Interview:
Hi Caitlin!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Caitlin’s upcoming release Second Skin.
BBB: What do you find the most challenging aspect of writing?
CK: Copyediting a manuscript, definitely. Once I turn in line edits, I’m ready to be finished with the book, and I have to read it again and edit for grammar. Not to mince words, it’s deadly dull but it has to be done.
BBB: What is the most rewarding aspect of writing for you?
CK: Personally, when a scene comes together just right and everything works on all the levels–plot, character, theme–that it should. Professionally, when I meet readers and get to share their reactions to the story. That’s just wonderful.
BBB: What or who was your muse that got you started writing?
CK: I’ve been writing since I can remember, but I specifically knew I wanted to write fantasy when I read Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman in college. The urge to explore the fantastic was a real driving force behind my novels and still is.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle or Sony Digital Book Reader
to the environment?
CK: Well, honestly, I like the feel of books and won’t replace them with ebooks any time soon. But you can load text documents onto the reader and the savings on printing and paper have enormous implications. I actually got my agent one for Christmas…she loves it.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
CK: Really, the technology is far too new to predict long-term impact on the printed word, so I’m going to reserve judgment. In five years,we’ll have a better sense of the new model e-readers are bringing to publishing.
BBB: Do you consider your work more paranormal romance or urban fantasy and what do you like about your chosen genre over the other?
CK: I write speculative fiction. I don’t really consider my work one genre or another, besides fantasy. Urban fantasy/paranormal romance is mostly a marketing decision. That said, my work is usually plot or character driven rather than relationship driven. I guess that makes me a bit more UF.
BBB: Which of your two series is your favorite?
CK: Oh gosh, that’s like asking me to pick a favorite child. Black London has a tremendous amount of depth and breadth in its worldbuilding, as well as a hero that I adore. But the Nocturne City
books are gritty and dangerous, a real homage to the pulp novels I read as a kid. I like them both for very different reasons.
BBB: Can you tell us what your next release (s) will be? And do you have stand alone titles forthcoming? And of course we would love to know how many more books are scheduled in your series!
CK: My next release is Second Skin, Nocturne City #3 on March 3rd, 2009. Then Street Magic
drops June 2nd and that’s the first Black London novel. Black and White
, my co-authored superhero novel with Jackie Kessler, releases June 23rd and I’m in several anthologies this year as well as having two more novels drop in the fall.
Luna’s story was always meant to be told in six books, and Book 5 releases in September. The Black London novels have more of an infinite feel because they lend themselves well to spin-offs. I’m currently contracted for two, Street Magic in June and Demon Bound in December, but I’d love to write more of that world. I’ve also recently sold a YA series that’s a trilogy of steampunk fantasy called The Iron Codex, which is forthcoming in 2010.
BBB: Night Life is such an interesting start to a series, how did you decide on witch and were siblings? And are you going to do a split off series on the sister and magic as the primary characteristics?
CK: I really wanted Luna to have a foil, someone very grounded and normal, who didn’t believe in violence and survival of the fittest but at the same time could stand up to a raging werewolf. Thus, Sunny is a cheerful, pacifistic soul who happens to also be a kick-ass witch. The idea of Luna being the only non-witch in her family also worked in terms of making her an outsider.
There are currently no plans for a Sunny series but she is the narrator of a short story in the Strange Brew anthology a little later this year.
BBB: How do you feel being the youngest member of Team Seattle?
CK: I believe I’m actually the mascot. I expect my fur suit and giant prop head to arrive any day now.
BBB: Does it drive you insane being called Kit Kittredge, American Girl?
CK: Compared to what Mark Henry calls the rest of Team Seattle, it’s a blessing.
BBB: Does the fact that you are one of the younger powerhouses in the genre bring any additional pressure?
CK: I do feel something of a need to hold up my end. I had a lot of success very early and if Hollywood child actors have taught us anything, it’s that instant success can bite you in the ass. I never want to stagnate in my craft, so I really do strive to make each novel I write better than the last, and I always try to learn from writers who have more years in the industry than me–their experience is invaluable.
BBB: What inspired you to begin your highly-anticipated YA series?
CK: I really love steampunk fantasy, and I’m a big fan of H.P. Lovecraft, and the two things just collided in my head and I heard my heroine’s voice speaking the first line of the novel. I know that sounds a little crazy but sometimes books come from just that small a spark and a random coincidence. I just wanted to play in a steampunk world to relax a little after finishing two back-to-back Nocturne City novels, and I ended up with an entire trilogy.
BBB: Which of your characters is closest to your heart, so to speak?
CK: Jack Winter from Street Magic, definitely. Jack has been living in my head since I was a sophomore at university, and he’s the most vivid protagonist I’ve ever created. He’s so easy to write because he will sincerely not shut up, even when I’m ready to be done for the day. Plus, if he were real I’d want to go have a drink with him, which is the ultimate litmus test for a character.
BBB: What is your favorite paranormal fiction book of all time?
CK: Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman.
BBB: What do you like to do in between all the time you spend writing?
CK: I watch movies, I read a lot, I like to bake and I do photography as a hobby so if I’m not at my computer I’m usually out wandering around with a camera. And I have two cats, so they keep me busy.
BBB: What did you do before you became a writer? Do you write full time?
CK: I was a retail clerk, a Hot Dog on a Stick girl and an MMORPG designer for ArenaNet, who make the GuildWars games. Being a game designer was a sweet gig by many standards but it wasn’t my passion, so I quit about 14 months ago to write and I haven’t looked back.
BBB: Hairy scary Werewolf or Zombie? If you HAD to become one of these creatures, which one and why?
CK: I love werewolves. I don’t find them scary in the least. I’d definitely be all right with being hairy a few days a month in exchange for Wolverine senses and super-strength.
BBB: Do you have any pearls of wisdom you would like to share with our readers here today?
CK: Hah! I’m lucky to get oysters of wisdom on my best day, never mind pearls. I would say write and read what you’re passionate about, and you’ll never steer yourself wrong. That’s the best writing advice I ever got (other than “sit your ass down and type”), so I’ll pass that along.

