Chinese Portraits have been around for years, but they are a Q&A interview unlike any other. Instead of the usual, “Tell us how you got started writing,” type of query, the questions in a Chinese Portrait dig deeper, into the psyche of a person (or a character) and reveal the hidden depths. Or, God forbid, the lack of them! So, in celebration of the release of Mercy Blade, the third Jane Yellowrock novel, by Faith Hunter, here is a Chinese Portrait of Jane, and her inner Beast.
Chinese portrait of Jane Yellowrock and Beast
If you were a quality?
Jane: I would want to be strong, like the oak that bends but doesn’t break. Lately, the men in my life are PITAs, and strength and self reliance sound like good qualities.
Beast: (chuff) Silly Jane. Jane cannot be tree. Jane is animal. But Jane is alone and needs mate. Strong mate. I would look for good mate for Jane.
Jane: That’s not what a quality is, Beast. A quality is—
Beast: Good hunter. I am good hunter. (Turns nose away.) Silly humans.
If you were a flaw?
Jane: for the last few months I’ve been nothing but guilt. And really, not a lot of the poop-hits-fan-stuff has been my fault, but I’m the one with the guilt, which sucks. I need to stop being guilty.
Beast: Beast is good hunter. Beast has no flaws.
If you were a work of art?
Jane: A fine, handmade blade, well kept, so sharp you can’t actually see the cutting edge. The finest Japanese steel, heavily silvered, a distance away from the cutting edge. With a horn handle, crosshatched for a good grip. Oh yes!
Beast: (Chuffs in displeasure. Flicks ear tabs, annoyed.) What is art?
Jane: You’re a philosopher!
Beast: I am Beast. I am not some word I do not understand. Not silly game I do not understand.
Jane: A philosopher is like— Um… Art is like a painting or a song or an opera … Never mind.
If you were a sound?
Jane: Hmmm. The sound of blades clashing. The sound of bodies hitting, slapping, engaged in combat.
Beast: Jane needs mate. Should be sounds of mating.
Jane: Hush. We can talk about that later.
Beast: Want Bruiser. And Leo. And Rick. (Chuffs and shows Jane image of very big bed.)
Jane: Later. Not. Now.
If you were a song/music?
Jane: (Shakes off irritation with Beast.) I like drums, something from the islands, maybe with a hint of flute in the background. Something I can dance to.
Beast: Scream of Puma concolor. Scream–song that challenges all, that claims territory.
If you were a word?
Jane: Like my writer, I would be persistent. Of course, when she was growing up, she was told that persistence was the Devil’s finest quality, so perhaps that isn’t such a good word to claim after all.
Beast: I am Beast and beast. Do not understand this game. Need to hunt, to bring deer. (Looks around.) No deer here. Rabbit?
If you were a book?
Jane: Dangerous question, that. You know. Since I’m in one. Well three, now. If I pick one I’m not in, will I disappear?
Beast: Not a book. (Lifts lips to show killing teeth.) Not a book.
If you were a motto/a quotation?
Jane: Have stakes will travel.
Beast: Embrace You Inner Beast.
If you were a movie?
Jane: The Vampire Lestsat. Or the Buffy TV shows.
Beast: Born Free. (Huffs with amusement.)
Jane: (Rolls eyes.)
If you were a time period?
Jane: I’ve lived in three centuries now. Pick one. Wait. I like hot baths and cell phones. I’ll take this one.
Beast: Time before yunega made Cherokee to leave land in mountains, and then took trees, and burned the land. White man is evil. Time before he came was good time.
Jane: Oh, Beast. I’m so sorry.
Beast: Turns away. Does not answer.
If you were a personage of fiction?
Jane: Hmmm. Cat woman?
Beast: (Snorts with amusement) Jane is cat woman.
If you were an animal?
Jane and Beast look at one another.
Jane: Ummm. Have you not read my books?

Hi Faith (or Jane or Beast)!
I love these covers! Do you know ahead of time if you get the same artist for future covers, or if it’s kind of a surprise from the publisher leading up to the book’s release? (sorry, that was kind of a long-winded question)

2. Second question, If Gee were not a Mercy Blade and just a vamp, would Jane consider him as a mate?
3. Third question, does Beast like Gee as a mate for Jane?
4. Fourth question, Evie got burned so I doubt she’ll try to trick Jane ever again, but do you think she would? She has an agenda and it’s killing me to find out what it is.
Oh my goodness, I’m so giddy right now.

MORE QUESTIONS …
1. I appreciate a good IR paranormal and therefore appreciate the use of many different races in your books. I especially love the fact that Jane is Native American. What made you go forth with using a Native American heroine?
Hi Bethany. I am glad you like the books!
The art department at ROC does my covers and yes — the same ones each time. I get to offer suggestions, and then they come up with something way better.
I have two adopted blond Pomeranians.
And I adore NCIS. Not what you were expecting, I know, but I don’t want to watch Urban Fantasy on TV after a long day of writing Urban Fantasy. It’s too much like work!
Oooh NCIS, I love Abby and Ziva
2 questions for Faith.

