Author Alix Rickloff Release Party and $50.00 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

Posted by Site Hostess Thursday January 5, 2012

Heir of Danger (The Heir of Kilronan)PLEASE NOTE: The contest portion of the Alix Rickloff Event is now closed. The winner is Beth M.

Take one part Regency era elegance and grace. Add a huge helping of dangerous Fey magic. Toss in a jilted woman, a magical stone, a shadowy group of conspirators, and a family torn apart by murder and what do you get?

Heir of Danger – The final book in the Heirs Of Kilronan series!

Set in 1816 Ireland, my latest foray into the world of Other, humans bearing the blood of the Fey, leads us to the mysterious head of a conspiracy thought long since

destroyed and the final battle for control over King Arthur’s soul.

Here’s the back cover blurb:

“After seven years outrunning enemies, friends, and his own soul-crushing memories, Brendan Douglas is risking everything on a desperate mission. He has vowed to thwart the evil mage Máelodor’s plans to unlock the past and reshape the future . . . unfortunately the precious treasure  that is the key to success lies with a woman he jilted seven years before.

When her golden-eyed childhood hero abandoned her at the altar—disappearing in a storm of magic and mayhem, destruction, betrayal, and disaster—Elisabeth Fitzgerald struggled to overcome her humiliation and loss. Finally, she has found a new fiancé and a comfortable future. Then, the one man she thought she would never see again appears—among her wedding guests. Brendan Douglas has returned.

It’s not just that Elisabeth is promised to another; Brendan knows he is drawing her into terrible danger. But he cannot resist the bewitching, brave, wholly unexpected woman his youthful nemesis has become. He promised to sacrifice everything, but is he willing to sacrifice Elisabeth?”

I’ve always enjoyed bending the rules to create my cross-genre blend of historical and paranormal. And with this series I was able to add Arthurian legend, an Irish landscape, and a cast of characters that include a few surprises for both the reader and the race of Other themselves.

So, I’m raising a glass in celebration of new beginnings and new books and toasting a farewell to good friends and a series I’ve loved writing.

Sláinte!

And now I’m tossing the conversational ball to all of you. The holidays are behind us and  now there’s nothing but the long empty doldrums of winter ahead—my favorite time of year! It’s quiet, stress-free, and; what’s better than curling up beside a woodstove with a cup of cocoa and a good book?

So, what’s your favorite time of year—the chill of January ski slopes or the sultry heat of beach season? And why?

My question to Alix: Even though your books are fiction do you at any time put elements from your life in them? Wether it be something you saw while out and about or something in your own personal life? (+1)

    • Hi Kristina! Thanks for being my official first guest to the party!

I love the beach, though I like the pool more. Not a big fan of sand in my bathing suit. :)

As to real life making its way into my books, I plead the fifth. But I will tell you that as a child I had a dog named Killer. Unfortunately, last I knew, he was not leading a secret double life.

  6. It’s always been a toss-up which I liked more – historicals or sci-fi/fantasy. So what better than a mash-up between the two?

My first attempt at blending the two, DANGEROUS MAGIC, came out in October from Carina Press. It was a book of my heart and I love it, but it’s a toe in the water compared to the stories involving the world of the Other, which are far heavier in the swashbuckling sword and sorcery realm.

Would you ever add Welsh legends to the Arthurian ones(lots of interesting connections there), or Welsh landscapes instead of the Irish ones you already use?

    +1 question

    • Thanks for stopping by, Ilona. A beautiful name, by the way.

I’ve always loved the Welsh legends and as a child read Lloyd Alexander’s take on them with his Prydain series over and over. I could definitely see me using these as jumping off points for future stories.

As to a Welsh setting, I do spend a few scenes deep in the Cambrian mountains and Daigh, the hero of the second book in the series was a warrior of the doomed Prince Hywel’s once upon a time.

    • Isn’t spring a beautiful time of year? I’ve always said my favorite flower is the crocus because it’s the first one up when everything else is still brown. Just about the same time the spring peepers start peeping in the marsh behind my house which I’ve always said is my favorite sound ever.

  9. Julie T says:

I do love all the seasons–no, really! Favorite…ah, at the moment I’ll say mid-spring. Because I am ready for a showy springtime wildflower display.