I picked up the first book on a whim. Finished it that night and made sure I had you on my watch list after that.
_Night Life_ was intriguing to me on many levels but most of all on the uniqueness of the world. You had enough twists and turns to keep my attention. Fabulous book and I can’t wait to get the next!
_Pure Blood_ carried things forward nicely.
Rachel, I’ll be twittering this.
Thanks for a great interview. I posted a link on my Facebook!

I’m afraid I am behind in the Nocturne Series or I’d have questions I wasn’t afraid of the the answers to…LOL
Good morning, Since I haven’t had a chance to pick up your books just yet, let
Hi Caitlin! Its so exciting to have you here!
1) if you had to spend immortality anywhere, would you stay in Seattle or spend it somewhere else?
And I love the photo! Is that the one you decided to use as your author’s photo?
Rachel, I twittered and posted to Mark, dakota and paranormal monday yahoo groups.
Hey everybody! I wanted to mention that the photo was created by Cherie Priest.
A BIG thanks to Caitlin for popping in today. She’s in NY and will be by as she has time throughout today and tomorrow.
Have fun and enjoy the interview! Please ask as many questions as you like!
Caitlin, I’m curious: when you first started writing, what did you find was the hardest part of getting published? Completing the book? Finding an agent?
I’m a writer and, although I haven’t gotten a novel published yet (finding an agent seems to be the hardest part for me), I’ve had some stories published, including one in an upcoming anthology that I’m sharing with Anya Bast, C. E. Murphy, Katherine Kerr, and Elaine Cunningham.

There are people who call themselves witches; do you use any of their lore or customs in your series? I know that I’ve read Nightlife (I remember the Luna/Sunny relationship) but alas my sieve-like memory I don’t remember much (OTOH that means that I can re-read it and enjoy it again).

