Dragon's Moon (A Children of the Moon Novel) by Lucy MonroeReaders often ask if after 50 books, does it ever get “old” having a new release? And I always answer with a resounding, “NO!” LOL Every single book release if fraught with excitement, expectation and nerves for me. I love my characters and sharing them with readers is one of the most amazing things about being a published author.

But most authors will admit that some books are special. “Dragon’s Moon” is one of those books for me. The fourth in my Children of the Moon series, it’s a book that took a lot out of me to write. Those are, in my opinion, the best kind. :) If you’ve never read of one of my fantasy/paranormal books, “Dragon’s Moon” is an excellent place to start. You’ll get to meet characters from earlier stories, but also the first and only living dragon shifter among the Chrechte.

He’s the Prince of the Ean, a strong alpha hero who discovers he’s mated to the sister of a man he killed when he cast fire for the first time. It’s an emotional book, but I wouldn’t bother writing it if it wasn’t. It’s sexy because I like reading sexy. It’s filled with adventure and a rockin’ quest. What’s not to love? Hopefully nothing. :)

Writing it took more research than even I normally do. Not only did I add to my knowledge of Scottish life in the Middle Ages and the known history of the Picts for the story, but I had to really dig deeply into Dragonology, learning just how pervasive the mythology of the dragon is in global history. It’s not simply a matter of distinguishing between the Western and Eastern dragon myth, but the widely varied concepts of the dragon from both main cultural groups. In a word, it was fun! I love to research, almost as much as I love writing.

Reading the book, you’ll discover the aspect to dragons I found most fascinating as well as the juxtaposition of Eirik’s humanity with his beast, but I don’t mind admitting right now that probably my favorite dragon trait is the ability of my Ean prince to take flight with his mate riding on his back.

Author Bio:

USA Today bestseller and award winning Lucy Monroe’s love affair with books and reading began at age 4. She often climbed her mother’s book stacks to pull down the novels on the top shelves. When she was caught reading the Reader’s Digest Condensed Version of “The Godfather” while still in Kindergarten, those books got moved. Although she’s always loved mysteries and suspense, romance has been her passion since she kyped her first Presents from her oldest sister’s bedside table (again way too early).

She began writing after a conversation with God in the bathtub; as a homeschooling mom until her children were in middle school, the only place she could find any peace for many years was the bathtub. Her path to publication was not strewn with rose petals or even pavement!

Lucy wrote more than one million words of romantic fiction before selling her 13th manuscript to Harlequin Presents, nine years on from that fateful bathtub conversation.

  1. Lucy Monroe says:

I’m over the top excited about this books release! :) And I’m so looking forward to chatting with readers at our all day Cyber Launch Party. Thanks so much for having me, Rachel and Bitten by Books! :)

  2. BethRe says:

    the ability to fly

  3. BethRe says:

Lucy is there a genre of writing that you haven’t tried yet that you would like to?

  4. Raonaid Luckwell says:

What about you? What aspects of dragons fascinate you the most?

Can I say “everything”? Every aspect about the dragons fascinates me. Perhaps I have a dragon soul to feel such kinship with the mighty creatures or because I was born beneath their sign. Who knows.

    • Lucy Monroe says:

Raonaid…great to see you here! For me, I think it is their power. Dragon’s, to me, are the ultimate protectors and leaders.

I love that you were born under the dragon sign like my m-i-l. I told her this book was coming out this year just for her, since it’s the year of the dragon. :)

      • Raonaid Luckwell says:

        Bet she would love that!!

My sons know how much I like my dragon. One year for Christmas my hubby bought me a chinese dragon figurine he bought at a Chinese restaurant. So I am not strictly “Eastern” or “Western” but all types of dragons.

        • Lucy Monroe says:

I like that. :) Don’t you even find lumping Dragonology into those two broad camps constricting? When we think of the Western dragon, we often neglect to even consider those found in Native American beliefs and when speaking of the Eastern dragons, most authors limit themselves to popular Chinese and Japanese concepts, while dismissing the nuances found in the other surrounding cultures.

