Blood Guilt (Book One of the Blood Hunters Series) by Marie TreanorHello! Lovely to be back at Bitten at Books!

Funnily enough, the last time I was here was to celebrate the end of a series (the release of Blood Eternal, finale of the Awakened by Blood trilogy). Today, I’m celebrating the start of a new one!

Blood Guilt opens the Blood Hunters series, so I had all the thrill of writing something fresh and new… and yet I felt as if I were greeting old friends. Well, that’s because I was. ☺. Although Blood Guilt should be able to stand alone, it does continue the story begun in Awakened by Blood. The new series focuses on the vampire hunters who first appeared as Elizabeth’s friends and mentors in Blood on Silk- brave, strong, dedicated people, sacrificing personal happiness to duty. But I found I couldn’t bear to leave them unhappy and unfulfilled, and it was they who continued telling the story in my head.

So writing Blood Guilt, seeing my familiar world through the eyes of the feisty yet tragic Mihaela, made it seem very different! Unlike Elizabeth, Mihaela’s been fighting the undead all her life. She watched a vampire slaughter her family when she was seven years old. So, now that that the world is changing and vampires are beginning to step out of the shadows, how is she supposed to adjust to the new alliance imposed by her superiors and the vampire overlord Saloman? Worse, how is she meant to deal with her appalling attraction to the mysterious and treacherous vampire Maximilian, who saved her life at the end of Blood Eternal, and whose help she needs in Blood Guilt?

Only one way to find out !☺

You can read excerpts on my website: http://www.marietreanor.com/BloodGuilt.htm#excerpts

Reader Questions:
The other thing that made me think of old friends while I was writing Blood Guilt, was the setting of the story: Scotland, Hungary and Malta – all countries I’ve visited (or, in the case of Scotland, live in!). So I have a few questions for you:

Have you ever been to these places, and what did you think of them? If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would that be?
Secondly, where do you imagine the ideal home for a vampire would be?
And thirdly, how do you feel about spin-off series? Are you glad to catch up with old friends? Do you obsess about reading books in order, and so leave the spin-offs until you’ve read the original series? All views and comments welcome ☺.

  1. Good afternoon, all! In fact, it’s evening here, a bit grey and dull, just the weather to be inside, partying on the computer :) . What’s it like where you are?

Thrilled to be back, and ready to chat!

Hi Marie!!! Welcome Back!!! Unfortunately, I have never visited any of those places, but at least reading let’s you mentally travel there. :) I have been to London, and I’ve love to go to Italy & Greece. I’m a bit of a history geek, so I’d love walk among the ruins.

As for spin-offs, I have to read a series in order, so any spin-offs usually come second. Question for you, playing in the same world as before, do you find it hard to write from another point of view when you were so in tune with the characters from the original story line?

Best place for a vamp to live – assuming they still love the shadows – someplace with lots of nightlight: NYC, New Orleans, Vegas.

How many books are planned for this series? Is it another trilogy?

    • Thank you, Heatwave :) I’m so with you on ruins! I’ve been to Greece and Italy, but only seen tiny parts of both! I lived in London for a couple of years – great fun but BUSY!

To answer your question: yes, I did find it hard to adjust to Mihaela’s and Maximilian’s POV! Everything is different through their eyes – familiar to them, but not the reader, and yet you can’t assume the reader knows as much as they do – tricky :) .

I was originally planning a series, but now it’s expanding in my head – maybe four books now. Maybe more!

    Answers to Marie Treanor’s Questions:

    1. No, I have never visited Scotland, Hungary or Malta – though I think it would be fun to visit any of these countries.

    2. I think the ideal home for a vampire would depend on whether or not the vampires can go out in the daylight and summer heat. If they can go out in the daylight – then I would say the tropics would be a great place to live because of the climate and people running around in swimsuits (more places to bite). If not, then someplace where it’s dark more days than not and cooler.

    3. I love spin off series – it’s the best of both worlds because we get to catch up with old friends and see what’s taking place in their lives and at the same time we get to make new friends and find out new things that are going on the world the author has created.

    Question for Marie:

What was it about Mihaela that made you want to tell her story first in this new series and for you to pair her up with Max?

