Author Anya Bast Release Party and KINDLE Contest Here!- CLOSED

Posted by Site Hostess Thursday September 9, 2010

PLEASE NOTE: The contest portion of Anya Bast event is now closed. The winners will be chosen at a later date and contacted via email.

In Cruel Enchantment, the hero, Aeric, has an intense passion for the heroine, Emmaline. At first his passion is distinctively negative and with good reason. Over three hundred years ago, back when the fae were free in the world, Emmaline killed the woman he wanted to marry. When Emmaline re-enters Aeric’s life, he captures her, convinced he wants to take revenge on her for this.

Yet something stops him. Emmaline isn’t the cold-hearted woman he has presumed she would be and even though she admits to the killing, he senses there’s more to the story than she’s telling him. Could it be that all these years he’s never known the full truth about his fiancée’s death? To top it off, he’s attracted to Emmaline. There’s something about her that fascinates and draws him to her.

Aeric’s already passionate nature is soon inflamed by Emmaline’s presence and his negative feelings toward her become fiery and near uncontrollable. Emmaline also has trouble resisting Aeric. After all, he’s the man she’s loved for centuries. Try as she might to hold herself away from him, she just can’t do it.

I love it when my characters have this emotional, dramatic energy in their relationship. It doesn’t always work this way with the characters I create. Oddly, bringing fictional characters together is a lot like observing a true life couple. Sometimes they have chemistry, sometimes not. Aeric and Emmaline have chemistry in spades, explosive chemistry. I really enjoyed spinning their tale and I hope you enjoy reading it.

Excerpt from Cruel Enchantment

He moved closer and her whole body stiffened. “So we’ve established that you killed Aileen and you’re lying about the circumstances to save your pretty ass. We’ve also established that I’m unable to kill you. The only question that remains is how I should make you pay.”

His gaze raked her up and down and his body reacted. His too big clothing hid her curves, but he’d had enough of a tantalizing glimpse of them during her shower to let his imagination run wild.

The very last thing he should be doing right now was remember the way her body looked behind that frosted glass. It was almost worse than having her naked. The image behind the shower door hinted at lush breasts—an overflowing handful—a narrow waist that flared into a generous, curvy bottom, and shapely legs.

He wanted to find out for sure, using his hands and maybe his tongue, too.

He’d brutally suppressed the urge before, tamping down the attraction he felt for her because it wasn’t right. Now, in the violent wake of what Emmaline had told him and his subsequent confusion over whether or not it was true—all that want came rushing back at him. It didn’t matter that it was horribly misplaced.

And damned if he could remember why he shouldn’t give in to it.

* * * * *

He was looking at her without anger in his eyes for once.

Okay, maybe there was a little anger in his eyes, but she had the feeling that the anger—for whatever mystical and unbelievable reason—wasn’t directed at her, but at himself. And anger wasn’t the only thing in his expression right now; there was hunger, too.

And that was all for her.

Her heart thudded so fast and so hard she thought it might break her ribs. What the hell? His behavior had changed so quickly she practically had whiplash.

“Aeric?” she whispered. She wasn’t even aware his name had slipped past her lips until it was out there. She didn’t know what to do with this sudden turn of events . . . although her body sure seemed to know. Her mind was awhirl with confusion, but the rest of her was quite aware that the man she’d wanted and fantasized about for so long was inches away from her . . . and seemed to actually want her back.

“Fuck,” he growled, bracing his hand on the wall right near her ear and moving closer to her. “This is not a good thing.”

“No.” She licked her lips—a nervous habit she’d had since she was a kid, no matter what guise she used. “This is not a good thing for either of us.”

His mouth almost brushed hers when he spoke. Her body flared to life, singing to almost painful arousal. Her nipples leapt to hard little points and she ached between her thighs. This man seemed to either terrify her, piss her off, or plunge her straight into animalistic heat.

His voice was a low growl, laced with anger. “I should chain you to my bed in charmed iron and take my revenge that way.”

She closed her eyes, her breath shuddering out of her. “I wouldn’t object.”

