Suzanne Lazear Release Party and Steampunk Contest
I’ve always been a voracious reader. When you couldn’t find me, odds were, I was hiding in a corner, nose buried in a book. I was the girl reading books under her desk in class. A great deal of my youth was spent in the indie bookstore down the street from me. It really didn’t matter if they brought me to London, Stoneybrook, or Fear Street, I devoured them like they were going out of style.
I traveled to far off and wondrous places like Pern and Darkover, I rocked out with elves who raced cars, cheered on Alanna, and fought space pirates with Sassinak. I hung out with Sookie and Rachel and wished I had a kitchen full of pixies and a splat gun. Many of these books left huge impressions on me. For years images of the burning wicker queen haunted me along with the line “I’ve got to know his name.” But for all these books I’ve read and loved, my all time favorite book has to be LITTLE MEN, by Louisa May Alcott (the sequel to LITTLE WOMEN.)
While writing Innocent Darkness it felt very natural to make my main characters Noli and V readers. I could almost imagine the two of them up in Noli’s tree house discussing books, or V reading out loud to Noli as she worked on her flying car or did the washing.
My love of reading is what ultimately caused me to write a steampunk/faery/fairytale mash-up. I sought to combine so many things that I loved into a book filled with action, innovation, adventure, and, of course, romance.
Also, given the Victorian nature of my alternate version of Los Angeles, what would be a perfectly acceptable pastime for V, being a young man, would be unacceptable for a young woman such as Noli. This lent itself to some good book-related conflict, especially after Noli is sent to boarding school. After all, who’d want their daughter labeled as a bluestocking?
NICHOMANCHAN ETHICS plays a role in the story, as it’s one of V’s favorite books and he lends it to Noli to read. He’s a fan of philosophy, history, and poetry while Noli prefers more practical books about botany and mechanics.
There were many difficult scenes to write in Innocent Darkness. One of which is the scene where the rather dreadful headmistress of Findlay House punishes Noli for having a book. To a bibliophile it’s a terrible thing indeed to be forced to rip page after page from a book and throw it into the fire. I could
practically feel Noli’s revulsion and horror—especially since the book was borrowed from V in the first place and not even hers.
Books play many roles in not just Innocent Darkness, but the entire AETHER CHRONICLES series. I even have a list of literary references up on the Aether Chronicles series webpage Noli makes references to books she’s read, like GREAT EXPECTATIONS and ALICE IN WONDERLAND. V quotes random things from philosophy to poetry. In book two, which I’m currently revising, my favorite line is when V snaps “It’s Shakespeare, you heathen.”
Yes, my characters are readers. But it’s always been my favorite pastime. If you’ll excuse me, I think I hear a book calling my name.

Thank you so much for having me on. Does anyone have any questions for me?
Hi Suzanne! Everyone seems to kind of define steampunk a little differently (and often argues this is but that isn’t). How do you as an author and reader, define steampunk ?
Hi Seleste! I think the beauty of Steampunk *is* that everyone sees it different. Innovention is at the core of Steampunk, which gives it the ability to be so many things. I see Steampunk as being the intersection of Victorian romanticism and modern technology — the future as imagined by the past. But that’s just me. As a reader I do want to see some technology and maybe some steampunky tropes, but I also love to see things blended — faeries, vampires, romance, action, alternate history — I like it all. It doesn’t need to be hard core technology or alternate history for me to enjoy a steampunk story, but that’s just me. For some people that’s exactly what they want to read. I’m so glad that steampunk is so many things because there’s a steampunk story out there for everyone — if you don’t like one, try another. The variety of steampunk worlds is only limited by our imagination.
Suzanne, When is the next book in the Aether Chronicles slated to come out? Do you have a working title for it?
Well, the original title of book 2, the one I came up with in 2009 when I was developing the series and writing book 1, was NEVER CONTENTED THINGS, which is from a Poe Poem. That will sadly, NOT be the title. We have a new one, but we’re not ready to release it. Soon — probably with the book 2 cover. I believe the book itself is going to release next August. There will be air pirates!
This is so exciting Miss Suzanne yay!!!
Thanks for the well wishes. I am super duper excited.
I bet
. Ooh I have a question, what types of music do you prefer whether it is writing or just listening to in general?
I make playlists for my stores. The playlist INNOCENT DARKNESS had a lot of Emilie Autumn on it. I like listening to Alt Rock – I’m a fan of Blink 182, the Killers, the Offspring, Linkin Park, Mumford and Sons…I’ve been listening a lot lately to the Lumineers, Imagine Dragon, Walk the Moon, and All American Rejects.
