Author Carrie Vaughn Release Party and Contest

Posted by Site Hostess Monday June 28, 2010

PLEASE NOTE: The contest portion of the Carrie Vaughn event is now closed. A winner will be chosen at a later date and contacted via email.

Hello, and thanks for stopping by the release party for Kitty Goes to War, the eighth book in the series about a werewolf named Kitty who hosts a talk radio advice show. She’s come a long way — from bottom of the pecking order to leader of the pack, from awkwardly single to happily married. She’s made a lot of friends (and enemies) and faced a lot of trouble along the way. And she’s not done yet. I’m so pleased that I still have more stories to tell about this character. I’d heard writers talk about characters taking over the story and demanding that they be written about, but I didn’t really understand that until Kitty came along.

One of my pet projects in writing the series has been to explore what some of these supernatural goings-on would look like in the real world, which led me to a subject that’s hugely relevant in the U.S. right now: war veterans returning home and trying to adjust. In a supernatural world, of course there’d be werewolves serving in the military. In so many ways they’d be ideal soldiers — perfect hunters with killer instincts, nearly invulnerable. But what happens when these werewolf soldiers try to come home? They’ve spent months giving in to the violent natures of their wolf sides — can they ever listen to their human sides again? That’s what Kitty finds out in her new adventure.

The prize I’m offering is an iPod shuffle pre-loaded with all the Kitty playlists (one for each book) currently in existence (including the ninth one — I haven’t even announced the title to the book yet!). Kitty started out as a late-night radio DJ, so music is a big part of her life, and a big part of my writing — I always have something playing in the background. It seems appropriate to share the love.

Thank you to everyone who’s been reading the books and keeping up with the series, and I hope you enjoy the latest installment. Stay tuned, because more adventures are on the way.

What’s your favorite song (right now)? Do you have a favorite song from the Kitty playlists? (I like “Train in Vain” by the Clash and “Crush Story” by Too Much Joy)

    Laura C

I rsvp’d earlier today. I’m really glad to be able to join you today.

I love reading the Kitty books, and I’m interested in seeing where Cormac ends up. Have you ever considered writing a story for him?

    • I’ve written several! “Looking After Family” was in Realms of Fantasy a few years ago and will be in the Kitty short story collection due out next year. “God’s Creatures” will be in the PN Elrod edited Dark and Stormy Knights, due out next month.

  2. Sandy G says:

I’m looking foward to reading Kitty Goes To War. How do you choose the playlist for each book?

    • I really do listen to music when I’m writing, and every now and then a song will jump out as being “right.” Or one jumps out as I’m going about my day, driving, etc.

Kelly H. here. I RSVP’ed earlier today and am so glad to be here. I absolutely adore the Kitty books and can’t wait for the next one! Just curious where you came up with the original idea for Kitty? Will you be having Cormac find a love interest somewhere along the line, possibly Tina?

    • I decided if there really were vampires and werewolves, they’d need their own talk radio advice show because Dr. Laura wouldn’t be able to handle their problems. And that was how Kitty was born, because I needed a DJ.

You’ll just have to stay tuned about Cormac…

  5. w00t! So excited to be here – I’ve been waiting for the next Kitty adventure.

Some of my favorite’s from Kitty’s playlist are Creedence Clearwater “Bad Moon Rising”; Oingo Boingo “No Spill Blood”; & No Doubt “Just a Girl”

  6. heatwave16 says:

Hi Carrie!!! Thanks for stopping by. I love Kitty, and I’m happy to see her adventures continuing. Not that I want one, but do you have a certain number of books you want to write or an ending of the series? I was asking because I’ve noticed a few other books you had out, and I didn’t know if you were interested in working on a new series. I’d be happy if the series went to Kitty Goes to the Nursing Home. :)

Right now, I’m enjoying my favorite band from Pittsburgh, the Clarks. That’s my hometown, and I was feeling a bit homesick. Where are the Kitty playlists? I must have missed them on the website…

Thanks for the awesome prize!!! Very original and creative…

    PS – i rsvped

    • The Kitty playlists are included in each book, in the front/acknowledgments.

I do have an ending in mind for the series, but I don’t know exactly when it’s going to happen. I have a few more ideas for books first.

      • heatwave16 says:

I can’t believe I never noticed the playlists before. I just jump straight to chapter 1. :) I do love Blood Letting by COncrete Blonde

    • Alexa h says:

they are printed in the very front of each book.right after the dedication.

