Alexander Outland: Space PirateSpace…The Funny Frontier

Welcome to the far future, where space travel is normal, hyper-jumps have made the galaxy smaller and accessible to everyone, beings of all kinds and planets trade and intermingle, and piracy is alive and well. And pretty darned good lookin’, if the pirate in question does say so himself. Which he does. In other words, it’s the world of Alexander Outland: Space Pirate.

Trouble’s brewing out in space, and Alexander Outland — the least likely hero in the galaxy — and his eccentric crew have to save the day, despite the fact they’d prefer to take the money and run.

Alexander Napoleon Outland is the best pilot, and ladies’ man, in the galaxy. But Nap, as his friends call him, is more than that — he’s a schemer with a heart of gold he desperately wants to hide, a soft spot for other people’s cargo and his exotic weapon’s chief, and the unerring ability to find the biggest misfit on any planet or space station and somehow join that person onto his crew.

Nap’s not your classic hero, but that tends to make him the right guy for the job…whatever the job happens to be.

And in Alexander Outland: Space Pirate, that job is a lot bigger than Nap and his crew could ever anticipate.

Long-running cons and conspiracies, space battles, military entanglements, dogs and donkeys, cats and birds, flying cars, intergalactic mobsters, and the worst “underwater” escape ever in the history of bad luck combine to make our reluctant heroes wish they’d chosen to sit this one out.

But you’ll be glad they didn’t. Get Alexander Outland: Space Pirate from Night Shade Books and find out why space really is the funny frontier.

Bio

G.J. Koch writes science fiction. Not the hard stuff, though. Because that requires actual scientific knowledge or at least actual scientific research. Knowledge may be power and research may be cool, but they take time away from writing jokes, action, and romance, and being witty in the face of death is what it’s really all about. Hi Gini,

I have been saving your other books for a special treat. I get to have one soon as I recover from tomorrow’s surgeries. I think I ran in to the Tucson chapter of the Gini Koch fan club a couple weeks ago. I was in the Main library and they were all sitting on a bench and along the wall reading your books. Nice bunch offered me a ride to the Phoenix con.

Do you have a street team?

    • Koren C says:

Oh WOW! I am #1. I have never been #1 before. Shows how much I love Gini.

    • Gini Koch says:

Hey Koren! Surgery?!? What surgery? Hope you’re okay and will make a fast and fab recovery! Many {HUGS} and I’m glad the books will be there for you to enjoy! And, no, I don’t have an official Street Team — the Alien Collective IS the street team, in that sense. :-D

  2. Nicole says:

How were you inspired to write this?

    • Gini Koch says:

For this one, Nicole, it was actually the name. I stumbled across it and I thought it was just a totally cool name and it sounded like what a space pirate would be named. A fun, cool space pirate. I started to wonder what his world would be like, and the rest, as they say, is on the pages. ;-D

  3. Nicole says:

Do you forsee writing more in this genre, or is this a one-shot?

    • Gini Koch says:

Oh, I definitely see more adventures for Nap and his crew. I rarely think in one-shots; I’m a series girl, and I definitely plan to continue this series. (Though that’s up to Night Shade as well, LOL)

  4. Roni Lynne says:

    Hi Gini!

Okay, I’ve got a question: your bio says you don’t write “hard” science fiction because that requires too much research. But do write science fiction, don’t you have to do even just a bare minimum, to make it believeable?
I’m asking because I’ve got a story bunny hopping around in my head & it looks like it’s a scifi one. The thoughts of scifi research kinda makes my eyes glaze over though…help!

    • Gini Koch says:

Hey Roni Lynne! For any book you’re writing, accept that somewhere along the way you’re going to have to research SOMETHING. In terms of science fiction, much depends on when and where your book is set. I did minimal research for Alexander Outland, in part because the book is set in the far future so there’s no one who can tell me I’m wrong.

Usually what I try to focus on getting right are things we have right now. Windshields, for example. I actually researched that, even on spaceships, we still call them windshields, which is why I use that term in this book, versus trying to come up with some “futuristic” thing that would mean the same.

Get that story written, and then worry about the facts. LOL You can fix small things, but the overall story has to hang together AS A STORY regardless of the trappings of a genre. And as you write it, it could morph into something different.

As you stumble across things you think you need to research, just let me say that the Internet is a writer’s godsend, and Google Search is your friend. Good luck!

  5. Nicole says:

Did you ‘cast’ the characters in your head as you write (see actors/actresses in your head for them)?

