Author Brynna Curry Character Interview and $20.00 Amazon Gift Card Contest

Posted by Site Hostess Monday June 25, 2012

Fire's Ice (Elemental Magic) by Brynna CurryBrynna: Good morning! It’s a pleasure to visit with Bitten by Books today. Joining me is Devin McLoch, recurring character in the Elemental Magic series. His story, Fire’s Ice, released this month. Hi, Dev. Thanks for being here.

Devin: Hey, Bryn, how are the kids?

Brynna: Doing good, driving me a little crazy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Thanks for taking time to be here today. Do you mind answering some questions for our readers?

Devin: Not at all. What’s on your mind?

Brynna: Okay, we’ll just jump right in then. When did you first use magic and realize power would always be a part of your existence?

Devin: I was born a laird’s son, so power struggles were something I dealt with every day. Still, magic is different. I was seven when the visions started. Shadowy images; whispered sounds. Simple like hearing someone’s words before they actually said them or knowing a trencher(that’s a plate) was about to be knocked off the table to the floor. It unnerved my father, Duncan. I was his heir, but in his world, all things magic were evil incarnate including me. Father blamed the sliver of faerie blood my mother possessed for my gifts.

At twelve, my phoenix fire began to emerge; my father could no longer ignore my powers existed. Mother went against his wishes and summoned her cousin Daemon to teach me control before I killed someone or myself with the power. Lucky for me, I was a quick study. By the time I turned sixteen I had complete control, at twenty I had mastered all the other elements as well.

Brynna: You’ve never mentioned your father and now I see why. What is the hardest thing about living a thousand years?

Devin: Time. Just finding a way to spend the endless time. If I had stopped to think about the infinity of what was ahead, it would have driven me mad. I turned twenty five a week before the MacGavins attacked. I had spent my life preparing to lead our clan, to defend and protect those in my charge and I failed. I grieved the loss of my family until I thought the pain would kill me, but it didn’t. I became a swordsman for hire, craved danger and death. No matter what I tried, nothing could end my cursed existence. I roamed the world and longed for Scotland.

Brynna: What made you decide to change your destructive course?

Devin: I found my way to Ireland, to the stone dance by the sea on the day of Daemon’s daughter’s death. The village was quiet, in mourning over their beloved healer Sorca. I realized something then as I stood in the shadows while her children, those of her blood and those of her heart, buried their mother. My clan wasn’t gone. Sorca’s family was mine as well. I was needed. I had a duty to protect those she left behind.

Brynna: When did you realize the Ari in the bubble might not be the Ari people thought she was?

Devin: I heard a soft sobbing on the wind after Sorca’s burial. I followed the sound hoping to offer comfort and found myself outside the dance. I couldn’t see her, but I could feel Arianne’s grief and love for her niece. I knew then. I understood what it was like to grieve alone. I had to help her, though at the time I resented having Ari magically betrothed to me. I prefer to do the choosing. I tried to push through the barrier of magic surrounding the stones but it was no use. All of our powers, including hers, held Ari bound.

Brynna: So in a way, Ari saved you. What do you miss most about your life a thousand years ago (outside of your family), and what do you like best about life today?

Devin: The simplicity of everyday life. The world moves so fast now we don’t take time to enjoy it. Still, technology fascinates me.

Brynna: Do you always have control over your powers?

Devin: I’d like to say yes, but the truth is when I am worried, sick or upset I have to calm my mind for the magic to obey me.

Brynna: If we asked Ari to describe you in three words, what would she say?

Devin: Hmm. That’s a good question. Arrogant, powerful and fiercely protective. She’d be right. There is nothing I wouldn’t do, no lengths I wouldn’t go to protect those I love. My family is the most important aspect of my life.

Brynna: What one thing fascinates you about Ari the most?

Devin: Ari is just an amazing person. It isn’t any one thing but countless little things she does. The way she cares for others, gives of herself even when it would be wise to back away. She’s beautiful of course, fun and sexy, but it’s her loving nature that attracts me the most.

Brynna: Thanks for taking the time to visit with us, Dev, and telling us a little about your past. I know it can’t be easy for you.

Devin: Anytime, Bryn. I’ll be hanging around for a little while to answer questions.

Brynna: Wonderful! Alright y’all. The floor is all yours. Anything you’ve been dying to ask Devin? Go for it. We’ll both be here looking forward to your comments.

    Hey Brynna,
Thanks for visiting BBB and sharing with us. I was checking out the books in this series and was wondering how interconnecting they were? They appear to be about the same world but different characters?

      Hi, Lisa.

Thanks for visiting! They are very connected. Each book is a piece of the whole story. To Take Up the Sword is really the only one that can be truly read as a standalone, but it also closes threads in the previous book. All the Elemental Magic characters are introduced in Earth Enchanted with each book shifting focus onto a different couple. Fire’s Ice tells the end of the story and sheds light on Devin’s shadowed past.

  3. Devin McLoch says:

Hey, Bitten by Books. It’s great to be here. Looking forward to your questions.

    +1 Planner or pantzer?
DO you follow a “formula” when you write? DO you outline your ideas, write in a specific order

    • Brynna Curry says:

Pantser. Definitely. But if I’m writing as series, there are some elements that I must plan for the arc. Thanks!

