Unknown is the second book in author Rachel Caine’s Outcast series which is a spin-off of her Weather Warden series. The book starts right where Undone left off, with the former Djinn Cassiel working with Weather Warden Luis Rocha to track down the rogue Djinn Pearl who is behind all the kidnapped Warden children. Pearl captured Luis’s niece Ibby and, with Cassiel’s help, must try and rescue these kids before the insane Djinn can use them in her diabolical plans.

The pair are pretty much on their own as most of the Weather Wardens are dealing with the events that are happening in the Weather Warden series. Cassiel is learning more and more how to be human, while trying to decide whether to follow through with what the Djinn want of her to regain her full powers back. The Djinn want Cassiel to destroy all of humanity which would stop Pearl from gaining the power she needs to destroy all the Djinn. This book is an edge of your seat thriller that happens to be set in an urban fantasy world.

The Weather Warden series is my second favorite series, and Rachel has done an amazing job creating new characters to inhabit a world she has been writing for eight books now. This book goes with book 8 in the Weather Warden series and book 3 should take place after the ninth and final Weather Warden book. This book does stand on its own and you shouldn’t have to read her other series to enjoy Unkown. Rachel writes some of the best action scenes in urban fantasy. Every book she gives the reader a wonderful cast of characters that grow with each book. I highly recommend reading this series along with the Weather Warden series.