  7. Koren Cota says:

    Hi Carrie,
So glad it is time for the next book. I have read all you work including YA. They are all wonderful but now it is time for more Kitty, more Ben…. more CORMAC!

Do you set one large goal or many small ones?

How do you reward yourself when you reach your goals?

Do you keep track of random plot bunnies as they pop up or do you let them run free until you need them?

I will come back later to answer you questions. I just looked at the clock and realized I am late….

    • I do both large and small goals — the small goals are stepping stones to achieving big goals. i.e. if my big goal is “write a novel,” then I have little goals of “write 500 words every day.”

I just kind of reward myself a little all the time — wine and ice cream keep me happy.

A little of both — interesting plot twists often pop up, and I can usually keep track of them and use them to my advantage.

  8. Clothdragon says:

    Marilou G, I rsvp’d earlier.

My current favorite song is Sara Bareilles Fairytales, but I don’t get much chance to listen to music anymore. With children, the quiet is so much harder to get.

My question: Now that you’ve gotten to book 8 (and 9 on the way), do you have anything you wish you would have done differently in the earlier books, in making the world, or even changes in what the characters have done?

    • You know, I really don’t. At this point, with the books already written and the stories established in my brain, I can’t really imagine it happening any other way. I use what’s happened in the past to build up the future books, so I wouldn’t want to change anything — it would change what I have planned.

  9. Donelle says:

Hi Carrie… Love Kitty. She and the characters are awesome. Question, is it your choice or the publisher’s to make first run as paperback? I love this as I carry books with me and paperbacks are so much more convenient than hard covers and I refuse to Kindle it.

    • It’s the publisher’s decision. They decide how best to sell and market the books, and urban fantasy does really well in mass market, so all the books have been mass market paperbacks.

  10. Lisa M. says:

I loved, loved, loved Kitty’s House of Horrors so much that I cannot wait to read Kitty Goes to War. I just ordered it from amazon. I really like that you included the playlist for each book and I have discovered some great songs that way. Glad to hear there will be a book 9!! I hope Kitty stays areound for a long time. I also preordered Discord’s Apple. It looks so fascinating! You are definitely one of my favorite authors!
I also RSVP’d, am FB freinds with you (Lisa Mason)subscribe to your newsletter, posted links on FB profile and Twitter. Voted in the poll, checked out the new free books for Kindle (and just may order a few) Keep up the great work, the Kitty books just keep getting better and better!

  11. Jason Lewis says:

    Hey Carrie,
I gotta say my favorite song on the playlist is CCR’s Bad moon Rising, I know the words, but my brain still hears “there’s a bathroom on the right” LOL.

RSVP’d, also did it for Nicole’s Kindle contest

    • I’ve been writing since I was a kid — it wasn’t even really a decision to start. I have an active imagination, I loved writing down the stories going on in my mind, and I discovered pretty early that writing is something I liked to do that other people didn’t, so I focused on that.

  14. Amy T. says:

    Hi Carrie!

Yes, I do have a current favorite song (but that tends to change by the hour LOL!). It is from the OK Go’s CD called OK Go. For some reason that I can’t fathom, that entire CD makes me think of supernatural beings. The song that I’m speaking of is: 1000 Miles per Hour.

I’m so happy with your Kitty series. Each book has been better than the last and the last book (not Kitty Goes to War … since I’ve not read it yet) made it into my “favorites” list. I really enjoy watching Kitty mature.

I also really enjoy paranoramal mysteries tremendously and feel that the Kitty series fits that category more and more as time goes on.

I’m really interested in how you deal with the war veterans issue. I can only recall one other current author of paranormal fiction that’s really dealt much with that issue at all: Mario Acevedo. That’s a totally different situation. In your story, the werewolves went over there and back. In his story, the man became a vampire while over there and came back. The experience is not at all the same.

Do you know of any other paranormal fiction writers that touch on the subject at all?

    Amy T.

    P.S.
    Yes, I RSVP’d.

    • My father is a Vietnam vet, so it’s an issue I can really relate to. L.A. Banks has a series about werewolf special forces soldiers — I haven’t read it and can’t remember the titles, I’m afraid. I can’t think of anyone else, either. Most paranormal fiction seems to get pretty personal, dealing with relationships, etc. rather than big-stage issues.

  15. David B. says:

Just swinging by to say congrats on the continued success of the Kitty series and loving “Voices of Dragons.” Woot!