Yes, I have a question for you. what STEAMPUNK book are you most excited to read/come out soon?
It’s more gaslamp then Steampunk but I can’t wait to read Leanna Renee Hieber’s THE TWISTED TRAGEDY OF MISS NATALIE STEWART! What about you?
yours of course, but I also want to read God Save the Queen! I have it, but just don’t have the time I need to read it. -.-;
I LOVED God Save the Queen. It was amazing.
I loved Innocent Darkness! I also loved Charlotte- is she based on anyone?
Now that didn’t show up where I expected it to… But I can’t wait for The Twisted Tragedy too- I loved the first book!
Oh, thank you! Charlotte isn’t based on anyone. If fact, Charlotte wasn’t a character I planned on, she strong-armed her way into the book.
Hmm, favorite book fro my childhood…let’s see…I’ll have to say “song of the zubble-wump egg” which probably no one has ever read, but it was one of those books published by the dr. seuss company, and it had horton and the cat in the hat and the grinch.
I’ve never read that one, but I loved the Dr. Seuss books. I still have very vivid memories of our foreign exchange student reading “One Fish, Two Fish, Read Fish, Blue Fish.”
One of my favorite books (that I read myself) was “The Maze in the Heart of the Castle” probably one of the earliest books that I read myself. I still remember pieces of it.
Wow, what was it about? I still remember bits of the first book I read myself, too.
My favorite book from childhood is probabley the Last Unicorn.I read a ton of fiction when I was younger. Today because I would get so absorbed in books I have the ability to speed read and comperhand what I am reading. Let’s just say that comes in handy on timed tests. cough cough act, sat, psat. My favorite book now is the hunger game.
I love both of those! I’m a speed reader, too, in school I used to read so fast I had teachers accusing me of not actually reading the assignment — but it sure does come in handy, especially on timed tests!
The Last Unicorn was and still is an awesome book! It should be required reading in school.
My favorite book from my childhood is Ratha’s Creature by Clare Bell. I’ve always enjoyed Bell’s books, although the Ratha series remains the very favorite. It’s full of well-written adventure, lovable characters (and some loathable – Shangshar, anyone?), and thought-provoking research into the prehistoric periods. I can say the same for Tomorrow’s Sphinx, a lone novel by Bell which shaped me as a reader and writer for all its intrigue and unforgettable characters.
My favorite book now is probably Airborn by Kenneth Oppel. It’s an excellent beginning to one of the best series I’ve ever read. I also thoroughly enjoy This Dark Endeavor by Oppel, for which I anticipate the sequel in a few weeks.
I believe that not any one, but MANY books shape me as a reader/writer. Sure, there are some more than others, but I believe that everything is interpreted and appreciated differently. Summary: All books shape and inspire me. If it doesn’t, I probably don’t read it.
Oh, I’ve been wanting to read Oppel’s books!
Hi Suzanne! I was just wondering if the name of V was a reference to V for Vendetta, either the graphic novel or the movie. V, in the movie, is also a voracious reader and preserver of previous cultures. Your V seems like he plays a similar role. Was that an intended connection, or just a coincidence?
I’ve actually never read or seen V for Vendetta. I’m going to have to see/read that now.
Actually, Steven is called V by Noli because I have a friend who called her friend Steven “V” and I thought that was cute so I stole it.
Hubby is taking me out for lunch, so leave your questions and I’ll answer them when I get back!
What
OH! I haven’t read any of Kelly Meding’s books yet. But I love, love, loved The Lioness Books. So. Much. Love. for those books.
Loved Pern, Darkover, and Sassinak still one of my fav sheroes. I admit, have read very little steampunk but am intrigued by it, so looking forward to reading yours. Would rather rip out my heart than rip up a book!
The ripping out a book scene was really hard – what a horrible thing to do to a bibliophile! I spent so much time reading about Pern and Darkover, those were happy reading times. There’s some awesome steampunk out there. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN is an Urban Fantasy Steampunk where Queen Victoria is a Vampire. That was fun. I’m also a big fan of Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series.
I just finished God Save the Queen and really enjoyed it! I can’t wait to read the second book in the series, The Queen is Dead, when it comes out in February.
I want to read it now!!!
How did you decide what books you were going to have your characters like? Were they all stories that you have read or did it all depend on what their book likes were?
Thanks!
