Burnt Offerings by Laurell K. Hamilton

“Some people seek death through desperation. Some people fall into it out of stupidity.”

Anita has chosen her beau. Though being metaphysically tied to both Richard and Jean Claude can be just as hazardous. But now is not the time or place. She finds responsibilities she wasn’t expecting waiting for her. And company that no sane person would invite coming to visit. But no one has ever accused Anita of being sane.

Jean Claude’s power base has always been under scrutiny. Of indeterminate age and power, no one is sure of his true strength. Richard has fought for his pack, and won it, but can he hold it? Is he willing to be as ruthless keeping his Alpha state as he was getting it?

Anita knew that when she chose Jean Claude she hurt Richard. And she knows that the Council for the vampires is coming. But what she doesn’t know is how to deal with it all at the same time. But now is not the time to work it all out in her head. The Council is here, there is an arsonist torching the city, weres that need her help, and a jealous Alpha that all need her attention. What is a girl to do? Take it one at a time, and hope everyone comes out alive.

Burnt Offerings is the seventh book in the Anita Blake series, and just as enthralling as the first. Anita’s beliefs are constantly put to the test, and her ability to move forward regardless of the situation is a delight to read about. Throughout each story Anita develops a little more. With her beliefs of right and wrong, good and evil, and feelings of responsibility constantly in a battle with the world around her, she doesn’t remain stagnant, but evolves to match each situation. That is one of the joys of reading this series, never knowing what is going to happen next. I enjoy Ms. Hamilton’s ability to retain the reader’s interest, with the action and steam filled pages. The spiciness of the scenes just accentuates the fight scenes, in this reader’s eye. They complement each other, for there is no life without death and the reverse can also be said as well. As I think Ms. Hamilton has shown throughout this entire series. This is a series that I enjoy and will reread.