See you in August, if not sooner!

  16. Nikki B. says:

    Hi Carrie!
Can’t wait for Kitty goes to war, I will be at the bookstore bright & early tomorrow!!!

As of right now my favorite song is B.o.B’s Airplanes feat. Hayley Williams Not generally a rap fan but I love Hayley who fronts the band Paramore and the chorus to Airplanes is just amazing. Love it!

My question to you is did you plan the whole relationship with Kitty & Ben from the start or did that just pop out of the blue when you started writing Silver Bullet? (if I’m remebering correctly which book!) I admit I did not see it coming, I was anxiously awaiting for Cormac to have his moment and then you cued in Ben! I was surprised and was unsure at first but now I just simply adore him and I don’t know what I’ll do if Kitty pulls a typical heroine mess up with her love life! Eeep ;-)

    Thanks for being here!

Whoop so much fun this week! ;-)

    • Ben and Kitty actually hooked up in the third book, Kitty Takes a Holiday. I knew it was going to happen when I was in the middle of writing the second book. So, it wasn’t something I planned from the start, but when the story started bending that way, I just followed it.

  17. Alexa h says:

I rsvped earlier. I love the kitty books, I love the fact that this is the first book I’ve come across where werewolves aren’t really monsters. I was wondering what inspired the playlists? Why the paticular songs. are they songs that Kitty would play, or songs that you listened to while writing? They fit the stories very well, just curious.

    • They’re songs that jumped out at me while I was writing each particular book. I listen to music when I write, so a few songs always strike me as being appropriate for that book. Because Kitty’s a DJ, I thought include the playlists would be a great extra.

  18. Taylor Z says:

My favorite song right now is Waka Waka by Shakira. It’s the theme song for the World Cup this year and it’s fun to dance to. Ps- I RSVP’d before.

  19. flip says:

P.L. Hi Carrie: I love Kitty Goes to War. The series is going strong and there are no signs of fatigue. My favorite song right now is Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis. I love Train in Vain.

  20. Kristina O says:

    Hey Carrie,

My name is Kristina O. and I RSVP’d. I can’t wait for the Kitty Goes to War… especially since all my books are packed and I’ve been telling myself no on getting anymore books until after school starts in August.

I actually do have a favorite song at the moment and its been stuck in that slot since April or May. Its called Survive by a Japanese rock singer named Miyavi. Also, I have a question for you:

Everyone suffers from writer’s block on occasion and they all handle it somehow, but what is your personal way of handling it? Are you the type that gets up and walks away for a little while or forces yourself to get to a stopping point?

    • If I’m blocked it often means I’ve taken a wrong turn in the story, so I’ll go back, rework my outline, figure out what’s wrong, brainstorm possible solutions, and that will usually get me going again.

  21. Alexa h says:

My favorite song from the playlist thus far are, No doubt’s “just a girl”, the clash’s “Trainin Vain”, the killers “Mr. Bightside”, And most of the Creedence Clearwater Revival, they were one of my dad’s favorite bands and hold a special place in my heart. Shared this link on facebook hopefully people will stop by. q:are the ideas for your stories inspired by conversations or events that happen in your life or just ideas swimming around in your brain?

    • A little of everything goes into the stories. A lot of it is just looking out in the world and wondering what it would look like if the supernatural were real, and wondering what kind of problems my characters would get into.

  22. Viki S. says:

Thanks for being here. I’m feeling nostalgic lately and have been listening to my BEATLES collection quite a bit. A DAY IN A LIFE is currently my fav.
God, I love the CLASH too….maybe I’ll switch to LOVERS ROCK.
    I rsvp’d.

  23. Alexa h says:

checked out kindle titles but don’t have a reader so…
    Entered no mercy book contest
    RSVPed to Linda Robertson

  24. Susan S. says:

I have a lot of favorite songs. Currently I have been listening to the second volume of the True Blood soundtrack. From Kitty’s playlist my favorite’s are: Creedence Clearwater Rivival “Bad Moon Rising,” Steve Miller Band “Abracadabra,” and Garbage “As Heaven Is Wide.” The “Kitty” series is till one of my favorites, and I can’t wait to read the new book. I RSVP’D.