Most of the references slipped in there (like the Great Excpectations reference) and I had to then go back check and make sure that the referenced books were written before 1901. I did research the poems throughly. Okay, I asked my friends who are English teachers to help me find poems. I think everything that slipped in went well with the kind of readers V and Noli are. Now I did make one mistake that got all the way to ARCS – I made reference to the Goodey’s Lady Book, which actually had stopped printing before 1901. Whoops.
Ooh I have a question, what types of music do you prefer whether it is writing or just listening to in general? <3 and cupcakes
I think I answered this up above. But I’ll add more. I’m a classically trained musician so I find music to be a HUGE inspiration. I think Emilie Autumn’s “Across the Sky” would make a great theme song for INNOCENT DARKNESS — where in book two, I think Stone Sour’s “Through Glass” makes for a good sound track. Kevighn’s personal anthem is Fun’s “Some Nights.” I heard that and was just blown away. It describes so much about him.
Thats awesome
I’m not so musically talented unless its singing then I can do that but you know I have the drawing on my side ;P
I really admire people who can draw, because I certainly can’t!
Watership Down was my fav book from second grade onward. =)
p.s. I NEED THIS BOOK.
Thanks for stopping by! Wow. WATERSHIP DOWN. That book made me cry. So did the movie. Which one do you like better?
Dragon Singer by Anne McCaffery.
Thanks for an awesome giveaway!
The Pern books were such a huge inspiration for me as a teen and college student. The Mennoly ones were my favorites because she was a musician. I kinda still want a dragon…it would beat Los Angeles traffic any day!
By Readinc Mccaffery so early, I think that it made me more tolerant and open minded and I was able to enjoy such a wide variety of genres.
My fav book is usually the one that I”m reading right now. Which is Magic Slays by Ilona Andrews.
The Mccaffery books are just so amazing. I *heart* them.
My favourite book from childhood would probably be ‘A Fly Went By.’ It was one I’d the first books I learnt to read and by about 3 years, I would recite it to my Nan.
My favourite book now is a little harder, I love a lot of books, but my favourite would be ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen. I love the characters and story and have read it several times, I think it is just brilliant.
How have books shaped me? Hmm… Well I read a lot, and have converted some of my friends (and my Mother) into readers. I read pretty much anything fictional, but an currently reading a lot of YA. My bookshelf when I was 10 was mostly made up of Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie, weird tastes for a 10 year old. I love the fact that I read, I think it is just wonderful.
Reading is wonderful. It takes you to so many places! I, too, was reading “grown up” books at a young age — mostly scifi, fantasy, and horror, and I think doing so introduced me to so many amazing things. Can you still recite “a fly went by”?
Favorite Book as a child, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Preteen, Christine by Stephen King, as a teen The Incarnations of Immortality by Piers Anthony.
How did it shape me? How should I know? That’s expecting a lot of insight from a decayed brain.
Favorite book now? That’s like asking which child is your favorite. It simply is not done. Current reads are The Rook by Daniel O’Malley and Even White Trash Zombies Get The Blues by Diana Rowland.
Also, attending my first steampunk tea this weekend at this con. I need to do a better job with my gadgets before TeslaCon, but it’s a start…
Say hi to everyone for me. So many of my friends are there. Piers Anthony. Wow. That was my intro to SciFi/Fantasy. My teacher took away my romance novel and told me that if I was going to read trash I should read “good trash” and gave me a Piers Anthony novel (Ogre, Ogre, I think.) I read them all! What kind of gadgets? I’m going to make steampunk cupcakes for my launch party on Sunday.
Some monster hunting gear, but my brother in law is making me n authors utility belt. Slots for pens, sharpies, etc. should be cool once it’s done.
Oh, monster hunter gear? That sounds fun!
Congratulations on the release Suzi!!!!
I have one question… It’s a behind the scenes question, ready?
I know you sold the book quite a while ago… How in the world did you manage to wait for the release day! I would’ve pulled my hair out! LOL
I’m super happy for you!!! Can’t wait to read it!
*HUGS*
Lisa K
Thank you so much, Lisa! ~hugs~ It was 27 months from sale to publication. It was like being preganat for 2 years. I kept sane by writing more stuff — writing, writing, writing. Also, blogging, tweeting, facebooking, etc. I also joined two debut groups — the Class of 2k12 and the Apocalypsies, so having other people going through the same thing helped. I’m not sure I could have gotten through it without them.
