A Promise of Amber by Evanne Lorraine
Being half fae and half wolf has made Amber’s life a living hell. Always the outsider, she kept to herself and attempted to stay out of trouble, although trouble always seemed to find her no matter how hard she tried to avoid it. When the Seaview Pack’s compound comes under attack by goblins, she is one of very few left alive in the aftermath. Under the scrutiny of Hunter, the Alpha of the Treeland Pack and her promised mate, she finds herself withering in fear…and something else, too. With the help of Hunter’s second, Tru, they’re determined to not only put the Seaview Pack back on its feet but also to help Amber find a way to be more comfortable in her mate-to-be’s presence. That solution is one that will shock them all to their cores.
Having been forced to hide her fae side all her life, Amber has no control over her power. When it comes, it comes of its own accord and on its own terms, making things often more difficult than they should be. Much like Scarlet in the previous installment, Amber is an enjoyable character, despite her fears and insecurities. In too many women, their pasts make them weak; with Amber, it helps bring out her uniqueness while not making her into a helpless female, either. Her one downfall is her tendency to always blame herself and remove herself from the situation before anyone can tell her differently. While I do understand why she is this way, it can be a bit trying at times.
Hunter and Tru are two sides of the same coin. Hunter is pack Alpha. He is strong, confident, and domineering to the extreme at times. He is aggressive but he is also caring and protective as well. Tru, on the other hand, is more cerebral, intelligent, and calm. He’s passionate but less possessive than Hunter. As friends, and as Alpha and his Second, they balance each other well. In combination, they form the perfect sort of safe haven for a wolf as damaged emotionally as Amber is.
I was very curious how the competition between Hunter and Tru for Amber’s affections was going to play out. And while the ending was a bit predictable (you know there has to be a happy ending for all, right?), it still caught me a bit by surprise with how it was handled, giving a more than satisfying ending to their story. This sequel to A Taste of Scarlet was just as enjoyable and entertaining as the first. I would highly recommend this series to any lover of hot, steamy love stories and especially for those who adore shifters of any kind. I also look forward to many more stories in this budding series as well.