  25. Dan W says:

Favorite song right now-”Anemone” by Brian Jonestown Massacre
Favorite from Kitty playlists-”Elvis is Everywhere” (curse you, Dr. Demento!)
    I RSVP’ed

You mentioned on facebook a couple weeks ago that you were receiving mail stating that your books are too liberal. I’ve never been one to read fiction searching for a political message even if the author intended to make a political point. When you write (specifically the Kitty books), do you even consider political viewpoint?

    • There’s definitely a bit of politically commentary — I had an entire book focused on a Senate committee hearing, after all. Plus, can you imagine Kitty _not_ expressing an opinion about politics? I figure if I want Kitty’s world to look like the “real” world, then I have to include some of that.

  26. Stephanie S says:

:) I love the Kitty Norville series, it’s great (I have to admit, though, that I really wanted Kitty and Cormac to work out – they always had great tension between them) Ben’s great too, though, I can’t wait to read more of their future together.

I’m not sure if I have a favorite song right now, I could listen to Edward Sharp & the Magnetic Zero’s “home” over and over again – so I suppose that might be it – and I love listening to the Black Keys, Fanfarlo, Stars, the Kinks, and Monsters of Folk. But my favorites tend to change frequently since I work from home and play music constantly throughout the day – I get sick of hearing the same songs to often. Internet radios great for that though! :)

I voted in the poll and RSVP’d for this event as well as the Nicole Peelers and Linda Robertson contests! Thanks

  27. Cheryl U. says:

Hi Carrie, I LOVE your Kitty books, and shared them with my friend, who also loved them! Right now my favorite song is “Halfway Gone” by Lifehouse. My favorite Kitty playlist song is “View to a Kill” by Duran Duran (my teenage crush band)! My question is about Rick. Is he sort of in love with Kitty? It seemed to me that this was hinted here and there. Another question, did you purposely keep Kitty and Cormac apart in order to let the romantic tension grow, or should we give up on any hope of the two of them finally getting together? Or maybe you can’t answer that? :) I RSVP’ed and voted in this week’s poll.

    • The thing about Rick — he’s genuinely a nice guy who considers Kitty to be a good friend. I don’t think he’s actually in love with her, but some people might mistake that for “romantic” love.

I’m not trying to manipulate any sort of twisted love triangle involving Kitty and Cormac — I have more interesting things to write about. We’re back to “real” world issues — sometimes things work out, sometimes they don’t. The story went the way that it did and I’m not really planning on changing that.

  28. Aymee I says:

Hi Carrie! Thank you so much for coming to visit with us today! I’m still relatively new to the Kitty series, but I am enjoying it so far. Have always had a fascination with DJ’s, so to find a series based around one was pure heaven for me. LOL

Anyway, I must be a dork because I can’t find the playlists, but I love the thought of “Bad Moon Rising” on a werewolf playlist. LOL The two songs I’m hooked on right now are Blake Shelton’s “All About Tonight” and Katherine McPhee’s duet with Zachary Levi, “Terrified”.

Again, thanks for coming out to play!

The boring stuff: Shared on FB, and RSVP’d via FB as well.

  29. Winterbeast says:

Hello, I RSVP’d from last night, and My Favorite songs right now are “Tomarrow’s just a song away” from a local band calling themselves Hockey.
I don’t have a favorite from the playlists, and I admit I skip them to go on to reading the books. Are they songs that were listened to while writing the books? or that we should listen to while reading the books?

I love the Kitty Books, especially how there are all sorts of other-Weres in Kitty’s universe. WereLions, Wereseals, (as a ham radio operator, I am waiting for a Wereboar) interesting to watch.

One small question: What happens to Weres in the Kittyverse when there is a Lunar Eclipse? (we had one a few days ago on the west coast..)

    • As I mentioned, the playlists are songs I listen to while writing the books.

The moon’s still there during a lunar eclipse, so they’re still affected. Maybe even more so?

      • Winterbeast says:

About the Moon, Ever since Ray Stevens came out with “The Streak” in ’74, the word “Moon” to me has always had a possible use as a Verb.
I don’t think any Were would change due to being mooned, but it would be amusing if it happened.

  30. Celtic Witch says:

There you go again getting all liberal politics on us. First it

  31. Chelsea B. says:

Hmmmm. Right now I’m really into Boys Like Girls so I’m going to say Love Drunk. It has a great beat, which all of their songs pretty much do :-)
I’ve never read your series, but it sounds interesting. A DJ? Very cool and original 8)

    I RSVP’d.
    I RSVP’d for Linda Robertson

  32. DBSKLover says:

Hi! A story with a happily-married werewolf couple! I can’t wait to read it. I was wondering what types of other creatures I will encounter?
    Thank you!

