The Black Act by Louise Bohmer
The world is called Dala and it is alive and aware. It creates and nurtures life, and the Fae are made of Dala’s very body. The Dalthwein are Dala’s human children and they live in harmony, for the most part, with the Fae. In an effort to keep the harmony, the women of the Dalthwein who carried magic in their blood formed into the Guild of the Wise Women and were taught by the Fae.
But peace and harmony are gifts hard won and there are always those that strive for power and who carry anger and hatred in their souls. The decision to create the Guild came from an act of hatred, and a curse was laid on one family bloodline. The curse carried through the generations, bringing destruction and death with it. This is the story of a world cursed and a world redeemed.
The Black Act is a stark and powerful tale. Louise Bohmer has created a world unlike any I’ve ever read, and her Fae are absolutely unique – both in their vintage and philosophy. The construction of the story is seamless, weaving back and forth through the generations. It’s done in a manner that is more storytelling than written, and one can imagine sitting around a campfire listening to the horror that oozes out of the Black Act. The contrasts between beauty and bleakness are outstanding. It is neither a comfortable read nor a pleasant one, but it is gripping, fascinating entry into the unimaginable.
