Lark LaTroy’s first NeoDruids novella, Druids Dawning, is a fast-paced, tightly-plotted thriller. It does have some erotic elements, but those are easily eclipsed by the suspense LaTroy expertly weaves.
After his initiation as a Druid, Mitch Walker, aka Falnon to the other Druids, learns that he has been blessed by the goddess with two gifts—one of them exceedingly rare. His fellow Druids can help him master Foresight, but very little has been written about Blink-Stepping. All his master, Galnor, knows is that Druids are only bestowed two gifts when they need to use them in conjunction to fight a terrible evil. Mitch soon learns that his task is to save his sexy co-worker, Jill, from the Full Moon Killer, which will in turn save the rest of the world. This is not an easy mission for a new Druid, but hopefully, working together, Flanon, Galnor, and all the rest can save the fate of humanity.
As a dark fantasy suspense tale, Druids Dawning excels. LaTroy keeps the action constantly moving while fleshing out the characters and bringing the terror to life. Some of the transitions between action sequences are somewhat simply structured and highly condensed, but that is to be expected in a story of novella length. What does not work, however, is the erotica. In the first few chapters, it comes on very strong, but then dissipates as the story takes over. While some of it does become a slight plot point later on, it could still work very well with less graphic sexual content, and thus open itself to a wider audience.
Druids Dawning is an exciting, suspenseful tale that will have the reader rapidly flipping the pages. Lark LaTroy shows great promise in the dark fantasy genre and leaves plenty of room for more NeoDruids books to come while still wrapping the story up nicely.
