About Thirteen:
“A war is brewing—the first battle has been waged and Savannah Levine is left standing, albeit battered and bruised. She has rescued her half brother from supernatural medical testing, but he’s fighting to stay alive. The Supernatural Liberation Movement took him hostage, and they have a plan to expose the supernatural world to the unknowing.

Savannah has called upon her inner energy to summon spells with frightening strength, a strength she never knew she had, as she fights to keep her world from shattering. But it’s more than a matter of supernaturals against one another—both heaven and hell have entered the war; hellhounds, genetically modified werewolves, and all forces of good and evil have joined the fray.

Uniting Savannah with Adam, Paige, Lucas, Jaime, Hope, and other lost-but-notforgotten characters in one epic battle, for a grand series finale.”

Author Bio:

I’ve been telling stories since before I could write. My earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, mine would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to my teachers’ dismay. All efforts to make me produce “normal” stories failed. Today, I continue to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in my basement writing dungeon.

  1. Jessica says:

This question has literally been killing me. I want to move forward with the series (I even own the next 4-5 of them but have only read Bitten) but I don’t know when to read ‘Men of the Otherworld’. Do you read it before Stolen or after Stolen? I get different opinions on both. Thanks so much! I really really want to read these books, but have anxiety over reading them in the wrong order and spoiling things for myself!!

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

There’s no “right” place to read it, but the last story does contain spoilers for No Humans Involved. If you already have the book, go ahead and read Infusion, Savage & Ascension (they’re prequels to Bitten) but stop before the last story :) If you don’t have the book, I’d wait and read them all after No Humans Involved. Nothing in any of those stories is necessary for understanding any other book in the series.

      • Jessica says:

I do have it, but I think I will hold of until after No Humans Involved, as I have Stolen, Dime Store Magic, and Industrial Magic already as well. Thanks for getting that cleared up for me! FINALLY I feel like I can move forward (I think I have owned these books for about 2 years…)

    • Kim says:

Read it after book 7: No Humans Involved. Men of the Otherworld has a new story at the end that will spoil book 7 if you read it first. It’s about Jeremy.

  2. Heather says:

Why did you choose an earring for the accessory for the character to wear on the book on the Darkness Rising trilogy? Also, I know this is really nosy, but why haven’t you come to British Columbia for a book signing? That would be ss totally appropriate!

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

The publishers do the cover art, not me :) As for no BC visits, I had 4 signings on Van Isle last May and a signing in Vancouver last September.

      • Heather says:

I can’t believe I missed you! Though I wouldn’t have really known who you are since I just started reading your books this summer

  3. Joyce Peart says:

Kelley – no question, just congratulations on the upcoming new series. I say it is about time. I met you at Calgary at When Words Collide and you did an amazing job about keeping the news under lock and key until the announcement this past weekend. Oh, I guess I do have one question – any word on who will play Elena and Clay? Or is that a secret?

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

I met with the exec producer (JB Sugar) this weekend and got a better idea of the schedule. Production starts in the spring, meaning casting will begin in the new year. Right now, they’re working on getting a few more scripts ready, doing more R&D on the wolf SFX and moving their office from Vancouver to Toronto for production. So it’ll be very quiet on the news front until 2013, but they’re very good about keeping me in the loop as things develop and I’ll be passing on whatever I can.

  4. Nefertari says:

13 is really an epic end for an epic serie. I’m so sad it is the last one. But now that it’s released can you talk a little about the new serie Omens & Shadows ?

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

I can. The first book is done (pending final tweaks and copyedits) and I’m working on the second.

We’re fussing a bit with the initial title (Cainsville) and series title (Omens & Shadows) right now. Both may change. I’m lobbying to keep Cainsville for the series title instead, as this “small town with a secret” plays a huge role in all the books.

The first book is about a privileged young woman who discovers she’s adopted…and the daughter of convicted serial killers. Under the media frenzy that ensues, she flees and starts over in a strange little town outside Chicago. She tries to make a life there while being pulled into investigating her parents’ alleged crimes. There are paranormal elements, but not typical urban fantasy ones–it has things like omens, second sight and Celtic folklore instead of vampires, werewolves and demons.