His eyes narrowed like a hunter’s sighting prey—and, boy, was she ever. Wounded, limping prey at that. She had no chance. “Don’t you have any shame?” he asked in a low, harsh voice.

“Not where you’re concerned. I never have.”

He eased her against him and dropped his mouth to her throat. Goose bumps erupted all over her skin. He nipped her flesh and then licked the small hurt. As though he wanted to punish her, but couldn’t make himself do it…..

~~~~~~
Feel free to ask me any questions you’d like. I’ll be around today to answer them.
And I have a question for you too: The word that best describes Cruel Enchantment is passion. I’m passionate about many things in my life—my family, my writing, my spirituality and living lightly on the Earth. What are some things you’re passionate about?
    • Anya Bast says:
      I wish I knew exactly where my ideas come from. I guess I’m blessed with a somewhat twisted imagination. That accounts for part of it.
      Usually I start with a character or the idea of someone in a specific situation. I wonder what would happen to this person in this situation, how they would react and what events might follow. It all starts from some little seed like that and blossoms into a full-blown story.
      Holy crap! Q1 is a hard one for me since my fav movies/TV shows tend not to be romantic ones. Classic — Scarlet and Rhett, definitely. I love that movie. Contemporary — Hmmmm…Okay, I’ll go with Elizabeth and Felip from Eat, Pray, Love.
      One of my fav childhood reads was The Grounding of Group Six, by Julian F. Thompson. :) Very dark, very awesome.
      I wrote my first book at the age 21 and it was really, really BAD. ;) I spent the next few years re-writing it (and learning how to write in the process). I ended up selling my second novel about seven years later to a small press fantasy publisher.
      Then, sort of on a dare, I wrote an erotic romance and ended up selling it to Ellora’s Cave. That’s when my career really started taking off.
    I tweeted about this event and posted on my Facebook page on two different posts to get both the link and photo (yes I am sometimes blog challenged).
    As for what I am passionate about, I would have to say reading is way up there. I spend most of my spare time with a book in my hand and have tried, unsuccessfully so far, to write one of my own. History and politics would be next on the list. People actually avoid discussing either with me after they get to know me because I get so heated about either topic. Of course, now that I have written this I have to say my family comes before reading for obvious reasons.
      Hey, I’m a bleeding heart liberal too!
      I love all the covers I’ve had from Berkley so far. The artist (Tony Mauro) who does them is AMAZING. I’m really crushing on the cover for Cruel Enchantment right now because of the colors–the reds and purples. The cover for JEWELED is absolutely gorgeous too.
      I usually get to keep the titles I select for my books, but not always. :)
    • Anya Bast says:
      I’ve considered YA, but I’m not sure I have the voice for it. I’d have to try to write a little of it first in order to determine if it would be a good move for me.
  11. Rae M. says:
    YAY! SO excited! I’m trying not to be that spazzy fangirl, but it’s good to not be in denial. At least that’s what I tell myself to make it okay.
    My passions are books and reading, photography, my family and animals. Not necessarily in that order, although the order can shift depending on the day! And sometimes chocolate gets thrown in there too.
    Where did the name Piefferburg(Did I spell that right?) come from? The map of it is great by the way!
    I loved the short story Taking Hold.Do you have any plans to write any more from the two characters or that world?
    And because I have quite a herd of animals myself, I was curious how many you have and what’s one of the weirdest/interesting things you’ve seen one of them do?
    • Anya Bast says:
      Hi Rae!
      Piefferburg came as a natural result from the name of the man who designed the place–Jules Piefferburg. He was the type of guy to name stuff after himself. :) Thanks for the compliment on the map. I love it too.
      I would like to write more werewolf stories so, who knows? I have nothing planned, but it’s a possibility.
      We have 7 cats (I know!) and a dog at the moment. I love the way they interact, their little social network. It’s endlessly strange and cool (sometimes sad) to me to see how they form cliques, shun certain cats, ect.
      • Rae M. says:
        7 cats and a dog. Don’t sweat it. I’ve still got you beat with 9 cats and a dog. Now, I’m a sucker for punishment! Now you can go around saying ‘well it could be worse I could have 9 cats’. And yes it’s sometimes sad but definitely strange and cool.
    i have a couple of questions: plotster or panster? and what’s the strangest way you got an idea for a story?
    +5 Attended and commented at Kendra Leigh Castle