Question for Marie – Will we get to see much of Elizabeth and Saloman and how their relationship is going or will we only see them in “cameo” type appearances?

    • Well, they’re still very much central to the ongoing story, so you will get glimpses of their relationship growing, but they’re at a quiet stage just now and for the time being, other people’s relationships are probably more exciting :) .

1-Have never visited any of these places, but would dearly love to visit Scotland and also Ireland.

2-The ideal place for a vampire to live would be any area with a large population-more to feed on without the temptation of killing, and more variety to choose from.

3-Spinn offs are great, because it gives the reader a chance to revisit old friends or locations while meeting new characters and places. The best of both worlds, as it were.

Marie, where did the Blood Hunters originate-what is their full philosophy and how do you see them growing or changing as time goes by?

    • Hi Nancy!

Between you and me, there are MANY places in Scotland I still have to see! And most of Ireland :) .

The hunters came into existence originally to control the unruly hybrid vampires which began to proliferate as the pure bred Ancients died out. So they’ve been around since the dark ages/early medieval period. Originally, the hunters allied with the Ancients to control the hybrids, but with time, this has been forgotten, and the hunters came to regard all vampires as the enemy. So Saloman’s bid for world domination which Elizabeth’s influence commutes to alliance with humanity, churns their world upside down. They have to develop an understanding of the undead rather than simply hunt and kill them.

I could ramble on for ages, but maybe that’s enough for now :) . Thanks for asking, Nancy!

    Rachel Flesher / Raonaid Luckwell

    • You never know, Raonaid! You might get to see all the places you want to one day – hope you do :) .

New Orleans seems a popular choice – is than Anne Rice’s fault, do you think? As Transylvania is Bram Stoker’s :) .

Ooh, difficult question! As a writer, I think I get the best of both worlds – living in my fantasy worlds without any of the dangers :) . I think I’d have to be a different person in a literary world – more forceful and decisive :) .

And that’s a good point about vampires living in the far north… although it might be hard for them in the summer in the lands of the midnight sun :) . Maybe they should migrate like birds :) .

Hi, Marie. Welcome back to BBB!

I have not been to any of the places you mention, but would love to go, especially to Scotland. The one place in the world I want to go is the UK/Great Britain.

I think of coties and other places with a lot of history as the perfect place for vampires to live. Of course, the ideal location for particular ones depends upon the series and mythos.

I do like spin-off series, and though I would prefer to read the originals first, I don’t have to do so.

Marie, what kinds of things do you enjoy doing for relaxation?

Hi Marie! I’ve always enjoyed vampire stories so your newest series has caught my interest. Mihaela sounds so vulnerable even though she’s a vampire hunter and I think I’m going to like her a lot. I definitely want to cheer for her.

I have never been to the places you mentioned but I would love to visit Scotland one day.

If I could visit anywhere in the world my choice would be Scotland or Ireland. There is so much history there and I would love explore the castles.

I’ve always thought places full of history (old world) suited vampires better. They are used to time passing so a timeless and classic place might make them more comfortable.

I don’t mind spin-offs at all. Often I look forward to seeing old characters come to visit just so I can see how they are doing in life.

Hi, Marie – Have you ever been to these places? Sadly, no. I’m shackled to either the writing desk or the work desk. But if I could visit anywhere in the world, it would be Scotland — it’s at the top of my list. The Highlands, the castles, the history. And I do love those men in kilts.

Where do you imagine the ideal home for a vampire would be? Anywhere they want. Today’s society allows for it. They can be as bold or recluse as they choose and we, as authors fuel the fires.

How do you feel about spin-off series? I’m thrilled to catch up with old friends from the stories I’ve fallen in love with. Some are like coming home – whether I’ve read them or written them.

And absolutely I obsess about reading books in order. You might miss something important. I’m even rententative enough to go back and start over before the next one comes out — just for the refresh. You know, it’s like drinks with old friends.

Very excited for you on your new release! Sending you many blessings.

Congrats on the new release! I love your books.
I think the best place for vampires would be a city that is alive and busy at night…New York City or Las Vegas.

I lived in Ireland when I was 6 (we moved there when my dad was doing a tour in Viet Nam).. I would love to go back someday and also visit Scotland and Wales.