    Aorihanazari(@)gmail(.)com

    • Oh, you’ll encounter just about anything! I’ve had witches, psychics, fae, djinn, ghosts, were-leopards, were-tigers, skinwalkers, wizards, vampires… Pretty much anything I decide goes in, goes in!

      • DBSKLover says:

Faes and vampires? Oh yes. Thank you very much!

Oh…I am not sure if this was asked, but how did you get into writing about Kitty? Also, is this her name, or is there a full one?

        Thank you!

        • Her name is Katherine.

I had this idea for a talk radio show for supernatural creatures — that’s where it all started.

          • DBSKLover says:

Do you have any favorite authors from your genre? Also, were you always geared towards politics? In addition, how did that start?

            Thank you!

          • Well, I just find it hard to talk about the world without talking about politics. It wasn’t really intentional otherwise.

Depends on what genre — science fiction and fantasy, I have a ton. Specifically paranormal? Patricia Briggs, MLN Hanover, Diana Rowland, Lyn Benedict.

          • DBSKLover says:

Diana Rowland? I just finished her two books. I was wondering who do you root for? The demon or the agent? ( I am personally always rooting for the more supernatural beings…for some reason.)

          • The cop! Gotta root for the heroine.

  33. Thanks, everyone, for all your great comments and songs. Such a huge variety, I love it!

  34. Raonaid Luckwell says:

Favorite song as of right now? Well that would be a tie between Apocalyptica’s “I don’t care” (with Adam from Three Days Grace) and L’Ame Immortelle “Fallen Angel”

Though I was looking for a printed list of Kitty’s playlist to see if there is anything that I may like..

    • A) Were, because they are not dead.
      A) Oh, I love lots of envy for lots of authors. But if I wrote their books I wouldn’t have the joy of reading them myself!
      A) Not quite sure. At least 3, possibly more.

  37. Debbie W. says:

As usual, Carrie, once I started Kitty Goes to War, I couldn’t put it down!! That raises a dilemma for me because on one hand, I want to find out how it ends ASAP, but on the other hand, I want to take my time reading it so I can savor the words & the way you’ve laid out the story! So I compromise by reading non-stop & then go back the next day to start it again at a slower pace.

Recently I was lucky enough to get a free copy of Kitty & the Silver Bullet on audio from the folks at Tantor & have been listening to it. I know other authors find it odd to hear their characters’ “voices” sound so different from what you hear in your head, so my question(s) for you are:

    1. Have you listened to Marguerite Gavin read any of your books & if so, what’s your take on it?
    2. I don’t believe you mentioned it in any of the books specifically, but do you hear Rick speak with any hint of a Spanish accent?

Thanks for letting us play in your world, Carrie, & keep up the great work!!!

I rsvp’d, shared the link on Facebook, & voted in this week’s poll.

    • I’ve listened to bits and pieces of a couple of the audio books — I’m not a big listener and have never really partaken of audio books, so I’m not a good judge. Lots of people like her, but she definitely reads the books differently than I would (as people who’ve been to my readings can say).

No, Rick doesn’t have a Spanish accent. I don’t think I’ve mentioned it specifically, but it’s pretty clear from the syntax of his speech that he’s American through and through by now.

    • Debbie W. says:

Oops. Forgot about the music. I go for the older stuff, like CCR’s “Bad Moon Rising” or David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”, but I particularly loved Sam the Sham’s “Lil Red Riding Hood” from the latest playlist!!

  38. blodeuedd A says:

Fav song right now…after many months it is still Daddy’s Gone by Glasvegas, I so need a fav new song! Been listening to it way too long

    Any suggestions? :=)

    • I’ve been jumping on the steampunk and bluegrass bandwagon — Abney Park, Vernian Process. Listen to the Clockwork Cabaret podcast for a good summary.

In more pop circles, I quite like the Killers, Vampire Weekend.

I usually read science fiction and fantasy, or anything that people recommend to me. Anything that’s good.

  42. Tanya Langston says:

    Hi Carrie,

I RSVP’d late last night. First I love the Kitty books. You created an awesome character and world. My question is I know there will be only two or three more books in the series. Are you planning to branch off and create a new series from any of the current minor characters in the Kitty series? Maybe vampire or other shifters and have Kitty as a minor character?