    • Anya Bast says:
      I’m a combo plotter/panster. I know where the story is going and how it will end up, but I leave myself a lot of wiggle room in-between. :)
      The strangest way I received inspiration for a story…hmmm…probably from a bit of music. I couldn’t even tell you what song it was anymore that inspired Jeweled.
  15. Melanie T. says:
    I’m a very passionate person. Sometimes it’s a good thing and sometimes it’s not. I’m very passionate about reading. I ordered Cruel Enchantment through B&N (will e-mail receipt) and am anxiously awaiting it’s arrival along with Supernatural, season 5 which I am also passionate about. Loves me some Supernatural.
    Reading for me is an escape from my reality and I LOVE your books. That being said, Anya, I have a question for you. Any chances we’ll get to read anything else with Alejandro in it? OMFG is he hot!! I like vampires in general but damn. I didn’t want the book to end.
    • Anya Bast says:
    • Anya Bast says:
      I hope you don’t have to give your left foot away!
      It took me a long while, about ten years from the time I wrote my first book to the time I made my first sale. I went through one bad agent, lots of rejections and lots of learning. During that time I quit for a while (gave up), but I’m really glad I picked it back up again.
      Perseverance is key in this business, believe me. Never give up. Keep on trying. It’s those who stick with it who eventually make it.
      Good luck!!
    • Anya Bast says:
      1.) I always write my books to stand alone, so you shouldn’t have to read Wicked Enchantment to enjoy Cruel Enchantment. :)
      2.) It depends on the book or the series. It took me a while to research for the Dark Magick series because I delved heavily into Irish myth and faery tales.
      3.) I never do it on purpose, but an author can’t help but draw from their own lives while writing.
    Hi Anya,
    My passions are bf, of course, he is the cutest guy in the universe ;) And books and chocolate.
    This new world you have created sounds so fascinating. How come you started writing about the Fae?
    Blodeuedd A Finland
    • Anya Bast says:
      I started writing about the fae because the myth surrounding them has always fascinated me. Also because there aren’t many authors writing about them. I had room to create a big, unique world. :)
      Does Donnie Darko count? I love that movie.
      The best book I’ve read in a while is Best Served Cold, by Joe Abercrombie. It’s a historical fantasy novel. :)
      Hmmm…Isabelle from Witch Blood is jumping to mind. I love her strength.
  25. Lisa D. says:
    First of all I’m really going to have to get your book! Woohoo! Now that was an excerpt! Maybe a cold shower first. Okay back to the passion question. Family, gradchildren are on the top of the list. Friends and all my little furbabies. Politics, farming, ranching, fishing, I used to worship the sun above all else and now don’t see it at all. I have the skin to prove it too. I’m also very pasionate about learning. My 2 oldest grandchildren are both readers and do good in school and the one on the way I hope will too. I’m a college grad with a BS and a Masters. Always keeping up with some kind of learning helps keep you young also.
    Where did you go to college and what was your major?
    Do you have any animals? Oh by the way I have read almost all of your books. You are one of my fave authors.
      I went to the University of Louisville and have degrees in English and Psychology. I kept switching around (was a French major at one point) and decided to double major in the end. :)
      We have 7 cats and a dog. :) The strays, they like us.
  26. heatwave16 says:
    Hi Anya!!! Well, there are so many things I’m passionate about my family, my partner, my puppies, and football. :) Reading of course as well. We have 3 puppies, one black, one tan, and one white. We realized, a bit too late, that there is no color in existance that can hide all of those different colors of hair. How did you obtain your zoo? We adopted 2 from shelters, and one I found on the way to work.
    I do have a writing question for you as well. With all of the different projects/series you have going on is it hard to keep all of your characters and ideas from just getting all mixed up together?
    Thanks. :)
          Sorry about that!! I guess my eyes aren’t as good as they used to be.
          1.) We seem to be on catdar. All the strays somehow know to come to our house. That’s how we came by all our cats but the first two (one of which has now passed). We hung up the No More Cats sign a while ago, but we managed to keep collecting them. We’ve found homes for those (luckily), but still keep one outdoor cat, Kitty. Kitty gets fed twice a day, gets vet care and lives in our barn. I bring in him to our laundry room when there’s bad weather or it’s really cold. :)
          Our dog was adopted from Animal Control. She is the BEST dog in the whole world.