          • Raonaid Luckwell says:

Yes, very! Lumping them in two categories does dragons no justice! Though it is fascinating that each race has their own belief where dragons are concerned.

Couple years back (can’t remember the exact date) there was a tv movie about dragons. Mostly about did they exist or had they existed. It was quite neat.

          • Lucy Monroe says:

I would love to have seen that…if you remember the title, please share it. :)

          • Raonaid Luckwell says:

I will try to remember! I want to say it was on the Discovery channel… Urgh really frustrating not remembering it. I remember seeing it, and they had a theory that dragons did exist once upon a time along with the dinosaurs but died out. It was quite neat to watch.

          • Lucy Monroe says:

It sounds fab. I love video research too…sometimes you *gasp* want a break from reading nonfiction. LOL

  5. Raonaid Luckwell says:

Question – What do you think would be hardest, or most appreciated about the dragon nature by the human who shared it?

Wow, now that question is hard to answer, truly. People would probably like the fact that most other creatures, animals and people, alike would not pick a fight with a dragon. Bulk, sight, teeth, horns, and tail screams “leave me alone”

    • Lucy Monroe says:

That’s a question that Eirik has to face in “Dragon’s Moon” and while I don’t want to give away any spoilers, I’ll say it’s a tough one for him that Ciara – the last person he would expect to do so – eventually has to help him come to terms with.

      • Raonaid Luckwell says:

In my works of progress the dragons live in this alternate universe. They had to flee earth so not to become extinct. A band of elves nurtured them. So they really don’t have to worry about that. They accept the dragon’s size and nature.

  6. Lori P. says:

    Looking forward to reading :)

  7. Raonaid Luckwell says:

If you had the silver-tongue ability what book would you attempt to read. who/what/etc would you read out?

  8. Raonaid Luckwell says:

Since we are talking about dragons… If you were a dragon what you be your color. How would you look? (Spade tail, spiked tail, lotsof horns, etc)

    • Lucy Monroe says:

My dragon would be amber orange. She would be sleek, but powerful with wings that reflect the sunlight and shimmer under the moon. :)

      • Lucy Monroe says:

What about you? Anyone else want to join in? :)

        • Raonaid Luckwell says:

Would keep with the Fire dragon sign I was born into… beautiful scarlet and ruby red scales.. Purple eyes (purpholic) with the right about of horns to balance the face and I would want my tail to taper off like a snake’s. Underbelly I can see a lighter red, maybe a light rust-red.

  9. Raonaid Luckwell says:

If you could live in any movie or literary world which would you choose and why? What would be your role?

    • Lucy Monroe says:

I wouldn’t. I love my life and I already get to occupy my favorite worlds for hours a day while writing my books. ;-)

      • Raonaid Luckwell says:

Would love to live in Valdemar – Mercedes Lackey’s world just to see the shin’a'in warriors, the hawk brothers and see the heralds and companions. Not to mention the gryphons.

Any world where the dragons were friends. Just to see their majesty…

        • Lucy Monroe says:

I am hoping more readers answer some of your questions…are you finding the replies that others are giving as fascinating as I am? Hugs! Oh, and I haven’t ready Mercedes L., but I’ve heard *wonderful* things about her. Maybe I need to change that? :)

  10. Lucy Monroe says:

I’d love to see other readers chime in on these questions! :)

  11. Cheryl M says:

    I enjoy your books!

  12. Viki S. says:

I like how fragile they look and yet they are SO strong.

  13. Ginger Robertson says:

    Hi Lucy,
I can tell you are very excited with release tomorrow of “Dragon’s Moon” and I’m so excited for you. Many good wishes for a huge sale and may the partying begin shortly!!!.

  14. Rae M. says:

What about you? What aspects of dragons fascinate you the most?

