Author J. E. Taylor Character Interview and $50.00 Amazon Gift Card Contest

Posted by Site Hostess Friday April 20, 2012

Crystal Illusions: A Steve Williams Novel (Volume 5)JET: Hello and welcome to another JET-Fueled Q&A session here on Bitten By Books.  I have Manhattan’s lovely assistant district attorney Carolyn Hastings on tap.  Welcome and thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk with us today.

Carolyn: Thank you for having me Ms. Taylor.

JET: Can you tell us what types of cases you specialize in?

Carolyn: I work in the Special Victims Bureau and my focus is in the child abuse arena, although I’ve had crossover to both sexual abuse and human trafficking in the past.

JET: What made you choose this focus as opposed to some of the other divisions within the D.A. office?

Carolyn: I know firsthand what it’s like to be abused as a child and I want to protect other children from having to live through the same anguish.

JET: Well, the city of New York is lucky to have you fighting for them.  Now, on a different note, I understand you’ve got a touch of ESP. Can you let us know how this impacts your job?

Carolyn: Well, that isn’t common knowledge, but off the record, I’ve got the ability to read people, which comes in handy when cross examining defense witnesses.  Although some folks I just can’t get a bead on and those are the ones I’ve learned to watch out for.  A quiet mind usually means trouble.

JET: Can you tune in and tune out like a radio station?

Carolyn: Unfortunately, I can’t turn it on an off and I haven’t been able to find any rhyme or reason as to why it starts and stops.  The only thing I’m certain of, is that it’s heightened  when I start having visions, like I am lately.

It’s like some cosmic intervention and when that happens, when everything lines up just so, I seem to have more control over focusing it.   Imagine being in a busy restaurant where everyone is talking to each other.  That’s the normal state of my head during the heightened times, and I’ve learned to ignore the din for the most part, but this affliction isn’t infallible and as I said, sometimes I can’t get a read at all.

JET: I understand the FBI is involved in the Scarlet Psychopath case now.  Have you met the Special Agent assigned to the case?

Carolyn: From your tone, I can tell you’ve had the pleasure of speaking with S.A. Steve Williams.

JET: Yes. I just didn’t know if you had an opinion on the man.Carolyn: Beyond the eye-candy element, he seems to be a sharp cookie.

JET: And?

Carolyn: And I understand he has a unique sense for ferreting out serial killers.  This city needs that right now.

JET: He does along with a plethora of other talents.  On that note, I’d like to thank you for sitting down with me.  Before we wrap this up, is there anything you want to relay to the folks out there?

Carolyn: Young women, take heed – make sure you institute a buddy system when you go out in the city.  Being alone after dark in New York City or any other city is not smart.   Be smart and keep safe.

JET: Thank you Carolyn.

Folks, both Carolyn and I will be around all day, so if you have any questions, shoot.  Remember to let us know who the question is directed toward.  In the meantime, here’s a little about Crystal Illusions:

“Assistant D.A. Carolyn Hastings has an uncanny knack for putting away criminals. With one of the best prosecution records in recent history, her future as Manhattan’s next District Attorney looks certain. But her sixth sense for winning cases threatens to work against her when she starts seeing a string of murders through the eyes of the killer.
With suspects piling up as fast as bodies, and the motives of those closest to her questionable, Carolyn doesn’t know who to trust. When the FBI assigns Special Agent Steve Williams to the case, Carolyn discloses her deepest fear – that the man she loves may be the one responsible for the city’s latest crime spree.
The only thing Steve knows for sure is Carolyn has an inexplicable psychic connection with the killer, and all the victims have one thing in common…a striking resemblance to Carolyn Hastings.

And he knows it’s only a matter of time before this psychopath knocks on her door.”

“Taylor has a strong thriller where every single character has reasonable doubt flashing like a neon sign hanging over them, and right from the beginning you are trying to guess who the killer really is. Gripping, rich and magnificent – crime whodunnits don’t get any better than this!” Author Poppet / Gemma Rice – Author of Quislings, Blindsided, Djinn and Dusan

I love proof-reading! I don’t know if there’s a job that’s just proof-reading, but I’d love to do that! I am currently a stay at home mom, and I’m happy doing just this for now.

    • Viki – As long as I can remember I’ve been able to hear other’s thoughts. Although it’s not consistent. I think at times of high stress it seems to be more prevelent – but I really haven’t studied it enough to see any pattern in when it happens.

When I have free time, I do like a good mystery.

Hmm, could do or would do? If I could do anything, I would want to open up a breakfast place. My sister and I talk about it all the time. I would love to do that!