          2.) I don’t really have a problem with that. I do keep a journal with detailed notes, but most of it stays pretty uncluttered in my head. :)
    • Anya Bast says:
      Not working, what’s that? Hmmm…if I have the afternoon off, I usually spend it with my daughter. I take her to the zoo or we do something fun.
      Sometimes I’ll use snippets from my dreams in my writing, but it’s pretty rare. I can only think of a couple times I’ve done that. My dreams are usually too strange to use in my books. :)
    I am passionate about books and reading. I love reading. I can read for hours at a time. I love getting lost in a book being drawn into the story as if I was there. I love imagining different places and different characters just using my imagination. I love how books talk about soul mates and true love and how I believe that everyone has a soul mate. I love that books take me to a different time and place. I have even considered writing a book. I am also passionate about my family. I would appreciate any suggestions you have for someone looking to start writing a book.
    Hi Anya,
    We are honored to have a chance to chat with you. My name is Karla, I am from Monterrey, Mexico, and I come here on behalf of Fictionista Workshop, a communiy for online writers and editors.
    Here is my answer to your question:
    I am passionate about reading and writing, about traveling and knowing different places. I am passionate about fashion and art. I am also passionate about my own ideas and speaking up.
    Here are some questions. We
    • Anya Bast says:
      - What is the most important element when writing a foreplay scene, a build up to the grand finale? How do you build that amazing unresolved sexual tension?
      Chemistry between the characters is definitely the most important thing. In order for there to be sexual tension, the characters need to have that spark between them–just like in real life. It all comes down to the characters, how they’re drawn, and how they fit together as a couple. If you’ve done it right, you’ll end up with great sexual tension. It will develop naturally as you’re writing.
      - When do you find it easier to write? During the day or during the night? Do you listen to music? Tell us about your writing habits.
      I write better in the morning and the afternoon, definitely. I can write at night, and will if I have to, but I don’t like to do that because I’m tired. (I’m not much of a night owl.) I do listen music. It helps me get into the mood of a scene.
      - How did you feel when you sold your first novel? What advice would you give to amateur writers who want to get published?
      Oh, it was an amazing day. I screamed, cried, jumped around. It was the best feeling in the world. :) My advice to new writers is: Don’t give up. Perseverance is key. Write the book. Find a critique group/partner that’s a good fit for you. Never give up.
      - How has Internet impacted your career? What are some advantages and disadvantages for writers now that Internet has taken over the world?
      The Internet has made things worlds easier. All my edits are electronic now, and I can do research in the blink of an eye. The Internet also helps me connect with readers. It’s awesome.
      - What do you feel about negative critique? How do you cope with those feelings?
      You get used to it. It always stings a little, but there comes a point in every novelist’s life where they’d better grow some tough skin. If you don’t have tough skin, you’re going to be crying a lot.
      - Give us some tips for research. What are your research rituals?
      I love Google. A lot. :) I also love to buy books on the topics of my greatest interest and keep a small research library.
      - Are your characters and their personalities autobiographical? Or are they based on people you knew? If not, how do you create these tangible personas?
      I never base my characters on people I know in real life. My characters develop out of an interviewing process. I make sure I know their histories, their families, their hobbies, and their greatest strengths and weaknesses. I do all that before I start a book, but they develop best when I start to write them. I don’t know why, but that’s how it is.
      - What is your favorite animal and why?
      Cat. I love cats very much. I love their individual personalities, the way they purr and cuddle. I love their little kitty paws. I just love everything that is CAT.
      I hope that was somewhat helpful for your workshop!
    I am passionate about my family. My husband of 38 years is a kind, honorable and and generous man. We have 3 very different children. I grew up the oldest of 6 and was either being compared to some ideal or being told to be the example for the others. We made sure our children knew they were individual with their own special gifts and personalities. We wanted them to become themselves, not a copy of someone else. If you see the three of them together, 2 girls and a boy (well, actually women and man), you might not think they were from the same family. +10
