Tainted by Lynn Rush

Durk was running from the trauma of his soul mate, Jessica’s, death…literally running from the pain and from his Guardian responsibilities. The last thing he remembered was seeing Jess upon a concrete altar, in Flowing Brook, Colorado, and now he is half-naked, riding in a car with a woman who picked him up twelve miles outside of Fillmore, Arizona. Durk’s Guardian instinct had gone silent, leaving him stranded and alone, unable to call for help from the others.

Turning his back on his Guardian heritage was not an easy thing for Durk, but his sense of betrayal at Jessica’s death was strong and deep, causing him to cut ties with everyone. His protective instinct was still strong, and he found himself fighting more demons than he would have believed one little town could hold. Can Durk manage to go rogue and ignore his training and his strong sense of duty, or will he return to the group and avenge Jessica’s death?

This fast-paced, exciting story was a lot of fun to read. The fight scenes are well described, and it is easy to imagine Durk wielding a dagger or long sword to cut off the demons’ heads. Durk’s confusion and sense of isolation clearly comes through, and it captured my attention, making me wonder if there was any resolution for his conflicted and tormented soul. Durk’s strength and courage wins out, however, and he manages to rejoin the Guardians in what becomes the battle of a lifetime.