    • Julie,
You sound a lot like me. I always seem to love the season I’m living the best. Right now, I’m definitely a huge fan of the long, quiet days of mid-winter with holidays behind us and nice stretch of nothing ahead. But come springtime, I’ll be telling people spring is the best with all the forsythia and crocuses in bloom and the weather finally warming up. :)

Usually I love writing in my office, a wonderful cozy room that my husband recently redecorated just for me, But when it’s really cold and yukky, there’s nothing better than snuggling up on our living room couch in front of the woodstove with my laptop.

    • My husband loves cold and snow and would happily move as far north as I would let him. I like things a little warmer myself, though I’m definitely someone who needs definite seasons. I’m a Maryland girl so we get snow in winter, sticky humidity in summer, and beautiful falls and springs.

I get way more done during the months of January – March than at any other time of the year. When everyone else is complaining about the winter blahs, I’m smiling ear to ear. :)

    Comment on this week

    • Hi Terri!

My books are set during the Regency, so most of my research is focused on getting the historical aspects of that time period correct. I read biographies and diaries from the era, have bookshelves devoted to maps and travelogues and architecture and dress. I spend a lot of time on-line searching out details, and use the wonderful and talented sister of the Beau Monde to fill me in when I’m completely stumped.

The paranormal world is my own creation. I might pull from legends and lore here and there, but the bulk of it comes from my own imagination. The hard part with that is staying consistent from book to book as the universe expands and grows more complex. To combat this, I’ve begun a notebook to keep my facts straight. It’s amazing how often I refer back to it.

It’s great to have one of my readers from south of the equator join us! I love wandering the beach in search of shells and sea glass. I’ve tried laying on a blanket in the sun but after about ten minutes I get bored and need to be up and exploring or dipping my toes in the water.

  17. Raonaid Luckwell says:

Many people liken authors to other authors. Which author would you liken your work too?

    42

    • That’s a really tough question. I don’t think I’ve ever likened my work to another author’s. I did have a reviewer recently compare me to Victoria Holt which was just about the best and most flattering compliment I’ve ever been given since I cut my romance teeth on Holt years ago and absolutely adore her books.

      • Definitely a complement. I lived and died for the Victoria Holt books during the 70′s(telling my age here). The librarians would automatically add my name to the wishlist for them.

    -) (+01) – Hiya folks, Happy 2012! :)

Well, firstly, it sure is hard to believe that the holidays are over, but they do feel like they were 20 years ago already… but anyway, my favorite season – that would be Baseball season (let’s Go Mets!). ;)

As for actual time of the year, I think my optimum weather is spring or fall. It not usually too hot or too cold. Maybe you still need a coat, but you aren’t probably bundled up. It’s why summer, sure, you get out and stuff, but it can just be too hot (all the more worse if you have no a/c), and winter, while I like cold, I don’t travel well in snow. Though, this winter has been warmer than normal (hense no snow, well, since the strange so called Halloween blizzard the northeast had), so I’ve been liking it. Ah, love it when the weather is utterly screwed up! LOL

Oh, and if I can add… just love that cover. Mighty fine cover there. :)

    • Hi Lois! Happy 2012 right back at ya!

I’m more of a football lover myself. I start to salivate about mid-August thinking about the start of the season and go through 2 or 3 weeks of withdrawal after the Super Bowl.

  19. Rae M. says:

My favorite season is easily Winter, followed really close by Fall. I love snow, even though we haven’t had much yet this season. I love when we get tons of snow. It’s so peaceful and it gives a person the perfect excuse not to go anywhere or do anything!
But I think one of my biggest reasons is that I hate, hate, hate the heat (and humidity)!

Now I have no idea how on earth I have missed this series! Although I suppose it’s a plus that I won’t have to sit and drool waiting for the next one. However I really have to have these now.

So, I’m curious, do you speak either Welsh or Irish? Or any others?

When you first started writing the series, did you picture the ending how it ended up, or did it change?

    • I wish I knew how my books will end when I begin them. Other than happily, the details tend to be pretty vague when I start. I was probably less than a hundred pages from the end of HEIR OF DANGER before I knew what was going to happen. And Killer? Well, he surprised me completely!

As for the audiobook question, there are no current plans to have the books picked up for audio, though that would be completely fantastic if it does happen. But my Carina Press book DANGEROUS MAGIC that came out in October is available on Audible, so that might be a great choice for you.

    • Hi Alina!

