Aimery Duncan has given up his pampered life on his family’s sugar cane plantation to serve in the Allied Kingdom’s army. Preferring anonymity, he is not happy when Captain Kree Fawr appoints him as Field Marshall, and neither are the officers he is now commanding. But, what the Captain wants, the Captain gets and he is smart enough to realize that Duncan has what it takes to win the war against the Descendants.
Faelan Foley is a shapeshifter and she knows that is the only reason she is not treated as poorly as the other Descendant women. Still, she longs to have her opinions matter and to be able to read and write, skills Descendant women are denied. When she sees a chance to infiltrate the Allied Kingdom’s camp disguised as a harmless dog, she grabs it. It gets even better when the Field Marshall himself takes her in. But Faelan never dreamed she’d fall in love with the enemy or that he would be the one person who could give her everything that she has ever wanted.
Unbound Heart is the second book in Jane Atchley’s Garrison Hearts series but this book can stand on its own. It is a nice bonus, though, to have the background of some of the prominent characters from the first book, Warring Heart, who play a role in Aimery and Faelan’s story as well. While Unbound Heart is a thoroughly engaging love story, as with the first book, some of the background story involving the legends and mythologies surrounding the main characters was a little hard to follow. Still, it did not detract from the story at the very heart of it all or the fiercely independent heroine who captured the handsome hero’s heart as well as my own. Faelan Foley, I am a fan.
