The Birth of Jaiden by Jennifer Malone Wright
A devout vampire seeking redemption, a fallen Guardian Angel, and a baby with the power to save or destroy the world come together in a fight for survival.
Alex is a powerful vampire and member of the ruling Great Council. He is also a devout Christian who for centuries has prayed for redemption for his sins against humanity. His wife and children lost in a horrific tragedy and his soul lost to vampirism, his faith and his Guardian Angel have been the only things that have stopped him from becoming the monster he fears he could be. But the long years have weighed on him and despair threatens to overwhelm him.
Danielle, a dark Angel, offers Alex the chance for the redemption he has sought. As was prophesized, a girl witch, Jaiden, has been born with enormous power that could herald either safety or destruction of the world. Alex has been tasked to raise Jaiden and teach her love. Alex is horrified over the task – a vampire to raise a child and teach it to love? The greater task, however, may be in keeping Jaiden safe from Malcolm, a vampire equal in strength to Alex. Malcolm’s plan for Jaiden, however, is far different – he wishes to teach her hate. As the struggle between good and evil/love and hate rages, the lines blur between enemies and friends. And in the midst of all the turmoil, lies Jaiden – the most powerful being ever born.
The Birth of Jaiden is part one of a series and sets the foundation. It is a clever idea, with a large cast of interesting characters, but a bit too heavy on narrative and a bit too light on character development and action. The author has crafted a unique culture and society, and it will be interesting to see where she takes it in the next installment of Jaiden’s story.
