Blood on the Bayou by Stacey Jay
Blood on the Bayou, the exhilarating second installment in the absorbing Annabelle Lee series, picks up the morning after the events at the end of book one. Annabelle has a dream in which she sees the dead girl, Grace, and talks to an old fairy that refers to his kind as the Slake, telling Annabelle she needs to leave town. When she wakes from her dream, Annabelle discovers Tucker, one the men with the ability to make themselves invisible, sitting at the end of her bed. Despite his charm, Annabelle tells Tucker to leave, and hurries to get ready for her meeting with Hitch, her FBI agent ex, whom she has promised to help try to determine what seems to be going on in a secret cave that his partner got killed for investigating.
At their meeting, Annabelle learns from Hitch that the dock workers may be skimming from shipments, taking advantage of those not immune to fairy venom as they are. While driving to the docks in order to try to infiltrate the group, Annabelle comes face to face with the old male fairy she saw in her dream, who once again tells her to leave town. A swarm of fairies then tries to overturn Annabelle’s truck, and she discovers that she can use her newly-acquired magic to both kill the fairies and right the truck back on its wheels. Even though she manages to convince one of the dock workers to let her in on their scam, not everything else falls into place quite so easily. With her personal entanglements becoming as complicated as her professional, Annabelle must balance several situations in order to solve some mysteries and protect those she cares about.
This fabulous novel’s breakneck pace and action never overwhelm the character development or fascinating world-building. Annabelle’s realizations about herself mesh with the discoveries she makes about the people around her whom she thought she knew. More information about the fey society and its impact on the humans of the area adds depth and interest to the tale. The author’s smooth prose style emphasizes the seemingly effortless narrative flow that likewise serves to sustain the suspense level. Readers will find themselves completely engrossed, both racing to the end to find out some answers yet dreading the last pages, knowing they must then wait for the next book and the continuation of Annabelle’s story. Urban fantasy and paranormal romance readers alike should embrace this captivating series.