I’ve enjoyed all your books so far and look forward to many many more
What is it about steampunk that attracts you? I’ve been hearing more and more about the genre lately and was wondering about that from a writer’s perspective.
I’m posting on my LJ http://zita-h.livejournal.com/
Steampunk meets H.P. Lovecraft?! Wow. Now that intrigues me!
Hi Caitlyn! I’m with Chris – that’s quite a combo to hook readers, esp. since you’re a Neil Gaiman fan too. Love to read your books.
I’ve enjoyed Luna’s first two books, and I especially like the cityscape you’ve created. I was wondering, with your packed publishing schedule, how do you stay energetic & motivated? Writing full-time & getting paid for it probably helps
but do you have secret tricks you can share?
Hi Caitlyn! I’m curious, is there much difference with the flow of your stories when writing a book verses a story in an anthology?
Thanks to Biten By Books for the chance to see this interview and a big thanks to Caitlin for taking the time to do it for us readers!
and yes, I did have a question for Caitlin. Who are some you your favorite authors. Who do you think are some of the best of the newe writers out there today? Thanks, Lisa
I logged on just to see the new authors and try to win the books but I end learning about such good authors that I am glad that I read 1500 words a minute so I can read all these great books thanks for the heads up.
Hi
Great interview and great to learn more about Caitlin. Thanks for the advice to new writers!
Marie-Claude
What is your favorite genre to read?
What is your favorite genre to write?
What genre to you want to try writing in the most?
Hi Rachel, Hi Caitlin, and everyone else out there.
I have not had a chance to read your books since where I am currently stationed at never gets too many of the good books in their stores. But I can say that I love the name so much that my daughter has your name although I spell it Kaitlyn, her birthday is wednesday she will be a whole whopping 7 years old….
I have been entering contests for the last 2 weeks hoping to win something cause I am getting ready to go in for surgery on my hand and need something to read during my recovery… I have 4 kids 1 dog (who rocks and definetly earned her keep this weekend) and 2 cats….. and promised the hubby that while he is deployed that I will not get any new animals until he gets back so he can choose the next one.
alright that all for now

lol, already a member of bloodbank, and friends on it all
I read and commented in all the reviews!
I must say that I own Night Life on my Kindle and Pure Blood in print. I must confess to looking forward to Street Magic, it sounds absolutely wonderful!
My questions are: lol
Are you going to offer all the books on Kindle or in EBook format?
Which do you find harder; writing a full length book or collaborating in an anthology?
What age group would you say your YA series is set for?
I’ll keep my fingers crossed on winning! That is a wonderful prize that you are offering!
Beet – My cats love paper, which equates to them chewing on/sleeping on my unbound manuscripts. I guess it’s their way of showing support…
Virginia – I’d live in London. It’s my favorite city in the world. The photo was actually not what I chose, but I love it so I’ve been using it online.
Jennifer L – Finishing a book was definitely the most difficult step. I had about 50 false starts before I actually completed NIGHT LIFE.
Sewicked – The magic in the Nocturne City series is mostly based on Celtic and Thelemic traditions rather than Wicca, but I do use a lot of their terminology because it’s what people in this era are familiar with.
Zita – Steampunk is fascinating to me for the alternate history aspect. I love finding a jumping-off point in the real world and using it to build a new one of my own design.
Jessa – I live on tea and adrenaline. And sometimes pie.
Paige – Obviously, a short has to be much more streamlined and compact in terms of plot and character, but I try to keep the voice of the world consistent whether I’m writing a short or a novel.
Lisa – There are some phenomenal new authors I’ve picked up recently. I especially enjoyed an ARC of Stacia Kane’s UNHOLY GHOSTS, which drops in October. Really fantastic, spooky UF. I’d recommend her.
Lexee – I enjoy mysteries and specfic the most when I’m reading, and I find most of my stories end up with a speculative element in them, so that seems to be the genre I gravitate toward. I’d love to try writing a straight-up crime novel in the tradition of Chandler or Stark. I’ve always loved the genre as a reader.
I haven’t had a chance to read any of your books yet. I know, shame on me. Which of your books was your favorite to write?
Vell hello Caitlin,
I vas just perusing your site and your books appeal to me greatly! Is that purple in your hair? I love it! I myself sport a very fancy, tall, blonde mohawk. I loved reading SANDMAN too. Please bestow upon me good books. I’m feeling a bit under the veather and could use some new paranormals to read during the day.
Do you have a newsletter? Vhy aren’t you in MySpace? Are you a vitch? Vhat’s your favorite cocktail? Have you tried Port? Are you tired of my questions yet?
D
hi Caitlin! i’ve only had the pleasure of reading an eARC of something you’ve written but i have to say i’m loving it loveing it loveing itand it was the one i’ve wanted to read FOREVER. im almost done and will be blogging about it on my blog soon.
rachel – i’ve twittered about this contest on my twitter : http://twitter.com/jennzah
and added Caitlln to my blogroll at http://ohkamikaze.net
its my dream to be a featured author here!
good luck Caitlin! i just ought the first Nocturne City books yesterday!
Hi Caitlin,
I just went to read an excerpt at Amazon. Wow! I love your voice and that action packed beginning scene. I have tons of books on my to-be-read shelf, but I can tell you right now there’s going to be another one. I can’t wait to read your book. Best of luck with it.
Lina
Hi, Caitlin! ~Jackie waves~
How much do you try to write each day?
Can you keep two books going at the same time?
Debby
bridget3420 – Definitely STREET MAGIC and my YA novel. I love playing in that world.
Draculissa – Not at the moment, but I will before the YA trilogy comes out. I have a MySpace page that you can click to through my site, and my favorite drink is a vodka martini dry with olives.
Debby – I try to write about 2-3,000 words a day, and usually I only have a single project in draft stages. I can line-edit and draft two novels, but I tend to lose focus if I flit betwee n projects.
am a friend at myspace, and subscribe to bitten by books