    • Gini Koch says:

I used to, all the time, but now it’s sometimes yes, sometimes no. In my Alien/Katherine “Kitty” Katt series, I don’t, at all, because I see the characters in my mind and they’re themselves, not an actor or actress. Really, in this book, too, I “see” them as their own people, not based on someone else. (Though Nap insists that I mention that I think he should be played by either Ryan Reynolds or Chris Evans.) Though, for Alexander Outland, in the case of Audrey, yes, she is DEFINITELY based on an actress. LOL

My copy of Alexander Outland arrived in the mail the other day but is still unopened (due to my starting a 600-pager right before the mailman showed up). Which part am I going to like best?

Oh Ratty, my Ratty…seeing as it’s you, I have to think you’re going to enjoy the “underwater” scene. But also seeing as it’s you, I think you’re going to enjoy the entire bookie wookie. (And I guess I’ll let you slide on getting to MY bookie wookie AFTER the 600-pager, but it’s a sacrifice on my part. ;-D)

  8. Raonaid Luckwell says:

    Rachel Flesher / Raonaid Luckwell

    • Gini Koch says:

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. I’m your girl when it comes to science fiction non SF buffs can read and enjoy. LOL

Hard SF is focused very much on the science of what’s going on, and focused on being accurate with it, while also writing a good story. Soft SF is focused on the story and tossing in the science as it’s needed. (I’m sure there are better definitions out there, and more accurate ones, too, but this one works for me.)

In this book, as with my Alien/Katherine “Kitty” Katt series, writing as Gini Koch) I take a more Star Wars and Star Trek view — the science stuff is there to facilitate the story, but you’re never going to hear me describe how the warp drives work. I might not even mention that the ship has warp drives, and if I do, that explanation is going to be along the lines of, “Fire up the warp drives, full speed ahead.”

I like to read Hard SF but I don’t enjoy writing it, so I don’t. :-D I can tell you that for many of my fans, Touched by an Alien (the first in my Alien series) was the first science fiction book they’d ever read, and the vast majority of them loved it and have stuck around.

I write what I call non-threatening science fiction. I’m not going to bog you down with the science and mechanics behind how things work (because I, frankly, don’t care, LOL). I’m going to take you on a fun, wild ride that happens to be set on a spaceship or has aliens on Earth.

      • Raonaid Luckwell says:

Thank you! That was the main reason I hesitated. Will be trying out your books then!

Though, my husband might just enjoy the books too since he’s into the sci-fi (he use to read the Star Wars books and he loves Kenyon’s League books). Will have to tell him about your books then.

        • Gini Koch says:

As Ratty above you can attest, I have a lot of male readers. I think if he likes Sherrilyn’s books and the Star Wars books he’ll also like mine. And I do think you’ll enjoy my soft SF rides, too! :-D

  9. Rich A / ratkin (and I'm late on the country part, which is USA) says:

Rachel / Raonaid (gotta love another split personality type!) – By all means, have your husband get to work on the Kitty books. I’ve read them all multiple times, and use them as my default “what can I read that’s fun” choice all the time. And it’s science-less Science Fiction at its finest…The A-C elves have been around since the first book, and it wasn’t until the fourth book that we got even a garbled version of what they really are!

Another question for Gini/GJ/Anita, et. al. :
You talk all the time about how far down the road you ‘see’ and/or roughly plot the Kitty books. How far along are you “seeing” Alexander Outland?

    + 1 another question
    + 1 more math skills
    +28 previous total

    =30

    • Gini Koch says:

All of we split/multiple personality people should unite, because we’ll be legion! ;-D

I’m seeing at least 3-6 books for Nap and the crew right now, but it’s a big ol’ galaxy and there’s lots going on in it, so I’m sure that when I get to book 3 I’ll be seeing farther than 6, ’cause that’s how I roll.

Wow…look at all the points these people have…LOL! I am so behind here.

    Two questions:

    1) How long does it take on average for you to write a 100K book?

    2) What’s your secret for putting together your street team?

Hope things are going very well…I know I’m getting better…even though I’m one big hot flash right now. LOL!

    • Gini Koch says:

Hey Lynn! I can relate to the heat…it’s fully summer over here in Hell’s Orientation Area.

      1. It depends on the book, and what’s going on. I’ve written one in 3 weeks; I’ve written one in 10 years. It all depends. I have no better answer than that. LOL

      2. I didn’t put together an official Street Team (and didn’t even know what that term was until, like, 3 weeks ago, LOL). The Alien Collective formed around the Alien/Katherine “Kitty” Katt series, and, as I understand it, the Collective is my worldwide street team. I also have a robust website with lots of things to read and such, so I’m sure that helped. But the bottom line is, I just love my fans and they love me back. (At least, that’s how I see it. :-D )

Personally, I’m glad you don’t write “hard” sci-fi as my eyes tend to glaze over when trying to understand it. I love character driver stories and you do them so well. Have this one on my wishlist but it will have to wait till I get the next two Kitty books read. I’ve been hording them as I love to be able to read them back to back when possible. Love, love love series books though (and I do understand but it doesn’t mean I like it) I hate the wait between them. I compromise by collecting two or three and then reading them back to back. Now that is heaven!