    2. Bucket lists of things to do are always fun to create. Tell me your top bucket list items of things you want to do before the inevitable.

One of my things is to learn more languages. I love learning different languages. Right now I’m working on Romanian.

I’d love to learn to play an instrument. I played clarinet when I was in elementary school, but trust me that doesn’t or rather shouldn’t count.

Also, this is a silly one, but a while ago I taught myself how to juggle. Which I am more proud of than is really necessary. But I’d love to advance on it, maybe adding a 4th thing or juggling something that’s not ball shaped.

    3. Is there anything you

    • Rae,

I have to be honest – the original concept of Crystal Illusions didn’t include SA Williams – he just decided this was his cup of tea and stepped into the story. With that said, Carolyn may appear in the series down the road, but the next book – Saving Face – focuses on Steve and his struggle at parenting teenage boys in a bit of a rebellion state. Of course there’s also a serial killer that has eluded the police and FBI for a bit in there as well and general mayhem ensues.

As far as facts about characters that never make it to the pages of a book – yes – I have many in my mental file cabinet. :)

Thank you for purchasing Crystal Illusions!

    • J.E. Taylor says:

That’s just as easy as the original answer I gave my daughter – I’d like to write, direct and produce a movie – preferably an adaptation of one of my books.

      • Rae M. says:

That would be cool. And it would be so awesome to see an author actually get to do their own movie! It would be the best movie, just for that fact alone.

  7. Rae M. says:

And for Carolyn, if you weren’t an ADA, what else would you do for a job if you could?

    Thanks!

    • Rae,

Now that I’ve taken my laptop back from Ms. Taylor – I can answer your question – there really is nothing else for me. I love the legal process and seeing justice served. If I had to do it all over again, there isn’t a thing I’d change. However, I wouldn’t mind posing for another painting. That was a very interesting experience and I have to tell you, the look on Randy’s face when he saw the finished product was very worth the initial discomfort.

  8. Raonaid Luckwell says:

    Raonaid Luckwell / Rachel Flesher

    • J.E. Taylor says:

      Raonaid,

I’ve got that issue right now. I have PROMISED my son we would finish his book (Don’t Fear the Reaper – Book One of The Death Chronicles) before I finish Saving Face and I also have a futuristic superhero fantasy that is on the back burner. The character cast from all three books are clamoring for attention and I have to prioritize and in the meantime jot down ideas for the other books when they strike.

What helps is setting publishing dates too – that really drives priorities as well.

  9. Raonaid Luckwell says:

If you could live in a literary world which would you choose (and yes you can say yours) and what your role there would be?

    Total – 63

    • J.E. Taylor says:

Well, I certainly wouldn’t want to live in the world where Survival Games takes place.

This is a tough question and everything that comes to mind is a movie. Like – I’d love to live in Jack Sparrows head for a day.

  10. Raonaid Luckwell says:

Who/what is your favorite literary character?

    Total – 64

  11. Denise Z says:

Thank you so much for the wonderful character interview. I love a character with that taste of intuitiveness that Carolyn appears to have and I certainly look forward to meeting her :)

If I could do anything I absolutely wanted to earn a living, I would be a professional reader and write for recreation what a dream job that would be!

As far as a bucket list, I keep having to start over LOL I want to parachute out of a plane, retired comfortably, read as much as I want, cook for fun, and drive a real big Hummer ;-)

For my question, I don’t see it here – J.E. Taylor what is at the very top of your bucket list? and what do you do to celebrate a new release, if anything, or are you just so relieved you put your feet up and chill? :)

My initial reaction to your question about what do I do to celebrate a new release or just put my feet up and chill was a little huff of laughter.

Honestly, I’ve never really had time to bask in the glow of the accomplishment and chilling is a foreign thought. The only time I really take a moment is when I hold the paperback. It’s nice and shiny and pretty and I get all giggly for about five minutes, then it goes on the shelf and I get back to work on the next thing on my ever growing list of to-dos.

Thanks for swinging by. The idea for Crystal Illusions came about when I was in college many years ago and I actually wrote up an outline for the story. Of course when I found it a few years ago, I was intrigued by the idea and crafted the first draft. Several edits and a complete re-write and it was ready to publish.

Thanks for reading my interview above. The only thing my abilities cause is some insomnia from time to time. Mostly due to the nightmarish qualities of the visions. Other than that, I have no side effects from it.

I understand Steve has some side effects with his abilities but he’s not here to expand on what they are.

