Network), Petra receives a note asking her to meet someone. Assuming the note must be from Galen, Petra rushes out the appointed spot only to come upon someone from her past she has long thought dead, who seeks to enlist her aid in conferring with the ghost of a murdered scientist in the enemy camp. Despite her shock, Petra understands the importance of the dangerous undertaking proposed, as it seems the Old Gods are working hard on a weapon of mass destruction that will endanger everyone.

Once again Fox pulls off a story that manages to incorporate romance and humor against the backdrop of a paranormal war zone — one that reflects the true issues and concerns faced by soldiers and medical personnel in reality. To her credit, the author’s deft use of humor never detracts from the underlying seriousness of the concerns her characters face on a daily basis, but rather adds to the enjoyment of the narrative in every instance. The reader feels as though they know the quirky secondary players, human and paranormal alike, and easily becomes attached to them.

The reappearance of Marc creates difficulties not only for Petra, but in addition raises questions about how book three will deal with both the relationship between the two of them and the possible eventual return of Galen for the final installment, due August 2013. This fun and thought-provoking series should please urban fantasy and paranormal romance readers alike with its fast-paced, suspenseful treatment of an original idea.