  5. Lisa R smalltown NC foothills

+1 What projects do you have planned for the future?

    total=36

    • Brynna Curry says:

A follow up series to Elemental Magic. Shadows of Seven tells the stories of Allie and the other Corrigan children. You can find out more about it at http://shadowsofsevenseries.blogspot.com

Also a romantic suspense series set in Alabama featuring three brothers, the chief of police Cade, FBI agent Drew, and Jack (also a cop).

  6. Lisa R smalltown NC foothills

+1 What is the best book you have ever read?

    total=37

    • Brynna Curry says:

Wow! That’s a tough one. Hmm. I don’t know if its the absolute best book, but its surely my favorite.—Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I am a huge Kenyon fan.

  7. Lisa R smalltown NC foothills

+1 What was the first moment you knew you had to write?

    total=38

    • Brynna Curry says:

I’ve always wanted to write, and many things led to taking that direction, but I knew I HAD to actively write and attempt publishing my work after a dream I had back in 2005. I dreamed of Briella and Daemon’s battle at the stone circle (aka. Liv’s legend) that is mentioned throughout the series. After that, it became an obsession to tell their story, whatever it was. Strange, but true.

  8. Lisa R smalltown NC foothills

+1 Do you have any unusual or special talents excluding your storytelling abilities?

    total=39

    • Brynna Curry says:

I play several different instruments including french horn, trumpet, flute, piccolo, and drums. I also do my own home repairs, not sure if that’s a talent, lol, but it certainly comes in handy.

  10. Raonaid Luckwell says:

    Rachel Flesher/Raonaid Luckwell

    • Devin McLoch says:

For me, this usually happens more with projects that specific scenes. For instance, right now the first Shadow book (Allie’s story) and book one of the new Romantic suspense series (Cade and Taylor’s story) are vying for my attention. I keep both files open on my laptop and switch between the two story worlds when I need too. Scenes come to me like flashes of movie clips. Even if it isn’t completely fleshed out, I try to write down as much as I can before I lose the inspiration and then go back to what I was working on.

  11. Raonaid Luckwell says:

If you could pick a theme song for your stories or character what song would that be?

    Total – 31

    • Brynna Curry says:

That’s a good question. Each couple has a song that tends to speak to me. Sometimes its a whole playlist.

      Here they are:

Earth Enchanted — Brooks and Dunn (It’s getting better all the time)
Wait for the Wind — Brooks and Dunn (Red Dirt Road)
Sea’s Sorceress — BeeGees (More than a Woman)
Fire’s Ice — Earth, Wind and Fire (That’s the Way of the World)

For the Shadow series, its a playlist of Creed and Nickleback. For the RS one, its alot of country music.

  12. Raonaid Luckwell says:

    What is your favorite mythology?

    Total – 32

    • Brynna Curry says:

I like to read about Ancient Egypt and of course, I love Greek mythology. Lots of lessons to learn in those stories.

  13. Raonaid Luckwell says:

If you could live in any literary world, including your own, which would you choose and what would your role be?

    total – 33

    • Brynna Curry says:

I’d live in the world of Elemental Magic, but in the future a bit. I’d be a family friend with some wicked magic powers of my own!

  14. Raonaid Luckwell says:

Who is your favorite literary character? One that you wished you had thought of and created?

    total – 34

  15. Brynna Curry says:

I wouldn’t say I have a favorite character, more a type of character. I like those heroes or heroines who are flawed, just a little shady but still good at heart who eventually redeem their wicked ways. Thanks for the questions!

Not a particular author, but I loved the Anne of Green Gables books, and Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. The heroines of those stories influenced the writing bug.

      <<>>
Sherrilyn Kenyon — I freely admit that I am a Dark-Hunter addict. lol

I’d love to see all of my books turned into movies. (I couldn’t pick just one.) I think the one with the most movie potential is Earth Enchanted.

No. There are similarities, bits and pieces of physical characteristics but each character is another whole person to me and it wouldn’t feel right to base them on a real person. For instance, Jack has my husband’s middle name “Jackson” and his brown eyes and dark hair, Rhiannon has my daughter’s long wavy auburn hair. Still their personalities are completely their own.

He was bleeding out and I had to choose between sending him to a major hospital two hours away, where he might die before surgery, or sending him to a less qualified hospital thirty minutes away (against his wishes) where they might be able to save him.

Fortunately, the cardiac surgeon on staff at the smaller hospital had studied at a renowned facility in England, and the new procedure he performed saved my husband’s life. He was very lucky, but I never want to have to do that ever ever again. Scary.

      Hi, Carol.

Computers. Everything in the world is literally at your fingertips now. It’s amazing to witness the way technology changes over time, but I believe the computer was the springboard for many other things we take for granted, such as cellphones that do everything but think for us.

    • Brynna Curry says:

That’s an interesting question, Lisa. No one has ever asked that before. This is a hard one to answer. Here goes.

Brynna loved her family more than life itself. Nothing gave her more pleasure than living her own romance story, watching her children grow and spending time with her husband. She loved living in the woods where deer, rabbits and all manner of creatures roamed as free and wild as the kudzu (lol). She was kind and fiercely loyal. Weaving the written word was her passion.