    Thanks for being here

  19. Koren C says:

    in life writing or both…

Do you generally make one large goal or many small ones?

    • J.E. Taylor says:

      Koren,

It depends on what you classify as a goal. I set time a schedule of goals, when the next book needs to be published is a small goal. When I’m going to retire from my day job is a big one and I’ve got that mapped out too. So yes, I set goals – small and large.

  20. Koren C says:

What do you do to reward yourself when you reach your goals?

  21. Koren C says:

Do you keep track of random plot bunnies or other ideas as they pop up or do you let them run free and grow until you need them?

    • J.E. Taylor says:

      Koren,

It depends – if I am in the middle of one project, I’ll jot an idea down and then I’ll keep it tucked away. Sometimes I let it percolate until it’s ready to go.

Hi there! The book sounds good, I just bought it at amazon. I’m assuming these don’t have to be read in order, since each is it’s on story, do they relate to each other in other ways?

To answer your questions, I want my job to be a world traveler. I know it’s not an actual profession, but I wish I was born into money so I could travel around and do whatever I wanted.

There are many things on my list…I want to travel to all the standing stones in the world, ancient sites, I want to hike across Ireland and visit all the places people don’t usually go to. Raise some highland cattle in Scotland, visit my ancestral home, travel back in time, go into space.

    • J.E. Taylor says:

Joani – Thank you for buying the book and your assumption is correct. This book is more an outlier in the series and is a stand alone mystery. I hope you enjoy it. As far as audio books, I don’t have any plans in the near future for this, however, I am looking at it as an option for our publishing house.

Time travel – that is a new one and when Sheldon invents it – I’m on it :) Yes I’m a Big Bang Theory fan, so are my kids, even though some of the humor is a little above their heads.

    • Joani,

Privy to state secrets, well that would be nice, but no, beyond knowing the secrets behind SA Williams, nope, nothing like that. At least most of the time.

As for the second half of the question, that’s a little more complicated. I have had the fortune of being able to tell when a wittness is lying on the stand and in most cases how to ferret that out in front of the courtroom and it has done well for my career, but I rely more on my prosecution skills than on my unpredictable mind reading abilities.

I’ve had a blast today and want to thank everyone for their intriguing responses and for those who picked up Crystal Illusions, I thank you and hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Lisa – thank you very much for swinging by – as far as animals go, we’ve had a chihuahua named Gizmo when we were first married and then a few years later we got a German Shephard named Chelsey, but we lived in a condo and when child number two came along, Chelsey got a bit destructive. I ended up giving her to my sister and her husband because they had a house with a yard and she would be much better off there than where we were. I missed her so much but I had to do what was best for my kids and for her.

Lisa D – you’re fantastic! I hope you enjoy the series.

As far as growing up in the city – no. I didn’t. I was always a couple hours from New York or Boston and for the time I lived in California, my family was an hour outside SanFrancisco.

Carolyn grew up in the suburbs of New York – so she is more accustomed to the city.

What about you? Did you grow up in the city, suburbs or the country?

Lisa – wow – not something either of us would like to even think of right now and I’m completely drawing a blank on this.

I would rather see my attributions of mother and wife and family type statements than anything related to career(s) because family is so much more important than anything I could do in the office. However, on a ‘dream’ note it would be nice to see the attribution of Best Selling Author somewhere in that text :) .

    Hi J.E.!
I think it would be really fun to be a interior decorator. I can be creative :)

One of the main thing on my bucket list is to travel the world. I’d be happy to start with Europe. For now I “travel” via stories.

      Na,

Travel is on my bucket list too. I need to get a passport though. Haven’t gotten around to that and just within the last year or so, my husband got his because he was scheduled to go overseas for a work trip. Didn’t pan out – but at least he has a passport. :)

Thank you for stopping in and saying hi!

    • J.E. Taylor says:

      Good Morning Lisa!

Not so much where I grew up – but where I vacationed certainly does. In Mind Games there is a particular place carved right out of my childhood that Chris buys for Jessica. It is a real place that I loved growing up. York Maine is featured in a few of the books too because that’s where we have a summer place and my morning walks along the beach have inspired a great deal of stories. New York City – I’ve had many adventures there due to my day job and conferences and vendors that we work with are stationed in the city. I also have fond recollections of vendor Christmas parties and the adventure of finding your hotel when the lot of you are three sheets to the wind. And of course 9-11. That hit close to home because the folks I came to care about a great deal traveled through the World Trade Center subway stations and their building was on the perimeter of the trade center grounds. No one in my circle of friends were hurt – but they knew an awful lot of the folks that were lost.

