Author Erin Kellison Release Party and $100.00 Amazon Gift Card Contest

Posted by Site Hostess Tuesday May 1, 2012

Shadow Play by Erin KellisonThank you to Bitten By Books for having me here to celebrate the release of my novella, Shadow Play! It’s the second in the series, but it stands alone as well. Stick around, comment, and be entered to win a $100 gift certificate.

When I was a little kid, I was afraid of the dark. (Okay, I’m still afraid of the dark.) Anyway, I’ve got this memory from when I was four years old. I know I was four because I shared my room with my big sister—we’ll get to her in a sec. I used to lie in bed, staring in terror at the shadows. I swear I could see people in the dark and they were talking to each other. I was petrified that they would notice me and… get me. I’d breathe shallowly, barely blinking, until I was too exhausted to stay awake. Well, one night, I got up my courage to tiptoe over to my sister’s bed to tell her I was scared. She would not wake. I poked her, shook her, wiggled the glasses that were still on her face… and then I bit her finger. She yelled, lights came on. I don’t know if I got in trouble, but I do know that I continued to watch shadows for the rest of my life. I am an expert. I should be awarded an honorary phD for my intense research and nightly fieldwork.

I got stuck on the idea that shadow could walk around by itself. I wondered what a person’s shadow would be like, what would motivate it, what would it be capable of? Fast forward a few decades and you have Eleanor Russo, whose shadow—you guessed it—can walk around independently of her flesh and blood body. Her boyfriend, Dr. Cam Kalamos, is crazy about them both, but things get a little dicey when the team is called upon to investigate the disappearance of a child. Excerpts and cool stuff are over at my website: www.erinkellison.com AND I’ll be back here in July to celebrate the release of my next book, Fire Kissed.

My questions for you today are:
Have you ever been afraid of the dark? If so, what’s scary about it to you? Which scares you more: the explainable things in the dark, or the supernatural?

AUTHOR’S QUESTION: Have you ever been afraid of the dark? If so, what

    • Hi Elaine!
Wow that Sybil story is creeeeeepy. I like it :)

Yes, I have gotten scared by something I’m writing. Happens quite a bit, actually, especially if I’m writing late at night. Drives my husband crazy, hehe.

    1. I have to admit that yes I’m afraid of the dark.
    2. It scares me because I can’t see what’s there.
    3. I would also have to say that the unexplainable things in the dark scare me more than the supernatural.

    My questions for you:
    1. Which of your characters do you identify with the most and why?
    2. If you could become one of your characters for the day who would you choose and why?
    3. If you could have any super power you wanted, what would you pick?

    • Hi Becky!

      1. Which of your characters do you identify with the most and why? Wow that’s tricky. Probably Talia from my first book, Shadow Bound. She started off as an academic and her shy nature is similar to mine. Plus I can really scream like a banshee sometimes :)

      2. If you could become one of your characters for the day who would you choose and why? Kaye Brand, from my upcoming novel Fire Kissed. She’s a fire mage, very powerful, and she’s got some great shoes.

      3. If you could have any super power you wanted, what would you pick? Flying would be very cool. Either that or communicating with corn.

    Erin,
Thanks for coming to BBB and having this great contest. I am no longer afraid of the dark but I remember being terrified when I was younger. I also shared a room with my sister until I was 6. The curtains in our room were almost see through and all the night shadows “played” in our room. We had huge oaks in the yard and bushes under the window that rustled and threw shadows. I was too scared to even get up and go to the bathroom. I suppose that explains why we have blackout curtains in all our bedrooms now! I’m looking forward to reading your book!

Hmmm, a doberman that’s afraid of the dark *may* be a little counter-productive :)

Ever seen a ghost? Nope, but my dad used to tell stories about a ghost living in our attic in North Dakota. It was a friendly ghost.