Hmm favorite book from childhood…when I was little I loved The Monster at the End of This Book. That and the whole series of seraphina books. The Wheedle on the Needle being my favorite out of those : ) my favorite book now is The Giver by Lous Lowry. I read it the first time in middle school and have read it at least 10 times since then and everytime it’s just as good as the first time I read it!
Ok my question is kinda random. When you’re writing, is there anything that you just have to have or do?
I am usually juggling a family and a full time job, so I’ve learned to write anywhere and everywhere. I do often make book specific playlists, the music (and headphones) can help me focus on writing, especially during noisy situations (or while the cartoons are on). Thanks for stopping by!
I’ve finally got the kids off to school, so I’ce finally made it to the party!! *Throws Confetti* Better late than never!!
Happy release day Suzanne! You must be pretty excited!!
Did you happen to see your book in any shops when you went out to lunch today??
I wasn’t a big reader when I was at school. It’s only been the last few years that I have become an obsessed reader!! I have alot of favourite books now however. Richelle Mead is one of my favourite YA Authors and I loved her Vampire Academy series and now her Bloodlines series too (spin-off). I’m hanging for her next book!!
How many books do you plan to write in this series?
I hope you have a fantastic day today!!
N
We went to one bookstore at lunch and they couldn’t find my book.
We’re going to go out later tonight and visit another.
I like Richelle Mead, too.
I will write as many books in this series as they’ll let me.
I hope you find it tonight!! You can’t go all day without seeing it anywhere!! It’s supposed to be party day!! Lol!!
I hope we see heaps of books then!! I like to see more than 3 books in the series, but I get too attached to the characters then too!!
And Air Pirates in book 2!! I’m excited already!!
I did! We went to another bookstore and I found my book. They even let me sign it.
That’s so cool!! I’m glad you found it!! What a fantastic way to end your Book Release Day!! Go Innocent Darkness!!
Hi Suzanne,
I just dropped by to say how excited I am about the release of your book! I look forward to reading Innocent Darkness. Congratulations!
Best,
Ann
Thank you so much, Ann! ~hugs~
One of my favorite books from when I was growing up was A Wrinkle in Time. I actually love the whole quartet by L’Engle. I used to read them every year, over and over, because they were so imaginitive and descriptive.
I don’t have a favorite book right now because it constantly changes. This year I think my 2 favorite books I’ve read are The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and Where Things Come Back by Corey Whaley.
I read so much as a child and as a teen, I just grew to love books and the love of writing and reading. I loved it so much it became my focus in college, and I’m now a librarian. I spend my days surrounded by books trying to pass my love on to people of all ages!
Yay for librarians! I’ve read many great books because a librarian recomended it to me. My old high school english teacher just reminded me that I need to tell my old high school librarian about my book. I worked in the library in high school (and loved it, especially shelving books.)
I ahven’t read The Fault in Our Stars yet but it’s on my TBR list. I can’t wait to turn in book 2 edits so I can have time to read!
Thanks for dropping by!
Great party, Suzi. I was a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, Laura Ingalls Wilder and also anything fantasy, so that has definitely played into what I write today. As to current favorites? Usually whatever I’ve just finished. Most recently I really liked Kate Cross’s Heart of Brass.
My question for you is what’s coming next?
Oh, I have not read Heart of Brass yet, but I am reading all the Laura Ingalls books with my daughter.
Book 2 is next!
Well, I am dabbling in Elfpunk and Cyberpunk. I have a huge softspot for Elfpunk, especially all the stuff written in the 80′s and 90′s, with the rock and roll elves and the like.
Thanks for coming by!
I’m heading over to #yalitchat on twitter. Stop by for more prizes. I’ll be back later tonight! Thanks for all the great questions.
Wow! I just saw how long it took from sale to publication. So what did you do anything special when you found out you sold it? And what about when you found out the actual release date?
When I sold I celebrated by taking my daughter to McDonalds.
I just kept busy. Today we went to sushi.
My favorite book as a kid was The Library Card by Jerry Spinelli. I devoured that book many times over, I especially loved Mongooses story. I think it was beautifully written and as a kid I had a hard time understanding why other kids didnt read as much as I did!
I always wondered why you’d watch TV when you could read a book.
Sorry! Didnt realize there were more questions =/
When I was a kid I was a HUGE reader. Pretty much anything I could get my hands on. My mother would give me time to pick out books at the library but it was never enough time to get as many as I wanted. Sometimes I would go through 2 books a day, if my mom wasnt yelling at me to stop reading and do other things. And that makes me happy, because now I am equally as into reading as I was as a kid. Its my own personal escape. One thing I pride myself on is how much I read!
