The Hunter and The Hunted by Kelley Armstrong

In preparation for the last installment in the stellar Women of the Otherworld series, readers receive a special treat in The Hunter and The Hunted – two stories and the first six chapters of the highly-anticipated last book, Thirteen. “Stalked,” originally published in the anthology My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon, finds werewolves Elena and Clay in St. Louis, on a getaway for some alone time, having left their young twins with the pack. Things seem to be going well, if somewhat dull, until Clay spots a mutt (a werewolf not affiliated with a pack) following Elena around.

“Off-Duty Angel” has Eve, the half-demon witch relegated to the afterlife who now works half the year as an angel bounty hunter, spending the last part of her break off on a mysterious assignment for her long-time lover, Kristof. Eve’s task of following around a shaman begins to lead somewhere when she discovers an intriguing dimensional pocket and some pesky imps who show her respect when they realize who her father is. The imps declare they have found a very important book, and Eve enlists the aid of her angel partner, Trsiel, to help her figure out the significance of this discovery.

As enjoyable as the two stories are, readers may be most interested in being able to get their hands on the first several chapters of Thirteen, which picks up where the previous book, Spell Bound, ends, with the characters regrouping after the bomb blast in New Orleans. Jaime and Savannah, splitting off from the others, get questioned and taken into a police station, where some of their supernatural cellmates lead them to believe something is not quite right. As an added bonus, the prologue features Eve, everyone’s favorite half-demon witch.

Both stories serve as a sort of love-letter to the series, featuring the couple (Elena and Clay) that started the tale and the character who does not typically get as much page-space due to her circumstances (Eve). The two stories also book-end the saga, using the original couples from the beginning and the characters closely connected to the end. The inclusion of the first six chapters of Thirteen serves to heartily whet the reader’s appetite for the book, due 7/24/2012. Despite the fact that the release of the book means that the series ends, this reviewer can hardly wait.