Ever been to a haunted house? Well, not a “real” one, just the Halloween kind. In my head I think it would be fun to visit a real location that’s supposed to be haunted, but I know I’d probably get scared :)

I was afraid of the dark as a child. Pitch black still terrifies me. I don’t think I could be a contestant on that new SyFy Channel game show where they put you in pitch black dark!

  26. Na S. says:

Hi Erin! Congratulations on the release of SHADOW PLAY.
I am afraid of the dark and the reason why is that it comes down to me not being able to see and relying on my senses…which when combined with my imagination can be unreliable and downright scary. I try not to but in the dark I’m always imagining ghosts and any odd sound puts me on edge. I don’t mind scary reads and movies though. Those are fun :)

I am more afraid of the supernatural than the unexplainable things in the dark. Probably because when confronted with the supernatural I’ll KNOW it’s real and it’s going to take some time to wrap my mind around that. Even scarier is that just like the real world, I imagine there is both good and bad supernatural beings.

My question for you is, is there is one unexplained thing in the world you would like a definite answer for?

Though it does show that you have a great imagination, one I am sure you wished you didn’t have when you were growing up. But all that stressful sleeping and frightened nights paid off! I believe I have seen a couple of posts about your book recently, it is part of a series right? Would you call this YA or not? The cover kinda seems like a YA cover but I am not sure…
The dark never scared me, I liked to hide in the dark or when we would play night games I would be the one finding the darkest shadows to hide in. If you are in the darkest spot everything else shows up really well and you can see what is going on around you, much better advantage. =) And maybe I was that something in the dark others were scared of…at least my little sister was scared of me! Have you ever been afraid of the dark? Nope, I love the dark and I am not scared to walk around either inside or outside in it, the worse thing that can happen is I bump into something or fall, LOL
Which scares you more: the explainable things in the dark, or the supernatural? I am not scared of either. explainable things why should they care me, supernatural things, not sure I believe or disbelieve.

  44. Hi everyone,
I just wanted to say once again a big thanks to BBB and a very special thanks to everyone who bought my book(s) today. It means a lot to me and I really hope you enjoy reading the stories as much as I did writing them.
    Best,
    Erin

  45. Dovile says:

    Hi,

I was scared of dark for a time as I was 5. I’ve watched Stephen King’s Christine, and I was scared to got near my bed, because I believed there might be a witch under it who will grab my ankle if I go near it.

I don’t actually believe in the supernatural, even if like reading about it, so I guess the sounds in the dark would scare me more.

If you could have a supernatural creature as a pet, what would you choose?

    Thanks!

  47. When I was a kid, though, I was terrified by the Nothing and the wolf-creature that served it from Neverending Story. My mom convinced me to adopt an imaginary wolf of my own as a guardian, and that worked against the nightmares. As an adult, however, I’m far more wary of the mundane dangers that lurk in the dark as reported in our local police blotter.

Have you heard of the real-world belief in “Shadow People”? A friend pointed out the wikipedia article to me last year, and I’m fascinated by this modern folkloric take on the age-old fear of shadows and the unknown!

  56. Margay says:

I don’t think I was afraid of the dark so much as I was afraid of the nightmares that would come when I closed my eyes in the dark. For some reason, I went through a terrible period where I had nightmares every night for several weeks in a row. Eventually, they just stopped.

Question: When I was young, my sister tried to freak me out with stories about bigfoot and such (and ended up scaring herself instead!). Did you have any siblings or cousins or friends who tried to do the same to you?

Hi there! I’m alittle late to the party again. God, life really gets in the way sometimes!! The book sounds good, I bought it. I have Shadow Fall in my TBR pile, it’s slowly moving on up. To answer your questions,

I used to be afraid of the dark, but that was a long time ago. I only occasionally get the shivers now, I love to sit in my backyard in the dark and just watch the sky, or sit on my balcony and watch the world go by. I love the dark because of it’s peaceful nature, things are so much more quiet at night, I love it.’

I think I would be more scared of the explainable things, like someome trying to rob you than the unexplainable.

Thanks for the contest, I’m looking forward to checking out the books!!