  5. Jackie U says:

I love the entire Otherworld series, but my heart will always hold Haunted and its main character, Eve, closest of all. How emotionally draining was it to write that novel? I ask because, as a mother, the choices Eve had to make would have killed me. Savannah is a lucky, lucky girl to have had such an amazing, caring mother!

As an aside, I’ve always been surprised Haunted wasn’t more popular. It’s not that people didn’t like it, but I rarely hear it mentioned when your series is discussed. It’s a shame, really. It may be one of the most emotionally-filling fiction novel I’ve ever read!

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

As a mother, Haunted was definitely difficult to write in parts. However, Eve is probably the most “different from me” of my characters, and it was through Savannah that we connected.

Haunted seems to be the most divisive of my books. I remember a few years ago, I was at a signing and two guys came up, one shortly after the other. Both were in their early twenties. Both outwardly similar. The first said “I like all your book, but my favourite was definitely Haunted.” The second said, “I love your books…but I didn’t really care for Haunted.” That’s what it seems to be like for that book. There’s no age or gender or any other obvious factor that would influence whether readers like/dislike it. If I was to speculate, I think it may be a reflection (in some cases) of whether they prefer fantasy or contemporary fiction, because it’s definitely my most fantasy-based book.

  6. Jessica S. says:

    Jessica S. from the USA

So, I still have to wonder, will there perhaps be a novella, instead of a book, with Cassandra as our narrator?

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

It’s always possible. I can’t say yes for sure, unless I had a clear plot for one, which I don’t…yet.

  7. Stacey says:

I have read just about everything of yours that I can get my hands on. All the the Otherworld series, the Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising (can’t wait for the next one), Nadia, and as many of the short stories and novella’s as I can. I absolutely love the way you create the entire world and make it so believable. I have just finished my writing my first novel and started the first steps in the editing process. What is the best advise you can give some one at this stage?

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

My advice would be to give it a thorough edit, then have others read it for feedback. You can start with family and friends, but after they’ve given you some basics, you’ll want people who are either fellow writers or big readers in the genre you’ve chosen. They’ll give you the best feedback. After you’ve applied what you agree with, give it another edit on your own and start the first steps toward publication, whichever publishing route you’ve chosen.

  8. Billie Jo says:

Hi! I am a HUGE fan and have read all the Otherworld series books! My question is in the book 13 one major incident happened with the wolves and another minor thing happened in the short story at the end (I don’t want to mention incase Simeon has not read it yet) will you be leaving writing another book to clear up what happens??? I am dying to know what happens!!
Okay, I’m going to be greedy and ask another question. Will you be involved with the writing of the episodes for the new series? I am super excited to watch it!

    Thank so much!!
    Billie Jo, ON

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

I’m planning to address those in a novella. For the TV show, I’ve seen the pilot and given feedback, which they were great about. I’ll continue to do that when they want it. I’ve made it clear that I’m happy to give that feedback, but this really is “their” show not “my” book.

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

I’ve made it clear that I’m happy to give that feedback, but that I don’t expect/need to see everything. This really is “their” show. It’s just based on my books.

  9. Heather says:

Even though I just started reading your books this summer, I became a big fan! I’ve only read the Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising (can’t wait for the next one!) But when The Rising comes out could you maybe… make another stop in Vancouver? I would love to meet you! Or at least see you. :)

  10. LisaM says:

Hi Kelley! I am burning through 13, but I admit, I am not reading as fast as usual. Probably because I don;t want this series to end. I don’t know how, but I somehow missed The Hunter and The Hunted. I guess i will have to order it now. At least I have that little “extra” to look forward to now. I don’t really have a question, but do want to congratulate you on the new series and to say thank you for all these years of reading pleasure you have brought me!

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

Thank you! I hope you’ll enjoy 13. I do plan to write more “extras” over the next few years, so there will be more to come. Just a stop (for now) to the novels ;)

  11. Koren C says:

I’ve had my copy of Thirteen since release day. I have all the books in the series lined up and ready to go, because when a new book a series comes out I like to start at the very begining.(a very good place to start…..Dang it now I am going to have this song stuck in my head) I know I will be very happy to read the new book and very sad that the series is done. I have so much love and respect for authors who know that it is the end. No matter how much the writer and readers may love the stories and characters it is time to wrap up their story and move on to something new.

Any more Nadia in the works?

