Chosen by Sable Grace
Chosen is the third book in the Dark Breed series by Sable Grace. In this entry, Kyana, former Dark Breed and Order member with the stigma of being half-vampire/half-lychen, is now the new Goddess of the Hunt. Chosen as Artemis’ replacement, she is still learning her responsibilities and her powers. However, she does not have the time to settle into the new job. Chronos, the deposed God of Gods, is fighting to get his throne back, and to destroy his enemies, Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, and all the other gods and goddesses, along with humanity.
Kyana is wracked with guilt over changing her friend Haven into a Dark Breed in order to save her life. This act ruined Haven’s life by subjecting her to the disreputable life of a Dark Breed. Kyana’s guilt was worsened by the fact that Chronos possessed Haven and caused her to commit murder and wreak havoc. Now that Haven is in her right mind again, she join forces with Kyana and other to stop Chronos.
Kyana also struggles with her developing feelings for Ryker, son of Ares and Zeus’ chosen replacement. With a tormented history before she was turned, and trust issues, Kyana does not want to be in love with Ryker, and hates that he makes her feel emotionally vulnerable. But his unconditional love is melting away the locks on her heart. She will have to face her past and some powerful enemies, as Chronos’ bid to take over the world and usurp the Gods moves forward, with violence and death in his wake.
Chosen was by far the best book in the series. The promise that the original book showed and the hopes for a satisfying conclusion stirred with the second raised the bar pretty high. However, I was pleasantly surprised that I did enjoy the progression in the story. Some of the world-building and storytelling was still somewhat muddled, making some events feel confusing to me as I read. Nonetheless, the action and intense moments made for a readable, and fast-paced novel.
More importantly, Kyana grew to be a more sympathetic, likable character in Chosen. She has evolved into a less abrasive person, and insight into her painful past has helped me see her in a kinder light. I appreciated how Grace showed that bonds of friendship and loved ones have helped to heal the wounds that Kyana carries. She has started to do things because she felt emotionally ready to do them, instead of out of rebellion or duty. That was a pleasant change. I also liked that Ryker accepts Kyana as she is, and gives her his love without strings attached, a lesson she needed to learn about love.
With Chosen, I am able to see the potential and the appeal of the Dark Breed series. I will definitely look forward to future books in this series.
