When Nika left her home in California to run a pub in England with her boyfriend, David, she never thought she’d be stuck running it on her own. But when he runs off with another woman, she finds herself doing just that—and liking it, for the most part. Enter the mysterious Garrick. Tall, handsome, and incredibly irresistible. Everything Nika just is not ready for… or is she? There’s only one way to find out, and he’s determined to change her mind, no matter the cost.
Nika is both feisty and damaged. David’s running off left her hurting and reluctant to trust a man—any man—ever again. However, she refuses to let his betrayal run her life. I was impressed with the way she was determined to stick with the pub, even though it had been his idea and their responsibility to share. It gave her focus and kept her from dwelling too much on what a jerk he’d been to her. I loved the way she was both attracted to and yet still resistant to Garrick’s advances. It showed that she was still able to want someone in her life, even if she wasn’t quite ready to take that step forward. For me, Nika was both a well-balanced and likable character, a perfect mate for Garrick.
Garrick is one of the more entertaining characters I’ve come across in a while. He knows from the beginning that Nika is the one for him. And no matter how hard she fights it, he keeps putting himself out there for her. Aside from his reluctance to share his biggest secret with her, he does anything and everything she asks in order to just spend some time with her. He’s a dedicated and loving mate, just the kind of man she needs most right now.