Mud, Hi! Good to see you here!
1. What made you decide to write Urban Fantasy?
I have been a fantasy nut forever! UF joined my love of fantasy with my love of thrillers and I was hooked. I wanted to write what I read.
2. Other than Skinwalkers *Grin* what type of paranormal critter? Thing? Um, hope you get this intrigues you the most?
I love vamps. I am sucker (snicker) for a dark, brooding vamp.
OK, three. Where did you find the Grindy?
A friend mentioned them to me, and I went searching. I wanted something pure-T ugly. And I found it!

I’m sure we haven’t seen the end of Ricky Bo. That ending was just too much for my soul!
Ok a real question …
1. I have a thing for Derek and the Vodka boys. Are they purely fictional or based off of someone you know?
2. Will we see the Grindy again? And I mean get to see him this time and not just a blur, lol.
3. After reading Blood Cross, I was really looking forward to more of Angelina, will we see more of her in Raven Cursed?
Hi! Just wanted to say how much I love the books. Can’t wait to read Mercy Blade!
Is there any ritual that you’ve become acustomed to doing before you start writing?
Do you do anything to celebrate when a book comes out?
And to borrow from the Chinese portrait,If you were an animal?

No questions right now, but 2 comments….
Although I’m currently a little mad at our Ricky Bo, I can’t help but wonder if he will get to “run” with Jane in the future… but I’m sure we will find out in future books.
I too was going to ask about the teas, so I’ll look forward to your answer to Melissa B. I was leaving red wine behind while reading Jane and you have enlightened me to tea!
Love your writing!
Love these books – I pre-order all your books as soon as Amazon puts them in my recommended list as available for pre-release, so unfortunately I can’t garner those points here today since I ordered my Kindle version back in December!
Reading Skinwalker, Strange Brew, and Blood Cross prompted me to search for other stories you had written, which led me to the Rogue Mage series. I know this is not really on point here, since this is more about Jane and Beast, but …

Melissa B USA, Hi!
1. Do you know someone who has a bike like Jane?
No, I don’t. I looked all over the Internet for one, just to make sure I wasn’t copying from someone else.
2. Where is the best place to buy those delicious teas? IRL, btw.
I buy them from http://www.specialteas.com. The site is between shipments right now, and have almost no stock left, but come spring? They have everything at really good prices.
3. I noticed that birds and cats make it into the books a lot. Do you think your spirit animal is more catlike or birdlike?
My spirit animal is the hawk, most often the red-tailed hawk, which usually is a wonderful thing. Last spring, however, I had a feeling that the universe was telling me something bad, when two northern Goshawks attacked a redtailed hawk who was trying to claim territory in my backyard. It was an amazing battle that lasted for several hours.
By the time the redtailed hawk’s mate got there, the goshawks had injured him badly and he couldn’t fly very far. I wasn’t able to save him, and he tree-hopped away. I don’t know if he survived. The goshawks raised chicks in the tree out back. They left in the fall.
Hope you did well and the hawk didn’t really reveal anything bad. I just read a book by Victor Villase

Waiting for Jackie to send me Mercy Blade so I can review it already!

And I’m so happy Leo is better,he’s another favorite!
I’m still VERY upset with Evie! I’m glad she will be in the next book, and she hopefully will explain why she was trying to figure out what Jane is.
Hi Leann! You made my Day!
Jane will have to tell me what happens between her and Ricky Bo. So far, she is not talking!
I had to give up red wine too, and teas helped me make the transition. I like them rich and full flavored.
Mary M — I would love to continue that series, but my pub hasn’t offered me a contract on the Rogue Mage series. Yet.
But I really believe it will happen. Meanwhile, the World Book / Role Playing game Rogue Mage, should be out this winter, and it has lots of fiction in it, including a short about Thorn that takes place after Host.

Hi Faith! I RSVP’s this chat yesterday!
So glad I saw it because I don’t normally put reminders to self for new books but I do that for this series. Much to my hubby’s bemusement.
I “found” you from the story in Strange Brew antho, which btw is still one of my favorite anthologies. I still go looking for stories by different authors in that antho and it introduced me to some now favorites, including you. Strange Brew had me watching for Skinwalker! I actually got several friends to read this series. I’m so excited Mercy Blade is here! And YES I really like Jane. And Beast.
1. How did you get included in the Strange Brew anthology? Did you have Jane Yellowrock planned before that antho, or did it’s popularity prompt the new series?
2. Do you know any of the authors from Strange Brew antho? What sorts of books/authors do you enjoy reading?
3. Do you get inspiration from music for any of your books? Do you listen to music while writing?

Hi Faith, I’m so glad you’re here today! I adore the Jane Yellowrock books, thanks so much for writing them. The Jane/Beast character was the main attraction, and I especially love the scenes written from Beast’s POV.
I got Mercy Blade on my Kindle and read it right away, totally interfering with my own writing schedule.
I’m psyched to hear there will be more books in the series.
questions:
1) Might the spin-off books be about the witches, or…?
2) How long does it take you to finish writing a book, usually? And are you a plotter or a pantser, or combo?
3) Did you already know a lot about guns and Harleys IRL, or did you have to do a lot of research before writing?
Thanks!