I’m right there with you on the couch and the book, though I have a cat not a dog. Still it’s just about heaven this time of year.

I have oodles of authors that I love who inspired me to write. I dedicated HEIR OF DANGER to four of them; Mary Stewart, Jane Austen, Lois McMaster Bujold, and Rosamunder Pilcher. Four hugely different styles of writer, but I read their stuff over and over and never get tired of it. They are absolutely wonderful!

The adult market is definitely a challenge, but right now it’s my belief that the YA market is just as hot if not hotter. It’s an amazing time for YA, and the books coming out are just phenomenal. Unfortunately, I’m not sure I have the authentic teen voice the young adult market requires.

      1) After pondering this one a long time, I’m not sure I can see spending a day with any of them. Most of my most well-loved characters lead very dangerous and exciting lives which may be a bit too much for a quiet little writer like myself. Eloise from Lauren Willig’s Pink Carnations seems to have the most in common with me. I love nothing better on a road trip than a good dusty museum or two. :)

3)4 people on an elevator? Jane Austen (that’s a gimme), Richard III (good? bad? And I really want to solve that little princes mystery), Magneto from the X-Men (he could probably fix the elevator for us), and my paternal grandmother (I never met her but have heard so many stories, I’d love to spend time with her).

      4) Top 3 on the Bucket List – Travel. Get over my morbid fear of flying (this would be a big help for the traveling bit). And last but certainly not least – Get my house’s bathrooms renovated and redecorated.

      5) What inspires me to write? I think it’s less inspiration and more compulsion. I write every day, and even if I had no editor waiting for the finished product or anyone reading my books but my mother, I’d still write because it’s what I do.

There! I think I got them all! Yay me!! :)

I can relate to cozying up with a good book in the winter, drinking tea and hot chocolate…but spring is probably my favorite because I’m itching to get out in the garden, and the little bits of green get me all excited:) I start taking walks and finding wildflowers. It really is a cool time of year.

Somehow I missed your series, but it sounds wonderful– I’ll have to start with the first one though, but at least I won’t have to wait for the others!

    • Spring walks are always wonderful with the temperature comfortable but not cloying and the new green everywhere.

I’m the same when it comes to series, Brenda. I have to read them in order otherwise I feel like I’m doing something slightly wicked and unsavory.

I like summer time because it is warm and you don’t have to wear alot of clothes and you can go to the beach and layout. Are there any generes you would like to try to write? Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com

    • Hi Victoria!!

I confess I’m a terrible sun goddess and always have been. I just can’t lay still long enough. I rest there for about five minutes before I get antsy and have to be up and doing something. My favorite part of summer though is being able to wear flip-flops every day. I can’t wait to shed my socks and shoes when the weather warms up.

Yay! Congrats on the release! Looking forward to getting a copy.

My favorite time of year is fall. I dont like really humid or cold weather. And I love to see the leaves change.

My question – If you could witness any historical event past, present or future what would it be and why?

    • Wow! More really hard questions – let me fortify myself with a new cup of coffee and a piece of danish this time around. :)

      1) Witness to what historical event? – VE Day! I’ve always been interested in the 1939-1945 time period both in fiction and non-fiction. That being said, I would love to see the celebrations and the relief sparked by the end of WWII.

      2) Shifters – I love the idea of being able to transform into something else. Though it seems all shifters change into only cool romantic things like dragons or wolves. No one shifts to become an unromantic dung beetle or a mole or something equally icky.

      3) Least Favorite Part – Wow! I can’t think of too many things I don’t like about writing. Although the hardest part about writing is sending your baby out into the world alone. You hope readers will love it as much as you do.

      4) What I wish I knew – That getting published isn’t the last step – it’s the first. And the road can be long, tiring, and rutted with potholes.

I’m loving the idea of a paranormal Regency. It’s a new world for me but one I’ll happily visit. Congratulations on your book release!

My favorite season is Spring, although I happen to like all the seasons I live in. That could be because it’s pretty mild here all year round. It’s great for getting outdoors but not so hot that I break out in a sweet or too cool that I need to bundle up. Plus the flowers start blooming which is a very pretty sight.

    • My favorite childhood book has to be The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. My mother and I read this together when I was just learning to read. She would read a page then I would read a page. We did a chapter a night. It’s one my most cherished memories and my mother and I still share a love of books. She’s been my biggest influence and fan over the years.
