Promise Me by Tara Fox Hall
Promise Me opens with vampire Danial Racklan escaping his pursuer into the country, headed for the safety of a campsite in the woods. The poison in his blood saps his strength, and he loses consciousness just after pulling onto a path in the woods. Alone in her country home with only the company of her menagerie of cats and dogs, Sarelle McGarran slowly recovers from the sudden, heartbreaking death of her husband. Her plans for a quiet night of reading are interrupted by weird noises outside her house. She explores them to find Danial injured and unconscious on her land. Sarelle rescues him, takes him into her home, and saves his live.
Sarelle is a feisty, courageous, self-sufficient, and independent sci-fi geek with a tender heart and compassion for all life. Although she is still deeply wounded by her husband’s untimely death, she still longs to love again. Discovering that Danial is a vampire does nothing to scare her away from him or make her reconsider giving him her blood to save his life. She is drawn into a world of danger full of supernatural creatures and must discover whether she is strong enough to leave her world behind to become part of his.
Danial is controlling, secretive, dangerous, mysterious, and sexy. He has many enemies and he is powerful among vampire society, which makes him cautious about dating, love, and relationships. But he is unable to resist Sarelle’s courage, beauty, and compassion. Unfortunately, because of who he is and the danger that surrounds his life, his need to keep secrets from, and control, dominate, and possess, Sarelle can be frustrating at times, for both Sarelle and readers.
Every time it seems that Danial’s and Sarelle’s true foe is revealed, another one comes out of the woodwork. It keeps things interesting but also makes it hard to keep up and keep things straight with everyone seemingly out to get Danial and to take Sarelle away from him to possess for themselves.
The pacing is uneven throughout and the novel reads like a contemporary romance that happens to have characters that are vampires, weres, witches, etc., with intense moments of suspense, horror, and violence that at times is bloody. Ending a bit abruptly, it leaves a lot of open questions that will keep readers interested. Overall, Promise Me is a quirky romance with interesting and nicely developed characters, bits of action, suspense, and humor, and steamy romance.