    My other passion has always been the environment. Luckily, my husband shares it. All three of our children have grown up with the ethic and share it. We try to conserve and recycle as much as we can. We have started recycling programs where we work. We recycle what we can in the plastic, glass, metal, paper families. We have a compost pile in our yard. We garden. Food scraps that can’t be composted are fed to our daughter’s pig. My care is 10 years old and gets better gas mileage than even some of the hybrids. We have converted our light bulbs (but I am not sold on the safety of the new ones) and have appliances and fixtures that save energy and water. Items we can no longer use are donated to several charities that either use them in their programs or sell them in their thrift stores. Once you get into the habit, it is rather easy to not add much to the landfill. +10
    Hi, Anya!!
    Passion! That’s a wonderful theme for a story! As for personal passions, like many other commenters, family and books are right up there! I’m also pretty passionate about education–I spend time helping at my kids’ school and we support our passion financially as much as we can as well.
    Anya, you mentioned that you do NOT base your characters on people you know in real life. Do you ever take bits and pieces from real-life people? A characteristic or habit, or eye color? Even so, has anyone ever claimed to recognize him/herself in your books? :) And what
    • Anya Bast says:
      I have taken some of husband’s characteristics, but he’s the only one I can think of at the moment. Nope, I’ve never had anyone say they recognized themselves, although I have had people with the same or similar names as my characters email me. :)
Books and the written word are vital to education and democracy, because without literacy many people lose their voice in society if they can’t understand what’s going on. This is why librarianship is my calling.
      Hi Bella —
      1.) It was myself. The whole story is this: I joined a loop for writers where there was discrimination going on against the erotic authors. It made really angry, (and brought the subgenre to my attention). I’d never written anything hot before, so I decided to try my hand at it and “dared” myself to write the absolutely hottest thing I could. Turned out I wasn’t bad at it. :)
      2.)I never saw myself as writer of erotic romance, (That’s not all I write. I write paranormal romance too, like Cruel Enchantment), but I’m happy it turned out the way it did.
      3.) I love The Snowy Day and Teddy Bear’s Picnic when I was a small child. Yes, I read to my daughter every evening. :)
    Thanks so much for the second book! I can’t wait to pass on the great news to my friends, they’ll be ecstatic! I really love the interaction in the Dark Magick series and I’m hoping it’ll be one you can keep going for a while.
    I’m passionate about my reading, knitting, crafts and cooking. I love eating and sharing great foods and trying to live my life without too many regrets. I’ve been trying to push myself to go outside of my usual life to try new things that I was scared of when I was younger as I feel I’m more settled into my own skin now that I’m a bit older and more opinionated, lol.
    Now, a question for you: What music would you say goes best with this book/series? I’ve read some books that are smoky and seductive but the music that I think goes best is one that’s so much smoother, so I’d love to hear your response. Do you listen to anything when you’re writing or is it normally silent/quiet?
    Thanks!!
    Hi Anya!
    Wonderful questions: I am passionate about similar things: family, books – ebooks and print (reading), being respectful of and to others and lastly trying to reduce my carbon footprint. Hand in hand with the last two is teaching my nieces and nephews to do the same (I don’t have children myself).
    I ask similar questions about motivations for your stories, where do you get yours – from real life situations, things you see, read or envision?
    Are the places/cities you create based on real locations, or ones you make up from imagination?
    How do you keep track of your characters and worlds and not get everything confused from book to book in the series?
    Okay, I hope I have the points added up as I should…
  148. I’m passionate about my kids, making sure they grow up in a loving, safe environment full of laughter. I’m also passionate about my relationship with my husband– to not just have us be “mom and dad” but also partners and keeping it steamy:) After 21 years of marriage and 3 kids (17, 16 and 10) we still laugh together and love having alone time:)
    When you first started writing steamy scenes was it easy for you, or did you have to work through it and find the right way that would work for you and the characters?
