Caught Forever Between by Adrian PhoenixThis terrific short story set in the world of the author’s Hoodoo series packs a solid punch into its thirty pages. Cass Danzinger wants revenge—her lover and mentor in the tattoo business, Alex, was shot in the head in their shop. The police seem to be dragging their feet about finding the culprit while Alex lies in a coma. His doctors tell Cass that Alex may never wake again, and if he does, he will not be himself. Deciding to take matters into her own hands, Cass gets the word out on the street that she seeks justice. When the mambo Madame Gabrielle LaRue shows up, Cass learns that justice may have a high price tag.

While Caught Forever Between has a darker tone than the novels of the Hoodoo series typically do, the approach works quite well given both the shorter length and implicit dangers of the forces the characters invoke. Cass’s ability as an Intuitive, an artist who can see inside of others and symbolize what she sees, gives her insight but not necessarily knowledge, results in her often riding the line between interpretation and certainty—a dangerous place for life and death decisions. All fans of Phoenix’s Hoodoo series will want to grab this fabulous return to the world via two of the secondary characters while waiting for the next book.
