Within the Flames by Marjorie M. Liu
Hiding beneath the streets of New York in an old subway tunnel system lives a young woman with an old secret and enormous power that she is terrified to use. The witch that murdered her parents is searching for her, and Lyssa lives with the fearful certain knowledge that someday she will have to face the evil. But she won’t be doing it alone. Dirk & Steele, a paranormal investigative and security agency, has been engaged to find and protect her, assigning Eddie to the case. He carries his own secrets and emotional damage, along with the power of fire. Two wounded, lost and fiery people come together in a desperate search for truth. Both carry secrets and the ability to heal each other—if only they can survive what’s ahead.
I’ve long been a fan of the Dirk & Steele novels, but they have been a bit stale of late—until now! The novels are written by different authors, and Ms. Liu has taken it to a new level. This is more than a love story; it’s about justice, redemption and healing. Lyssa and Eddie are complex, bold and intriguing characters. In the hunt for justice, they find themselves and then each other. There is mystery, romance, trials and tragedy, smoldering passion and many a surprise along the way.