    Werewolf lover,
    Tanya

    • I don’t know yet. Since I’m still a few books from the end, I’m concentrating on those, and I’ll have to see what comes up after.

      • Tanya Langston says:

I can’t wait to read the final books but I know I will be sad when it all ends. Your series has been my fave werewolf series and you have a special place at the top of my fave authors list. :)

  43. Stella B. says:

My favourite song right now, the one I can’t get out of my head is Open your Eyes by Snow Patrol and Here Without You by 3 Doors Down.

Music plays a huge part in my mood too, what are your favourite movies you like to watch when you are feeling blue/happy/romantic/etc?

Have you tried audiobooks? What do you think: do you like having someone tell you the story or do you prefer to envision it and interpret it yourself?

Why did you name your heroine Kitty? especially a werewolf? :-D

    • I have a lot of favorite movies — 80′s science fiction and fantasy like Tron, The Last Starfighter, Aliens, Terminator, Labyrinth, Ladyhawke, The Neverending Story, etc. Star Wars, Lord of the Rings.

I don’t listen to audiobooks — I tend to be visual and can’t really focus on someone reading the book. I prefer to see it.

I named her Kitty because I thought it would be awesome having a werewolf named Kitty.

I read Rick’s story on your website. Will Rick find his one? or did he already find her and lose her?
Also are the events that are in “War” have anything to do with the Long Game?

    • I think Rick has had various loves over the years. I’m not sure he has a “one.”

The stuff in war is pretty tangential to the Long Game, but there are hints.

  47. Sophie Y says:

    Hi Carrie,

Loving your books, am waiting on kitty and the dead mans hand arriving in the post, may have to wrestle the postman to the ground for it!

My favourite song of the moment, is probably, Alejandro by Lady GaGa, slightly hanging my head in shame as i’m a rock girl at heart, but it’s so catchy!

My favourite from the playlist has to be Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bad Moon Rising because it always makes me want to dance!

My question for you is, if you weren’t a writer what would you be doing with yourself?

  48. Hey Carrie,

Just wanted to quickly drop a note and tell you how much I enjoy the Kitty series. I normally collect most of the books in a series before starting it(cause I hate the wait between books)but yours is one of only about 5 authors that are on auto buy. I read them as soon as they hit the door. Thank you for so many hours of enjoyment and may Kitty continue to entertain us for years to come.

I love the Kitty series and can’t wait to read Kitty Goes To War.

My question is: I have always liked Rick and was wondering if you ever plan to give the vampires their own series?

My favorite song on the Kitty Play list is (ERIC BURDON AND THE ANIMALS “PAINT IT BLACK”)

    I RSVP’d for the event

    • I haven’t thought about giving Rick or the vampires their own series — the truth of it is I feel like I just don’t have as much to say about vampires as I do about werewolves. I haven written some stories featuring Rick — “Conquistador de la Noche” is online, and there’s another that’ll be coming out in an anthology next year.

  50. Chris S. says:

    Hi Carrie,

    Two questions, if I may:
    1) Is there any particular cultural (or multiple cultures’) mythos you look to for inspiration when working out how certain paranormal types would fit into the Kittyverse?
    2) Kitty’s House of Horrors was (in my mind, at least) noticably darker than the prior volumes. Will the series be continuing in this vein?

    As to the music questions:
My favorite song right now… Hmm, hard to say, really. I’ve currently got Meat Loaf’s “Los Angeloser” stuck in my head, but I think I’ll go with Flogging Molly’s “Drunken Lullabies” at the moment.

Favorite Kitty playlist song: …I’ve been listening to “Sort of Haunted House” a fair bit lately, so possibly that one at the moment (Bad Moon Rising’s a long time favorite though). I do have to note I love the way “Black Is The Color” flows into “Another Day” in House of Horrors’ list, however.

And I did RSVP for this event yesterday.

    • 1. I take two angles — commentary on the “modern” Hollywood mythos of vampires and werewolves. Mine pretty much follow Hollywood rules. But I’m always on the lookout for other mythologies and creatures from other cultures — djinn, skinwalkers, etc. In those cases I like to get to their roots if I can.

      2. Probably not. I had a particular story I wanted to tell for that book, that happened to be quite dark. I try to shake things up quite a bit from book to book, so I’m never really doing the same thing twice.

