Guardians Russell and Durk are stuck on a plane on their way to their next mission – finding the newest Guardian – and while they do not resent their assignment, they are quite unhappy about flying, which leaves them weaponless in case of an emergency. As the two men quietly discuss their assignment, they realize the plane is going down, certain to crash. Once the plane settles on the ground, Russell and Durk discover only one other survivor, a young girl who cannot talk, but they sense some Guardian in her. Is she the one they were charged with helping?
Annabelle has not spoken in years, ever since she and her parents were abducted and tortured. While she has some Guardian traits, like the ability to heal quickly, she also has something darker hidden away inside. Trusting others is difficult, but she recognizes Russell from a dream she had many years ago, and she allows him to help her from the plane and willingly goes with him in search of shelter.
This was an exciting book, filled with ancient rituals and dark secrets that were shattered once the Guardians appeared. The battles were realistic but not overpowering, and I enjoyed Russell and Annabelle’s deep connection to one another. I also appreciated the sense of loyalty the Guardians possessed, and their willingness to fight to the death to protect one of their own. Awaited definitely held my attention and I enjoyed reading it very much.