My favorite book currently is The fault in our stars by John Green. So much raw emotion in it and it helped me deal with things going through my life. I would recommend it to anyone who hasnt read it!
I was like that as a kid too — and I want to read that book. Thanks for stopping by!
Since I don’t have a more serious question at the moment… if you had a pet dragon, what would you name it? =)
I’m not sure. What would you name a dragon? But I had a ceramic dragon named Spike when I was a kid. My brother gave it to me (and named it.) It was purple. Thanks for stopping by!
Okay, I’m heading out to see if I can find my book in a store. I’ll check in before I go to bed. Feel free to ask questions!
I have a question for you now that i’ve read your answers both here and on twitter. My question would have to be, what was your favorite part in writing Innocent Darkness? And have the characters changed your life in anyway and by changing your life, I mean did you learn anything new about yourself that showed up in your characters? Do you see a part of who you are in any of the characters?
Thanks for coming by! I’m pretty independant, like Noli — and I love to read. Writing INNOCENT DARKNESS was very much a journey, one that keeps continuing in different legs: writing to selling, selling to publication, publication and beyond, and I do learn something about myself and grow as a writer with each one of those journeys.
I have to say, my favorite book is The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff. It was so perfect in it’s ugly petty way that I couldn’t help but be captivated. My childhood favorite book though was Patricia Wrede’s Dealing With Dragons series. Loved the main character and I remember rushing to the library, inhaling book after book until I couldn’t stand it. Love Patricia Wrede.
Oh, I loved the Dealing With Dragons books. I totally forgot about those! I should get them for my daughter. Thanks for reminding me of them.
from childhood it has to be one of the many Nancy Dreww mysteries.
The Clue in the Jewel Box was my favorite Nancy Drew book. What was yours?
Nancy Drew definitely trained me to love suspense & romance
Do you have a favorite mystery book or series now?
Favorite mystery series now is probably JD Robb’s In Death series
The Time Travelers Wife is my overall favorite out of the thousands I’ve read as an adult
Loved that book!
What books are on your nightstand or in your TBR pile right now?
On my nightstand right now is – If I Lie by Corrine Jackson, Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi, Kiss of Steel by Bec McMaster, and The Iron Wyrm Affair by Lilith Saintcrow.
Do you have any unusual or special talents excluding your storytelling abilities?
I’m a former competitive Irish Dancer. I started writing for young adults because of the teens in my dance class.
If you could be any Disney charactor, who would it be and why?
Either Belle, because she likes books or Merida, because she rides horses and shoots bows and arrows!
my favorite book where Anne McCaffery pern books loved all of them.
I loved them too, especially the ones about Mennoly, because she was a musician.
thay shaped me but so did TV like star trek and stuff led me to syfi for most of my life only a few years back did I start reading Paranormal instead good timing because paranormal to off and now there is so many great book.don’t know if I tried steam bunk yet but willing to give it a try.
I have very fond memories of watching Star Trek with my father. If you like paranormal, you might try Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series, it’s steampunk with vampires and werewolves, they’re quite witty and funny.
my favorite book now is Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Acheron
Oh, I haven’t read that one yet. I’ve heard a lot about it though.
Thanks for all the great questions. I’m going to turn in for the night. I’ll come back in the morning to answer any more questions (FYI, I’m on west coast time). Have a great night everyone!
The Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. I’ve read it so many times that my copy had lost both covers and a few last pages, but I still remember every adventure very clearly.
I was always intrigued by Robin Hood. Have you read Scarlet by AC Gaughen? It’s a pretty fun take on the Robin Hood mythos (What is Will Scarlet was actually a girl.)
This book first introduced me to the idea that not all books end well for the main character.
That happens sometimes. Personally, I’m a fan of books that end with a “happily for now.” What about you?
My top favorite books right now are the Harry Potter series. It’s just amazing, I never get tired of rereading them.
I like those books as well! (I’ve read all of them and seen the movies) I read my first when I was a college student studying in Austria. Which do you like better, the books or the movies (or both)?
Have you ever written fan fiction? For what series/movie? Do you read fanfic by others?
In college I wrote some (pretty bad) Darkover fanfic.
The pokey little puppy
It’s such a classic!
q1. the most memorable book from my childhood are any enyd blyton’s book. i read and re-read them plenty of times.
q2. i’m not sure how did they shape me, cause i’m reading various genre now. so maybe they give me my love on books, any kind of books
q3. my, in death series by J.D. Robb of course. i love the characters, the settings, the cases, the technologies, everything!
my question for you is, and you’ve probably been asked so many times before, why did you choose to write a YA steampunk? why not dysthopian or horror or other genre?