  51. Joani S says:

Hi Carrie! So glad you are here so I can gush and say how much I love this series!! I don’t necessarily have a favorite song right now, I have a pretty eclectic taste in music. My favorite bands are the specials, buzzcocks, the clash, deep forest, loreena mckennitt, and disco. A little of everything. I was checking out your website, love those comics, barry manilow makes me shudder too. My question for you is do you like to read comics? Keep up with a particular set? If so, what are they? Thanks so much for being here, and preordered for the kindle. Can’t wait!!

    • I do like comics, though I don’t keep up with anything in particular. I usually wait for other people to recommend things to me. I just tried out some of “Fables.” Kurt Busiek’s and Alex Ross’s “Marvels” is one of my all time favorites, and “Astro City” is on my list to pick up soon. I loved the Robinson/Harris run of “Starman.” I’ve also read G.I. Joe off and on over the years.

  52. Jonn R says:

I really just wanted to thanks you for such wonderful reading and characters. I think my favorite song(s) from the books is/are Bad Moon rising, and The Ghost Busters music (mentioned in House of Horrors – although I am not sure it was actually on the play list)I had two or three questions, if you’ll let me:

    (1) I was wondering how you come up with such ingenious ways of having Kitty find herself in these situations?

    (2) I also have to ask if you are going to do any “spin offs” from your Kitty series with one or more of the characters? As you have said, they see(some time) seem to take on a life of their own.

    (3) When do we get to find out what exactly was going on with Cormic while in prison that he was asking about some one dying – was he being haunted, him self?

Thank you so much (again) for your great writing and stories. I cannot wait to see whoere elseyou take these and how you bring up todays issues.

    • 1. I usually have a core scene or story I want to tell in each book. Then I have to think about a logical way for such a scene or story to happen, and play out events from there.

      2. I don’t know yet. I still have a few Kitty books to write and I won’t spin anything off until I’m finished with this series.

      3. I’m working on that story right now, and it’ll be part of the Kitty short story collection that should be out sometime next year.

I’ve not yet read any of the Kitty series, but it’s been on my list for a while. I did pick up a copy of Voices of Dragons recently and can’t wait to get started!

My favorite song right now. Hmmmmm, That’s a tough one because I LOVE many types of music! I’d have to say “What do You want from Me” by Adam Lambert. Not only is he a hottie, he had a major set of lungs! And, to be honest, it’s not so much the actual wording, but the sound and his vocal talent and keeps me signin’ along! Lol, am I a nerd?

    • That’s a really big question — I’ve written about it in depth on my blog. Basically, I worked for a really long time. Kitty and The Midnight Hour was the first book I sold, but it was the fourth book I tried to sell. I wrote dozens of short stories before selling any of those. I just kept at it for a really long time.

Biggest advice — always be working on the next thing. Write the next novel while trying to sell the first.

Yay! I LOVE Kitty. I have every book so far, and loved all of them. Kitty’s House of Horror’s is my favorite as of right now. I was wondering What was your favorite scene or character from that book? OR Where did you get the idea of KHOH? I LOVED it, either way! Great job:)

    I answered the poll!

    • House of Horrors is my take on the stereotypical slasher flick. I reversed the roles — the supernatural creatures were the ones being hunted. And I wanted to make it actually scary instead of just gory.

One of my favorite scenes in it is when Anastasia catches one of the hunters and has her way with him. It’s about the creepiest thing I’ve ever written.

  62. Gabrielle J. says:

I RSVPed yesterday I think, I unfortunately haven’t read any of this series yet so I don’t know much about it.

My question was, is Kitty the only character that you use songs for or there other songs that just pop out that are perfect for your other characters?

I was also curious, How did you come up with the name Kitty for a werewolf? It’s pretty interesting.

  63. Monica R says:

    Hey Carrie,

Thanks so much for doing this! It’s awesome when authors take time out of their busy schedule to answer fans questions :) Just wanted to let you know that I’m a huge fan of Kitty’s. I wish her radio show was real so that I could be a loyal listener! I’m sure everyone out there feels the same.

  64. Patty says:

    Carrie,

Discovered the Kitty books some time back and have been enjoying the plot arc. Somehow it seems to be an anthem to what even those that think they are weak can do when they have to. Sort of the seeds of strength that can be found in the fires of adversity. I have just started Voices of Dragons and will be picking up Kitty goes to War. Thank you for sharing your worlds with your readers.