Hi Caitlin.
I love your work, and am really looking forward to your YA series. To my mind, the paranormal genre is the perfect mode in which to explore adolescent feelings of “otherness” and alienation. As a high school librarian , I say welcome to the ranks.
Are any of the upcoming anthology stories set in either Nocturne City or Black London?
Just viewed your website. The covers and blurbs sound very interesting! Do you have a favorite cover?
Do you have a favorite Steampunk band?
Hi Caitlin,
I love the nocturne series and can’t wait for this new one.
I was wondering if you listen to music when you write and if so what is some of the stuff you listen to.
Hi Caitlin,
I’m looking forward to book 3. I’m keeping a spot open for you on my to read stack. I have to ask, what’s it like being a hot dog on a stick girl? How did people treat you? Did you get any material for your stories from the experience?
Do werewolves suffer from hairballs?
I’m a newbie at the bloodbank. Darkson.
Caitlin,
I enjoyed the interview very much. I am new to the whole “steampunk” genre. Do you have any recommendations to get me up to speed?
Thanks,
Janice

and also at:
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=739615329&ref=profile&pub=2915120374
Carol – The short story “Ginger” in STRANGE BREW is from Sunny’s POV and set in the Nocturne City universe (the “Hexiverse” as I like to call it.) “Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go” in HUNTRESS is a Jack story set in the Black London canon.
MarthaE – I love, love, love Chris McGrath and his work, so STREET MAGIC would have to be my favorite cover so far.
Lisa W – I have a playlist for every book and I listen to music almost constantly while I’m working. My favorite bands for writing are The Clash, AC/DC, Motorhead, the Pogues, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie.
Kurt D – It sucked as much as any other fast food job…people were rude, the hours and pay were crap and I had to wear a silly hat and hot pants. But I did get plenty of story material out of it, so it wasn’t a total loss.
Darkchallenger – Only when they shed
Janice – Jeff Vandermeer has a great anthology (titled STEAMPUNK) that collects some lovely stories. Cherie Priest’s novel BONESHAKER, which drops in a few months, is the best example of the genre in my opinion. I was lucky enough to get an ARC and I suggest picking it up.
Caitlin,
You have so many books in the works, how do you structure your writing time during the week? How do you juggle so many story lines in your head? What’s your favorite bookstore and your favorite desert?
Hi Caitlin,
I think it’s admirable to realize that work you’re doing, whether or not it’s cool by other people’s standards, isn’t your passion. That said, how did you get into MMORPG design? Have you done any other game design work (say, for tabletop, which is more like fiction writing)?
-Alana
Great interview. Thanks for taking the time Caitlin. I havent had the chance to get your books yet but Night Life has been on my wishlist for a while.
What appeals most to you about paranormal/urban fantasy that made you want to write in that genre?
#’s 2, 5 and 11 already done.
Hi Caitlin~
Great interview. How is the Paranormal Bender Tour going? I imagine that you are having quite an experience…any fun road trip stories to share?
Hi Caitlin,
What are some of your favorite non-paranormal books? Which movies are your favorites?
Mo