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

Thank you for saying that. I know it’s not easy for readers to see a series end. It’s not easy for authors either, unless they’ve hit the point where they’re sick of their books and never want to revisit those characters again–and that’s exactly what I was trying to avoid. I want to close it while I’ll still be happy to revisit them later, yet I’m equally happy to try something new.

Yes, there’s a third Nadia coming late 2013. I’m done the first draft. Now it needs lots of editing!

  12. Daniela says:

Hi!! i just wanted to say that i am a big fan of your work … i loved the darkest power , is it true they are making a movie ???

p.s . when are you going to visit New York? i will really love to see you in person !
    thanxs

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

No movies plans for the Darkest Powers yet. Sorry! As for New York, I would love to come there for a signing, but I only ever seem to get there on business (it’s where my publishers are located). If they every ask/send me for an event, I’ll happily go!

  14. Rae M. says:

Hi! Firstly I have to say congrats on Thirteen! I love this series.I was at your Cincinnati appearance when Waking the Witch came out and I can’t believe Thirteen is already here now!

I’ve been re-reading the series and I’m wondering for you looking back at the beginning, are you surprised at where the series has ended up or is this about where you expected it to be?

And also, I love, love Nadia Stafford and can’t wait to see the third book! I’m also excited about Loki’s Wolves.

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

There are many parts of the series that ended up where I expected from the first few books (I can’t say which ones without giving spoilers :) ) There were also plenty of surprises, though. For one example, I never foresaw Karl becoming a romantic interest and I always expected Nick would be. Neither went as planned, just because of the way the series and characters developed.

You mentioned Loki’s Wolves. I just finished proofreading that today, so it is officially done! I expect ARCs in a month and will start giving them away as soon as I have them.

  15. I’ve only read the first three books in this series but do have the rest of them. I guess it’s time for a marathon reading session.

  16. Joani S says:

hi there! I see someone just asked (sort of) the question I was thinking of. I was wondering if there were any characters that you had changed your mind on now that the books were over. Looking back do you wish you had a chance to redo some books and have the characters do anything different, or are you satisfied with how everything has turned out? I have all the books, read them all but the last 3. I was sort of waiting to do a massive re-read, but I’m sort of dragging my heels, I love this world so much I don’t want it to end. Congrats to you and the epic books you have given us.

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

There are minor things I would have changed (like not naming 2 characters Karl and Carlos even if I couldn’t imagine they’d ever share scenes together because they probably would anyway LOL) In general though, it all went the way I envisioned and I was happy with the ending.

  17. Angel Hatfield says:

I just have to say how much I love the Underworld series. Elena and Clay are two of my absolute favorite characters of any series. My absolute favorite of yours was Men of the Underworld though. For some reason, I particularly liked reading from the guys’ perspectives and learning their beginnings after having already known about them.

    • Kelley Armstrong says:

Thanks! I really enjoyed writing the stories in Men, because it let me bring that backstory (which I’d known since Bitten) to life.

  18. Donna S says:

Congrats on the release! This is one of my favorite series. And really where I started with werewolves. Clay and Elena will always be 2 of my all time favorites. Sad to see it end but looking forward to seeing what you release next.

  19. Natalie Wright says:

Thank you for posting the order to be read. Greatly appreciated! I have 5 of them, reading in order…

  20. Kelley Armstrong says:

Thanks to everyone who stopped by. Really great questions! I hope everyone has a great end-of-summer weekend coming up. Enjoy :)

  21. sienny o says:

    hi kelley!

congrats on thirteen! will you make more spin-offs for the series now?

  22. Linda MK says:

    I have two questions-

    1. Will you push to get the TV show to an international audience? I’m in the US and really hope to watch it.

    2. Can we please please please get a novella at some point from the twins as teenagers? Please?????

  23. Vanessa P says:

I am a big fan and am sad to see an ending to such a great series although Carol’s review did make me feel better about it. I am also excited about the TV show. I think I am going to re-read all the books; that is what I normally do when a series ends. I especially enjoyed hearing about your early writing efforts. I bet they were fabulous and I think it would be great if you gave us a sample!

  24. LINDA B says:

CONGRATS KELLY! HOPE TO READ SOON!!

  25. bn100 says:

Congrats on the book! How will you be celebrating?

  26. Lindsey E says:

More paranormal storylines on tv is always a good thing. Will look for updates next year.
