Echo Angela Boady suffered from an extremely paralyzing fear of dogs. She never knew why she would panic at the mere thought of a dog, but the phobia was crippling her career as a news reporter. The latest incident caused her to faint in the news room. Echo decided it was time to go home and face her fears. The ferry ride calmed her as she made her way home to Fulford Harbor in Canada. Seeing her aunt, by name only, waiting for her centered her quickly – until she noticed her flirting with a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. Her family did not associate with any member of the law. Imagine her surprise, hours later, while visiting with Aunt Georgia when the Mountie pulls into the driveway.

Constable Gabe Keller, a tenant of Aunt Georgia, is new to the island. Upon entering the kitchen, his heart lurched once he laid eyes on Echo. He was very intrigued by Echo’s coolness towards him, until he learned who her “family” members were on the island. Her family’s business would certainly cause concern for Echo to show any interest in Gabe.

Gabe wanted to earn her trust quickly. He decided to inform her of a planned raid on her “family’s” compound. Echo, relieved that she could help prevent any harm to her family, was grateful to Gabe’s friendly warning, yet she was hesitant on what might be expected as a return favor. Gabe was quick to answer. He had been working on the side trying to uncover the mystery of Warwick Place and had been plagued by nightmares all tying into the old manor. He felt like he was losing control every time he went into the house. The nightmares were getting worse, he was losing pieces of time, and now hearing voices. Of course, he wasn’t going to tell Echo that part but he did want her reported skills to help uncover the mystery.

Echo and Gabe found themselves being pulled into and becoming part of the nightmare of Warwick Place, the evil permeated throughout the walls drawing them deeper into the nightmare.

Sally Fogel’s novel Remnants of Fear is a well constructed page turner. Fogel’s development of plot and characters creatively intertwine well. The novel offers a variety of pleasure, fear, and evil all in one scary package. I had a hard time putting it down. I look forward to future novels from Fogel.