I love series….I enjoy learning what is going on in characters lives that I have read about in previous book….I started reading series romance and was spoiled by authors like Diana Palmer, Iris Johansen, Debbie Macomber, Joah Holh, etc.

To answer your question, I’m not sure how many books there will be in this series. Originally I thought three, but now I’m thinking at least four :) .

The next series coming up from me is called SERAFINA’S. It’s centred on a unique Psychic investigation agency based in Edinburgh. The first book is called SERAFINA AND THE SILENT VAMPIRE, and it should be released at the end of August. It’s a very different world to the Blood Hunters world, but I’m finding it great fun too!

The three official east European hunters, Mihaela, Istvan and Konrad will all have their say. Plus those unofficial hunters, Cyn and Rudy from America and John Ramsay from Scotland. Plus a few vampires that I’ve grown fond of… Maximilian, Angyalka, Dmitriu, Bela, Travis… And even a messed-up human prostitute that never even had a speaking part -I’ve been worrying about her and decided she needs a bit of rehabilitation. :) .

    Planner or pantzer?
DO you follow a “formula” when you write? DO you outline your ideas, write in a specific order

    • I’m a bit of a mixture, Lisa! I used to be a complete pantster, but you can get yourself into writing difficulties that way that take a lot of sorting out! When I got the contract with NAL for the Awakened by Blood trilogy, I had to write much more detailed plans than I was used to, and that taught me the value of them!

However, I’m still a pantster at heart! Nowadays I tend to write vague, flexible plans, and when I come to a complicated bit, I plan it out in more detail, to make sure it makes sense to a reader as well as to me :) . Of course my characters can still mess it up, but that’s their privilege :) .

Then, after I’ve nagged everyone out of bed, my husband’s off to work, my sons have caught the bus to high school and I’ve dropped my daughter off at primary school, I come back and write until I have to collect her from school again. I only break to make coffee or lunch, and drink/eat while I’m writing.

Occasionally I’ll get in an extra hour after school, but that depends on my kids :) .

Scotland is on my list of places to visit, so is New Zeland. They each have their own savage beauty that I can’t wait to explore.
I can imagine how much fun it is to write a spin off, you work so long on your characters and get attached to them. Just as we readers do, so I always enjoy a spin off series. If I love the characters in a series I hate to see it end, and rejoyce when an author finds a way to keep it going.
Do you have an idea in mind on how long this spin off will go? Maybe it has been asked already, I should try reread the other questions.

    • Hi Lexi,

New Zealand’s on my list too – ever since Lord of the Rings :) .

How long will the series go on? Not sure yet! If I go for four books, let’s say eighteen months to two years? Unless I add more books to the series, of course :) .

I’ve never been to Scotland, Hungary or Malta. I would love to visit NEW YORK CITY.

The ideal home for a vampire has to be a castle somewhere. The older, the better.

I do enjoy spin-off series. I would have to read the original first, because I MUST read the books in order.

    Okay Marie –

Almost halfway through Blood Guilt – does that mean I’m going to have to start begging for the next book in the series soon? And yes, having fun with the new toy.

As for travel – never been out of the US, not even to Canada or Mexico.

I like Maximillian’s lighthouse – that seemed a pretty cool place for a vampire.

Spin-offs are okay – where would CSI and NCIS be without them :)

Sorry – got distracted by this book I’m reading

    • Hi kk!

Glad to hear the Kindle – and BLOOD GUILT! – are occupying you :) . Vaguely planning on the next book – BLOOD OF ANGELS – for January, because I’ve a couple of other new series in the queue :) .

Marie – do you have a Scottish burr? Trying to imagine how that would change the pitch of the story if you did.

    kk

    • Well, I definitely have a Scottish accent. My parents were Scottish and I’ve lived here most of my life. But that’s normal to me, so it doesn’t sound like a “burr” :) .

When I’m writing dialogue, I try to write the pattern of the speech as I hear it, rather than changing the spelling of the words, whether my character is Scottish, American, Romanian or whatever. Not sure how obvious that is, unless I throw in the odd native word (like with Robbie in BLOOD GUILT) :) .

      Interesting question!