My friend Nichole Hicks said to come by and say hi. I love to read and I try to influence the younger ones in my family to read as much as possible too. My friend Nichole introduced me to your books with Nocturn City. I meant to get in some reading before bed, just a couple of hours, and ended up reading all night. I appreciate you sharing your writings with us and look forward to more in the future. Thank you

Yhank you for all you do for us book addicts!
Have a Great Week!
That’s supposed to be THANK YOU! I got typey excited!
Caitlin,
(1) How long did it take you from completing your first book and to getting it published?
(2) Did you pick London, because of the similar weather to where you are now?
I think it is awesome all the new authors writing YA now. Really gives them a choice, unlike when I was that age.
Thanks for the interview and answers to all the questions. It has been fun!
Enjoy your tour!
Reading through the interview & comments has peaked my interest in your books Caitlin. SIGH!!! Another name on my MUST READ LIST!!!!
I posted the interview & contest info on myspace blog…

Darkchallenger – I write for about two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon and do things like line edits and reading for cover quotes in the evening. Breaking up the time is key. I don’t actually have a problem keeping my stories straight (hah) because I usually only work on one novel draft at a time. My favorite bookstore is University Books in Seattle. And it’s pie, of course!
Alana Abbott – I applied for an entry-level position and went through an interview process. I was a for-fun gamer at the time and it helped to have the experience as a hobbyist. I’ve never done any tabletop but I’d love it if someone wanted to turn one of my novel series into an RPG.
Donna S – I love the element of the unseen in fiction and exploring the boundaries of fantasy and reality, so speculative fiction was a natural fit for me.
Lori T – Not yet, but I’ll be posting from the road in March!
Mo – I love Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe novels and I read a lot of nonfiction history and folklore texts. My favorite film of the moment is THE DARK KNIGHT but it changes every few months.
Nicole Hicks – The ebook thing isn’t up to me, but I believe the publisher plans to release my backlist, yes. Kindle is incredibly backed up right now because the format has become so popular, so keep checking. Shorts are definitely harder for me because I have to keep things compact and still deliver a complete story arc, but I really enjoy the challenge. My YA series is probably appropriate for ages 14 on…it’s spooky and scary and full of action but it’s a great adventure, too.
Chris J – It took me about a year to finish and polish NIGHT LIFE, about a month to find an agent and another two months to sell–fast, huh? All in all, it was two years until I saw a book on shelves. I picked London because I just adore it–it’s a magical city and the perfect setting for a dark UF novel. And it really doesn’t rain all that much
.
Caitlin your books sounds great. I plan on checking them out!

Hi Caitlin,
I enjoyed the interview. I don’t have a question about your series as I haven’t read any of the books yet. It sounds like I would really get into your books though!! I will be checking them out further!
I do have a general question for you.
How long have you been a writer? When were you first published and what was the book?
Thanks
Oh, your books sound fabulous! I’ve seen them around, but I haven’t bought them yet, (I have a lot of books in my TBR pile LOL), but of course, I can’t stay away from ocntests and this one sounds great! I’d love to read them!
contest over winner to be announced soon!
I had never heard of this series until I got the invite to this interview! It sounds awesome, and if I don’t win, I am going to head to my bookstore and pick them up! Thanks, Bitten by Books, for introducing me to some new reads!