So I’ve babbled a bit on the subject of location here – probably because I’ve just had my morning 5 hr energy shot. :)

      Have a wonderful Sunday!

  34. Lisa D USA says:

To answer your question I grew up in the country. I’ve lived in no bigger city than Stillwater Oklahoma when I was in college to recieve my BS and MS
I was just in the college crowd so I really never wandered around the place.
I did know the strip because that is where all of the college bars were!!

    • J.E. Taylor says:

Lisa – I grew up in the suburbs of Hartford – on the edge of what people in Connecticut call “the country”. I guess when someone says City to me, I think of New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington DC and such – Big cities.

My grandparents lived in Hartford, so I was exposed to city living with them – the small houses on small stacked lots – and everything close by. I worked in Hartford for many years – from the time I went to college on. Now I’m in another city for work – but it still doesn’t compare to New York.

Thanks for sharing. Good luck with the contest.

    Hi,

    1) I wish I could find a job that wouldn’t feel like work to me. Maybe a professional TV/movies reviewer:)

    2) To read all the books currently in my house and also those still on my wishlist, also to see other countries, like France, Italy and lots of others, to learn at least to understand French and Spanish, to have a couple of children – there are lots of things I’d like to do before I croak:)

    3) I’d like to know if Carolyn’s sixth sense works only for murders or if she uses it for everyday situations?

I’d also like to know if you could pick a song that best describes you and your life what would it be?

    Thanks!

    • Dovile,

Thank you for swinging by today. As far as my sixth sense, well you might want to ask my boyfriend about that. He hates it when I can read him, although sometimes it’s not the mind reading ability that tells me what’s on his mind, sometimes it’s just transparent in his eyes. Don’t tell him I said that though. He’d like to believe he isn’t an open book and who am I to disillusion him. :)

    • J.E. Taylor says:

      Dovile,

Wow – what song best describes me and my life – hmmm. I had to bring up my Itunes list for this because the only song that popped into my head was

“All I want to do is have some fun”…and then there’s these two:
      I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing…and of course Millionaire…

I think that pretty much sums me up in three titles. :)

      Lisa – bless you. :)

This past year it has been very hard to carve out writing time, however, now that my daughter has her license, I’ve seen the demands of carting her around lessen a bit, which helps.

I carry my little mini-notebook with me when I take the kids to their activities, and in most cases there’s no connectivity – so I get a little done here and there. Of course sometimes those sessions are used for reading submissions – so it’s a toss up on whether I’ll get anything written during the week.

Weekends are when I’m most productive – which means the family doesn’t get a great deal of attention. I’d like to find a balance and ideally – I’d like to cut back on the day job and spend that time writing – but right now, that’s a pipe dream. At least until my kids are out of college. :)

Back again. I drove 48 miles round trip to pick up my eldest grandson from the court house by order of the judge in my eldest daughters divorce. I did
all the FFA stuff, 4-H, cheerleading, basketball, and etc. that my girls
were in and it’s starting all over with the grandchildren. LOL
Which one would you choose that you enjoy the most? Your children or the
    grandchildren.

    • J.E. Taylor says:

Well, I don’t have grandkids yet – so I can’t honestly answer that. I have a feeling it is a very different experience because you can spoil the daylights out of them and then send them home. In otherwords, you don’t have to live with the consequences of the spoilage. At least that’s what I see in my parents – all the joy and none of the heartache.

I’m looking forward to that – but again, I don’t think it will be for another six years at minimum. My daughter has to meet someone first and I’m hoping she holds off till after college. :)

I wanted to take a moment to thank Bitten By Books for hosting me this weekend. I have had fun answering questions and letting one of my alter egos have the floor from time to time.

Thank you to everyone who commented and those that bought my books I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed writing them.

    Until next time,
    Ciao.

My oldest girl is 32 and youngest is 29. They both have good jobs and since
all of the surgeries(knee, fused neck and just resently my fused back but the still could not fix it correctly I’m still in pain. Oh well I take care
of the grandkids while they work. I can’t really spoil them since I would have to pay for the consequences! Yuck! I do let them get by with things the girls would never have done. LOL I have 3 boys and soon to be another little girl. I love them all but they have me coming and going. LOL At least they do go home and I have my free time to spoil my 3 poodles 1 choc lab and 3 cats! The standard poodle is most jealous of everything that comes near me, even the grandkids. It’s a circus in my home.
    That’s enough about me.
