Knight of Swords begins with a disturbing scene in which Nathan, Lord Valancourt, finds himself removed from his own dreams and trapped in a vision with a murderous vampire, witness to what the monster is doing without being able to move or stop him. This same sequence of events has happened before, and the vampire inexplicably seems to be targeting some of Nathan’s previous sexual partners. Every time, the killer utters the name “Juliet” as he butchers the women, but this time, a young woman appears next to Nathan, and he realizes that Juliet has now joined him in the vision. Nathan feels immediately protective of Juliet, and when he jolts awake from his dream, he continues to think of her.
Later that morning, Nathan receives word that the man he calls uncle, who took him in as an orphaned child, has taken a turn for the worse and has asked to see him. It seems that Nathan must rescue a young woman being held prisoner by her relatives who want the inheritance left to her. Nathan will be the young woman’s guardian in his uncle’s stead, and as he nears the estate to retrieve her, Juliet once again joins his consciousness since she is the woman he is there for. After their escape from Juliet’s nefarious cousins, during which both display some unusual abilities they had no knowledge of before, Nathan and Juliet meet another man who claims to know the truth about them and their powers.
Knight of Swords, despite a somewhat interesting concept, disappoints due to its awkward phrasing, depictions of gratuitous brutality, and uneven characterization. The two lead characters act erratically, changing their behavior and reactions to events and people from page to page. This situation makes it difficult for the reader to really empathize or feel they know what Juliet and Nathan are really about at their cores. The author does earn some points for an intriguing reveal concerning the main villain, but that circumstance does not place this short novel into the “recommended” category.*Note: there is a scene of cannibalism.