As for favorite music I am constantly rediscovering music that makes life better. Meatloaf’s “I’ll do anything, but that” was one from today that struck a cord and about anything by Santana. Music is so alive!

The new book sounds great — and the topic seems very appropriate for the Kitty’verse. I know it’s an issue you’ll take seriously and handle well.

It’s embarrassing to acknowledge that my favorite Kitty playlist song is “Bad Moon Rising” — I hate to go with the theme, but it’s classic, and I always end up humming it when I pick up a Kitty book. :)

Question: did you create a playlist for non-Kitty books (Voices of Dragons or Discord’s Apple)? Or is it the DJ focus that makes Kitty playlists important?

    • Alana Abbott says:

Whoops! Can’t edit previous comments. It should say +25 for the poll and +25 for Nicole. The link in the post after Nicole seems to take you to the Linda RSVP, just FYI!

    • The DJ thing definitely plays a part with the Kitty playlists.

The other books I write tend to have one or two theme songs rather than a whole playlist. For Discord’s Apple it was the American Angels album by Anonymous 4, and for Voices the songs were “The Old Ones” by Loreena McKinnet and “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin.

    1. My favorite song right now is Only Love by Heather Nova but my favorite songs forever are Free Fallin by Tom Petty and Hotel California by Eagles.
    2. My favorite song from a Kitty playlist is Abracadabra by Steve Miller Band & You Don’t Know How it Feels by Tom Petty.

    • Hm, I’m thinking Kitty’s favorite movie would be something like “Love, Actually.”

I’m reading The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan right now. Kitty’s probably reading something nonfiction and relevant. The Omnivore’s Dilemma? hahaha…

    • I listen to music a bunch — in the car, at home when I’m working, etc. I’ve got a decent collection already, I use Pandora, take recommendations from friends. I just always keep my ears open for something that might work.

One song I have been listening to a lot lately is Time by Ozzy Osbourne.

First and formost I love your series. Kitty is a wonderful character and I have enjoyed every one of your books so far and I am sure I will for all of the ones left to be wriitten. I like oldies but goodies music. Anything from the Rolling Stones, to the Stone Ponies and tell my children I saw the Eagles when they had their own teeth not dentures! So my favorite Kitty song would be Bad Moon Rising.
I RSVPed for this event, Robertson’s, Peller’s Kindle contest, chatted, voted, entered Kenyon contest, commented on this weeks coloum, commented on Harris event, checked out the 45 free books, and I think that is all of them. Thankyou, Lisa D.

    Hey Carrie,
I hope I didn’t miss out on the chat party. My eyes aren’t the greatest because of a dilated eye exam earlier today. Congrats on your latest release. I have no questions. Just wanted to say hi. Wishing you many sells and best wishes your books are on my TBR mountain.

    Hi Carrie,
I love your books… I’ve read all of them just waiting for the next. I love all the songs you have listed in your books. I was in the hospital last week and my daughter went and downloaded the songs from the first 4 books for me to listen to. It helped a lot. So thank you for that. I just love music and I like mostly anything. To ask you something: can you tell us something that we would not believe you do or like?
    Thanks so much,

    • Well, I have a fondess for old-school musicals. West Side Story is a favorite, Anything Goes, Guys and Dolls, South Pacific, etc. I did a bunch of acting in high school and was in several high school/community theater productions of things like Annie Get Your Gun, etc.

        Thank you..

Carrie, I love your books and can’t wait to read this one! I was really excited this morning when I woke up and your book was on my Kindle already. I also pre-ordered Discord’s Apple and am looking forward to it too. Do you have the idea for your next Kitty book already? Is the whole story outlined in your mind or does it form as you write it?

    • I’m usually thinking up the ideas for two books ahead. I’ve already written #9 and I’m about to start writing #10 — I have a pretty good idea what it’s about and need to start outlining, and I’m thinking about what I can do for the one after that.

  88. MinnChica says:

I have heard such great things about this book. I can’t wait to get started on it!! :D

My favorite song right now happens to be Grapevine Fields by Death Cab for Cutie. I’m addicted, and that song has always stuck with me from the moment I heard it! Which is odd for me, because my normal musical choices are more hard, such as Lincoln Park, Breaking Benjamin, Fall Out Boy, etc.

  89. Cheryl Koch says:

I don’t have one particular song that is my favorite right now. I like listening to all the remakes sung by the cast of the television series Glee.

    Really like the books.