Ooh, that’s hard to describe, because I do love dragons! I think it’s because, as a shifter, it’s a creature that we don’t see everyday. Not that I go around seeing wolves a big cats shift into hot men in my back yard (I wish)! But it’s an animal that’s supposed to be mythological. It’s somethingg that doesn’t exist in our minds as real. So it just adds that extra bit of fantasy to the story.

What do you think would be hardest, or most appreciated about the dragon nature by the human who shared it?

It’s got to be the ability to fly! How awesome would that ability be!

    • Lucy Monroe says:

Rae…that’s a great point. It’s like Alyssa Day’s Atlantis stories…there’s that extra bit of fantasy to them because they are set in a place we mostly regard as myth. :)

  15. What aspects of dragons fascinate you the most? that with their large size they still tend to be very quick and nimble.

  16. Rae M. says:

Congrats on the newest release! And along those lines, I’m wondering, do you celebrate the same way each time? A sort of book release ritual or do you do something different each time?

And ou of curiosity, do you remember what you did after your very first book release?

    Thanks!

    • Lucy Monroe says:

Rae…we usually go out to dinner (which is what we did for the first release, back in the days when eating out was a major event for us), but the family has grown to include spouses and grandchildren, so it’s a rowdy bunch at the table nowadays. :) I also like to do a bookstore sighting when my agoraphobia isn’t acting up too much. :)

  17. What do you think would be hardest, or most appreciated about the dragon nature by the human who shared it?
    OMG! The ability to fly

  18. Would you rather be a giant hamster or a tiny rhino?

  19. What is your guilty pleasure?

  20. Any plans for a YA series in your future?

  21. Angela Perry says:

I think the hardest trait in a dragon for a human partner would be the jealousy of a dragon. Their possessiveness can be very extreme and that might cause difficulty with human partner. But, on the other hand, this can be a desirable aspect because who doesn’t like a partner who shows how much you are cherished and desired by them alone.

    • Lucy Monroe says:

Angela…there is something very attractive about healthy possessiveness, isn’t there? :) I know some would say there is no such thing, but I don’t agree. I’m very protective of my marriage and my husband is the same. We love and trust deeply, but there is no question we both expect not to have to doubt our place with each other. :)

  22. Just wanted to come back and say how much I’ve enjoyed your books over the years. I don’t think there was ever a time that I’ve not had some of your books on my bookshelf to read. I’ve read Harlequins for decades and was surprised to see that yours had only been around 10+ years. Wow, you have put out an enormous amount in that short time! I’ve not started this series but have added it to my wishlist as I love paranormals too. I had always associated your name more with the royals/dark sexy romances in Harlequins which I cut my teeth on so I’m really looking forward to your sexy paranormals.

  23. sue brandes says:

What aspects of dragons fascinate you the most?
They are so mysterious, strong, they can fly and breathe fire.

  24. Angela Perry says:

I love your cover. How much input do you have in the cover, and do you ever worry that people will be put off my ‘half dressed man’ thinking it is a bodice ripper rather than fantasy/paranormal?

    • Lucy Monroe says:

Thanks, Angela! And what a great question…honestly, I never even considered that a shirtless man in a kilt would put readers off a book. But then if it does, they probably don’t like sex in their books either and I do…so you know, that’s what I write. :)

  25. Jennifer Morrell says:

    Hi,
Wow, great giveaway! That first question, about the best thing having a dragon around, for me, would be that they are ancient, wise, have a vast amount of knowledge and would be fiercely loyal! Can you imagine the sense of security and warm specialness a person would feel?
    Jenn
Does this count as my RSVP?

  26. Debby Creager says:

i so love your books! every time a new one comes out,I think that is the best one yet!LOL

  27. Joani S says:

Hi there! I can’t believe that I haven’t read any of your books yet,but I will def change that! I put this series in my wish list at amazon. Did you mention how many books would be out for this one? I saw you have one book in audio format. Do you listen to audiobooks? Would you like to see more of yours available in audio?