I was wondering about the short story on how Rick got his tattoos. Will we learn more about why the witch chose those particular forms to tattoo on him? Hi Brenda K!
>>I was wondering about the short story on how Rick got his tattoos. Will we learn more about why the witch chose those particular forms to tattoo on him?
It isn’t impossible. I have considered bringing the little witch back into the picture later… We’ll see how the stories work out.

Christine H — How did you get interested in writing this particular genre?
I always loved fantasy. I wrote mystery/thrillers under another name. Combining the two gave me UF!

Raven Cursed just went to the editor. PR is taking all my time for the last 2 weeks. Soon I’ll actually get a break and I’ll be working on rest!

That was a fun interview . I have not seen one done quite like that before and it was nice reading it. I am new to this series but I have loved hearing about it all over the web so I cannot wait to read it. High in the TBR list.
My questions then are:
1. Are you the author part of the final say in the covers for the series or is the publisher? I must say I have cover love for this one.
2. What is your favorite time period in history? This was sort of a question involving clothing in another interview, but this series seems more urban today in dress. I am wondering if there is a fondness for modern weaponry in this novel or more traditional sword love in it?

Hi teriC!
1. Are you the author part of the final say in the covers for the series or is the publisher? I must say I have cover love for this one.
I do too, and the publisher let me have a say in it. I am never the final say. I do get to contribute. For instance, I begged them to decrease the size of Jane’s boobs from the DDD of the BloodCrosw cover. I mean — how can she fight with huge bazoongas? Or run? But they are just right in MB cover! And I love the colors!
2. What is your favorite time period in history? This was sort of a question involving clothing in another interview, but this series seems more urban today in dress. I am wondering if there is a fondness for modern weaponry in this novel or more traditional sword love in it?
My character is both a security expert and kills vamps (insane ones) for a living. In Jane’s world, Vamps are hard to kill quickly except by edged weapons so she uses them a lot. However, she also has a kickass M4 shotgun, handguns, and a derringer she hides under her hair.
Thank you for coming on and making me want the series really bad.

Hi Weng-HemC!
2.1. Is your writing inspired by any other books/authors?
All writers wsould like to think our work is uniquely our own, but everything in life and culture builds on everything else. So, I am sure my writing is derivative in some way to something else out there. All that said — I adore thrillers and if I consciously follow other writers, it would be the tough PI character from the 50′s TV shows combined with Anne Rice.
2.2. If you had to give up everything in your life except for one thing, what would you keep?

Hi! I’ve been house-bound for 3 days now here in SC. And I have loved the rest. I haven’t even vacuumed the floors. I am glad you made it!
Is Bo a southern endearment? Oh good grief, I’m back here again.
Hi Mud! You are my favorite stalker — er, tracker. LOL (Stalker by dog.)
BO is used in two ways.
1. The way Frency folk say pretty, as in Ricky Bo — pretty boy Ricky.
2. It is short for Beauregard.
Hi, I love Jane and her stories, my 2 daughters are 1/2 N.A., and it is wonderful to see not only a strong female character but a Native American one. They are both teen and have just started reading Skinwalker, so far they love it. I bought the Kindle edition, so I can take it with me if I have to evacuate, hurricane zone here, and I can’t leave my babies behind. LOL
In this story I was torn, I felt sorry for Jane and sorry for Rick, I don’t know who was hurt more. so I cried for both Fantastic story weaving ! I was on the edge of my seat with every paragraph.

Thanks, I am off to read the short stories !
Hi Faith,
Loved Mercy Blade! What an ending…!
I was wondering if skinwalkers and were’s follow the rules of nature. It seems no one gets along with the Werewolves but how about other Weres? Jane gets along with the vampires but hasn’t really known about weres. Wondering if she will be able to get along with them now that she knows they exist. I know mountain lions in the wild are really loners and only have a mate to reproduce then set off on their own again. Does Jane have to follow these natural law rules because of Beast? Beast seems more interested in mating than does Jane anyway but Beast seems to want to have a mate all the time and not necessarily just one, whereas Jane seems like more of a loner. Just wondering how they will resolve this conflict.
I don’t remember seeing the short story about how Rick got his tattoos from a witch. It wasn’t in Strange Brew or in Kits, was it? If not, where can I find that?

When I am stuck (some may call it writer’s block) that is a clue from my deep inner muse that I have screwed up somewhere and have an issue to resolve. I tell my iner self to deal with it and I go to sleep. 9 times out of 10 when I wake up the issue has a resolution. Running a good river is another way to clear my brain!

Jim Butcher’s and Charlain Harris’ newest. I’ve read an advance readers of Kim Harrison’s or she would be on the list too.

Right now in their lives, it’s Jane, but in the hungertimes, it was Beast. It’s a survival skill — be whoever is stringest!
I just finished Mercy Blade at 2 am this morning (yes, I could not sleep until I finished it – it was that good) & loved it!