    • Gini Koch says:

Hey Lisa! I get the “read them all at once” thing, but I’m glad you buy the books and wait. Those who “wait for the series to end” before buying essentially ensure that a series will end MUCH sooner than the author probably anticipated. Sales are indeed the name of the publishing game.

In terms of YA, yes, potentially, but probably not as Gini Koch. My Anita Ensal pen name is playing around with a YA series. When that book will be finished, though, I have no bet. :-D

(And, wow, SOMEONE wants to win the bookie wookie, doesn’t she? ROFL I’ll get to each of your questions in reply. LOL)

  14. Lisa R smalltown, USA

    Planner or pantzer?
DO you follow a “formula” when you write? DO you outline your ideas, write in a specific order

    • Gini Koch says:

I am an extreme linear writer, and quite militant about it, too. I hate the term “pantser” because it insinuates that linear writers such as myself have no plan. We do, it’s just different from how outliners or scene sewers do it.

That said, I start with the title. And then the first line. And when I get to the end…I stop.

Truly. That’s how I do it. I edit and add in along the way, but I don’t put a lot of limitations on myself for what or how I’m going to create.

    +1 total=32

    • Gini Koch says:

When — after years and years of thinking that I couldn’t write (because I don’t outline, and was told I HAD to outline to be able to write) and years and years of listening to the various and sundry voices in my head — a particular set of voices inside my head were so loud and so insistent that the only thing I could do to shut them up was to write them down.

I still love and adore those characters, and I cannot thank them enough, because without them, we would not be having this chat right now.

If, however, you mean what books am I reading or looking forward to reading, the answer is lots and lots and lots.

The Shard Axe and Skein of Shadows by Marsheila Rockwell, as well as all of her Shalla series, and the last several books in Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series top the list, but they are not alone in my giant TBR Pile O’ Guilt And Desire.

    • scratch, you can tell I’m just dying to know, though.

Left at 6:30 AM and did not get back till 10:45PM. We stopped for three meals but it was a long day. My mind must be as numb as my butt.

  19. Lisa R smalltown, USA

If you were selected today for an outer space adventure, would you go?

    +1 total=38

    • Gini Koch says:

      Yes. Absolutely.

This is a safe answer, because the LIKELIHOOD that I’d be asked to go on an outer space adventure is slim.

If I were asked by a race similar to the ones I write about, where they have the easy ways of getting wherever they want to go, my caveat would be to take the hubs, the chicklet, the Canine Death Squad, and the Killer Kitties with me. Because I wouldn’t enjoy the adventure as much without them.

There is nothing better than indoor plumbing and central heat and air, so going back isn’t where I’d want to go. Going forward into the future could be great. Or it’ll be horrible. I write both, so I don’t have a bet either way. So the present day is winning. Plus all my family and friends are here. :-D

Wow! I cannot believe I’m one step closer to finally reading Alexander Outland! I know it’s out already in the states, but here in Australia we’re still waiting. Still! One step closer! :) So, Gini, Are you at all worried about self publishing? I mean, I think you can definitely pull it off, but how long did you have to think about it before you were comfortable with the idea?
    thank you for the contest!

Hey Jesse! Good question, and I see you read the interview over at Adventures in SciFi Publishing, LOL.

I’m excited about it. I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while, but not until I felt I had a big enough fan base to actually support self pubbing a title. There are always nerves and jitters, but at this stage of the game, I don’t think I lose anything by going for it.

I’m fortunate in that I have no back list — all of my titles are still in print and available. So the only way to test the Grand Experiment was with a brand new title. I really think you all are gonna love it. And yes, it’ll be available in ebook and trade paperback and worldwide. (At least, that IS our plan and we are doing all we can to ensure the plan is accomplished.)

I wanted to ask a whole bunch of questions, but my attempts at channelling Gloria Stavers foundered after “What’s your favorite color” and “what do you look for in the perfect girl/guy [choose one].”

For those of us who missed the interview over in Adventures in SciFi Publishing, could you expand on the topic of your foray into self-publishing?

    • Gini Koch says:

It does have a future. I need to get caught up (I’ll wait while we all throw back our heads and laugh) and then I want to finish it up. But it WILL be finished and available. Soon. Soonish. Somewhere in there, I swear. :-D

  34. Sounds like a fun read! I haveen’t come across any humorous sci fi fiction since Robert Aspirin’s Phule series. I think you filled quite a vaccum here!