I wrote nine manuscripts before I sold. Innocent Darkness was #10 – my second YA and my second steampunk. Most of the nine were adult urban fantasy and lacked imporant things books need — plots. I found that I liked writing for teens and steampunk is such a fun and imaginative genre to write in. I would like to try my hand at elfpunk and cyberpunk sometime.
Hi Suzanne
Congrats on the release of Innocent Darkness! Do you have any plans for a follow up to I.D.?
1. My 2 favorite books growing up were Pippi Longstocking & The Enchanted Island and Other stories by William Shakespear.
2. The two books shaped me as a reader in that I became very interested in cities, living on my own (I can choose the color of MY bedroom!), Faeries, botany/herbalism and paranormal liturature.
3. My favorite book now is …Innocent Darkness by Suzanne Lazear!
Thanks for the cool contest Suzanne and The Site Hostess,
Mindy
Birdsooong@aol.com
Hi Mina! It is? Thank you! I
What are your top 3 favorite cupcakes?
That’s hard. I like chocolate cupcakes!
Hi Mina! It is? Thank you! I’m working on the sequel to Innocent Darkness right now. There are airships.
Any more questions? Thanks so much everyone!
This is horrible, but I don
I know what book you’re talking about — and I can’t remember the name either!
I consider Firefly to be a Space Western — the main reason being is that in Steampunk the technology needs to use materials avaliable in the 19th century. That being said, I LOVE Firefly and I watched a ton of it for “research” while writing book two, which should release next summer. (My favorite episode is
“Shindig”.)
If you could choose only one time period and place to live, when and where would you live and why?
Hmmm, where I’d like to see some other eras, I think I like living here.
You woke up this morning and realized you had been reincarnated as a pair of shoes.
Describe yourself.
Boots, stylish but comfortable.
If you were selected today for an outer space adventure, would you go?
Anywhere!
Hi there! I have to say the book sounds really good, I just bought it at amazon, really looking forward to reading it. One of my favorite books is The Blue Sword by Robin Mckinley. I think it helped to shape me by letting me know women can be just as strong as men, just as important. It shows that I like reading about strong intelligent kick ass women today!! Another favoite was The white Dragon. Love Pern!!
My favorite now is a little hard to pinpoint. I always go back and re-read the black jewels trilogy by anne Bishop, love those books, I also really like Grave Witch by Kalayna Price.
What are your thoughts on audiobooks? Listen tho them? Want to see this in audio?
Thanks and congrats!!
I love the Blue Sword (and Pern.)
I like to listen to audiobooks, especially in the car. I’d love for Innocent Darkness to be in audio book.
Thanks for stoping by!
My favorite book from childhood is probably Ender’s Game. It’s one of the few books assigned to me in class that I actually read completely and enjoyed!
The books I read as a child and teen shaped me as a reader just by feeding my voracious appetite! Basically, my reading as a child and teen just taught me that I could read a lot, and all kinds of things were interesting and enjoyable.
My favorite book now? That’s a hard one… Let’s go with… Grendel, by John Gardner.
One of the things I like best about books is that they can take you to far off places.
What do you do “to color outside of the lines”?
I like to mix things up, combining things that you might not at first thing to combine, yet still make sense. (Like steampunk and faeries).
What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
I’d like to see Perks of Being a Wallflower when it comes out.
If we looked under your bed, what would we find?
Nothing, there’s no space between the mattress and the floor!
Not even a teeny, tiny steam driven mechanical dust bunny collector?
Mindy

It would have to be microscopic to fit!
I loved Mr. Popper’s Penguins when I was a child. I’ve loved penguins ever since. It was also the first book I have ever stuck around for until the end. Now, my favorite book is Clockwork Angel. I love historical fiction and steampunk.
I remember Mr. Popper’s Penguins! I like Clockwork Angel, too. Have you ever read The Girl in the Steel Corset? That’s also a fun read.
What was one book you absolutely hated and couldnt understand why other people enjoyed?
I don’t know. I’m so busy that if I don’t like a book I don’t read much of it.
What was the first store you found your book in when you went out to look? =]
Bookstar!
If you could live in a literary world which would you choose (and yes you can say yours) and what your role there would be?
Wow, I have no idea! I think I’d want to live on Pern or Darkover.