  36. Janet W USA says:

As my mother’s family is basically from Germany I’d like to go there. But on my father’s side there’s some definite English, Irish, and I suspect some Scotts so I’d like to go there too. I’ve tracked his side back to Pennsylvania USA so I’d like to go there as well. Just wish I could get them jumped over the pond, genealogically speaking.

    1. Alas I’ve never been to any of the countries. I would love to go to Scotland.
    2. The ideal place for vampires to live in this age would be anywhere they would be happy. Also if they were day walkers they could really enjoy the life without the fear of getting dusted.
    3. I love to read about old friends in new situations, so spin offs are some of my favorite reads.

How many people do you have talking in your head most of the time when you are writing?
I think it could get very crowded, or do you only alow a certain number at a time?

    • Lol, Lisa, it DOES get crowded in there sometimes, but the truth is I have no control over who or how many :) . My heroes and heroines do most of the talking, I suppose, but other characters do insist on their say now and then. When these lesser characters become particularly insistent, like Maximilian and Mihaela, I begin to think of spin-offs :)

I had to fix the hair and makeup of a good friend that had passed away 2 days ago and then went to her funeral yesterday. Do you think this is the reason that vampires were invented, to let our friends live on in someway or other?

    • Hi Lisa – I’m very sorry to hear about your friend. But I think you have a point: we don’t like thinking of death as the end; we want to be able to see our loved ones again. I believe Anne Rice wrote Interview with the Vampire to help her deal with her daughter’s tragic death. ~Immortality is definitely intriguing…

  44. Dovile says:

    Hi,

I haven’t been to these places you mentioned, but I’d really like to visit Scotland someday, as well as Japan and New Zealand.

I think Antarctica would be the perfect place if the vampire has an outside supply of blood – it’s uninhabited and nights are long there for about half a year, so it’s very safe. Or maybe somewhere in Siberia would be suitable too.

I like spin-offs as they means more stories in a fictional universe I like, especially if they have cameos by characters from the parent series. I hate spoiling myself by reading books out of order, so I always read the original series first.

Have you ever written fanfic? In what series?

    Thanks!

      Interesting idea :) .

No, I haven’t written fanfiction since I was a kid, when I used to write my own stories based on my favourite TV series. Non one but me ever read them :) And I found in time that I preferred to write about my own characters. I can see that it would be fun, though… :)

Good morning lady’s. I would have to say I’ve never been to any of the places you’ve listed. But I would love to visit France and Italy, Paris for dessert and italy for the food. Lol!! Well the perfect setting for vampire I’d say is forest area they would own a alot of land and be kind of isolated. I mean they need there privacy. I hate reading a book out of sequence I feed lost and like I’m cheating. I think it just messes up the flow of a story.

    -) (+03) – Hiya folks! :)

Q1) Oh lordy, no, never been outside the US… if I could, London… Paris… Egypt… back to Disney World! :)

Q2) Well, my very first thoughts are based on the original ideas of Dracula – cold, dark castle in a creepy area of Europe, where he lives in the basement with a coffin as a bed, and we only see him at night. After that… that anymore, they live anywhere, do anything, can be just as normal as anyone else. Just have that whole undead thing going on behind closed doors.

Q3) That’s why I love series in general – we know whose story is coming up, and we might see at least glimpses, if not more, return visits from old friends. And yeah, most of the time I tend to obsess with reading order, regardless of the fact that it might be utterly unnecessary to do so, but, hey, I’m nuts that way. But if it’s a new to me author, and I’m interested in one story, but it isn’t the first book, I’ll read it to see if I like them, and then go for the other books. If it’s an autobuy author, yep, guaranteed read them in order. LOL

My obit?? Guessing I won’t care by then :) . I suppose I would just liked to have been loved and made a difference to a few people’s lives. Of course, I wouldn’t mind being called the greatest, bestselling author of all time, but hey, I’m a realist :) .

Yes, St. Andrews is a lovely university – the oldest in Scotland, and in the whole UK after Oxford and Cambridge. Very picturesque! I made Elizabeth in the Awakened by Blood novels study and work there :) .

Wildlife Communications sounds interesting! Is that communicating with wildlife or about wildlife? Or have I got completely the wrong end of the stick?