    • Lucy Monroe says:

Hi, Joani. :) I hope you enjoy the books. Really, really. :) I don’t have a set number for the series because new stories keep popping into my head. :) I love audio books and would be REALLY happy if more of my books came out that way, but it just hasn’t happened yet. :)

  28. Joani S says:

As for answering your question, the aspects that draw me to dragons are their ability to fly, for starters. Sometimes they are portayed with such tiny little wings, and the body is so massive, the only way they could lift that bulk off the ground is by magic I think. I’ve read in some books that the dragon is magic itself, I totally believe it.

  29. Joani S says:

As for the other question, that’s a little harder. I would think the fire breathing might be a little hard to appreciate. I read some books by Michelle Sagara, and she has a dragon in hrs who walks in human form but can explode instantly to his dragon. But while in human form, sometimes he can crack pavement just walking because he still retains that “mass”, its just not in this form. So I think a dragon might have to always be careful of his strength. But I would love the flying!!

  30. Bethany C. says:

Hi, I was wondering if you could give a brief description of what Eirik looks like (in your head) when he’s in dragon form?

    • Lucy Monroe says:

You bet, Bethany. :) He’s huge and majestic, more in the Western tradition in his large body and wingspan. Dark red with powerful haunches and claws on his forepaws. When he flies, it would look the same as a small plane to us. :)

  31. Pat Freely says:

Dragons have always been with me. I have read all Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey books. I learned to read by reading these.
The best thing about being a dragon is the power to transform. In my dreams when I young, I was this magical flying creature with many flashing colours.
I guess I have always been a little in love with these magnificent beings.

  32. Miranda W says:

The aspects of dragons that fascinate me the most are the raw power, and the size.

  33. Miranda W says:

I think the hardest thing would be reining in that power and the best thing would be knowing you had it there if you needed it.

  34. Miranda W says:

What music do you listen to when you write?

  35. Miranda W says:

Do you dress and “go to work” or wear whatever is comfy and clean?

  36. Miranda W says:

How do keep track on your world building?

    • Lucy Monroe says:

I keep a very comprehensive notebook with everything (and I do mean *everything*) in it. :) I’m really organized about stuff like that, though I write the actual story by the seat of my pants, my research, etc. is all laid out in order. :)

  37. Tina B says:

The aspects of dragons that fascinate me are the fact that they can fly, they are enormous, some breath fire and I think they are fierce. :)

  38. Tina B says:

Congrats on your new release, Lucy! It sounds like a wonderful book and series!
    :)

  39. Donna S says:

Congrats on the new release! This is a new series that I am now really looking forward to.

  40. Phoenix Carvelli says:

I love that dragons can fly! Lucky creatures! :)

  41. Debbie Curto says:

Would love to win I haven’t read amy of these books and it would give me a chance!

  42. Dovile P. says:

I’m always intrigued about how dragons are these big and dangerous creatures, but in most books they’re either portrayed extinct or endangered, and the reasons for this.

  43. Dovile P. says:

The hardest probably would be dragons being so large and dangerous, and people so tiny and fragile compared to them to take some notice of those puny creatures.

  44. Dovile P. says:

What is your favorite childhood book/series?

  45. Dovile P. says:

Have you ever written fan fiction? For what series?

  46. Dovile P. says:

If your mind were a house, how would it look like inside? :)

  47. Angela Perry says:

The aspect I love about dragons is with the male dragons, in that they ooze masculinity, testosterone, attractiveness. All the male dragons I have read have this innate sexuality that just makes you want to jump them! :)

  48. Stacey A Smith says:

I love how big and Colorful they are.and that they fly does not hurt .

  49. Julie T says:

What aspect fascinates me most: the ability to fly! Of course.:)

  50. BethRe says:

Another cool thing about dragons they appear in almost all cultures. Pretty cool

  51. Lucy Monroe says:

Thank you to everyone who came to my Cyber Launch and talked dragons with me! Mega hugs and happy reading!
